Rating: Summary: This book gave me a headache of disgust. Review: I read this book in hopes of understanding what it is about Terry McMillan that people love so much, and yet somehow I walked away feeling more muddled that before. Terry McMillan is not clever in her writing, her plot or her characters. I hated this book and I will never pick up one of her novels again.
Rating: Summary: A fun summer book Review: This book was a fun read... although parts of it were somewhat predictable and most of it seemed a bit implausible, I couldn't put it down. It was a nice little escape for poolside reading and was surprisingly thought provoking with respect to our societal views of women, particularly older women, and relationships.
Rating: Summary: I was a bit disappointed but it's still entertaining. Review: I read "Waiting to Exhale" so I was expecting a bit more from this book. I thought anyone could have written this who went on one of "those" wild trips to Jamaica. I thought Quincy had the most character. Stella & Winston didn't go any deeper than the sheets so I thought the ending was a bit much for how shallow their relationship was throughout the rest of the book. The over-use of "I say/said" "he says/said" reminds me of Raymond Carver's style. But I think she could have done without using "like" so much, it was about to work my nerve! I also have mixed feelings about needing a man to get your groove on --with all that money/education/talent she had it's sad that life didn't really begin till she got "some". I'd have rather seen that positive attitude come from within FIRST then she just happened to meet Winston... That being said, I really appreciated the way Vanessa didn't trip off the age difference and how she was happy about Stella's man --more women should have this attitude! After all, men have been doing this for years, it's our turn now!
Rating: Summary: This book showed how one woman can reclaim her life. Review: How Stella got her Groove back is one of the many books that I have enjoyed over the summer. Many people seem to focus on the obvious, older woman, younger man, however this book is much deeper than that. Reclaiming your life is what I think Terry was trying to bring out, in my opinion she did an excellent job!!!!!
Rating: Summary: A feel "good" book Review: I really liked this book. The fantasy relationship that turns into a real thing for her was great. I highly recommend this book to all women (my age) 40+. Great reading.
Rating: Summary: The book was excellant! Review: Terri McMillan did an excellant job writing this book. You could put yourself in her place and really understand her thoughts and problems associated being with a younger man. It also shows the power of Love. If you really love someone you can remove the obstacles that keeps you apart.
Rating: Summary: WHAT A WASTE !!! Review: I found this book to be sooo boring. I bought it when it first came out in paperback and tried to read it. It was boring then. When the movie came out, and I saw the commericails (especially Whoopi), I tried again. What a waste of my time. The run-on sentences make the book very hard going, but the worst part was the people. I really did not care whether Stella ever got her groove back or not. She was shallow, and annoying. The other characters were flat, as was Stella. I love everything else Terry McMillan wrote, but this was terrible. I'm not even going to see the movie until it comes out on cable.
Rating: Summary: There's a little Stella in all of us. Review: The book was plain beautiful. Stella is a beautiful and intelligent sista, not only outside but inside also. She's doing what many others are doing today in their everyday lives, but, of course, with much more style and class. Great job Terry. We're eagerly awaiting your next masterpiece.
Rating: Summary: A book that a woman can relate to and lose herself in. Review: The style of writing (no punctuation), made the story more real and it helped me get into her head more. I have not come across this style of writing before. There are so many important lines made in this story that I had to highlight them: *Pg 136, last parag...a definition of life? *Pg 149, para/"a fabulous question..." - definition of love *Pg 317 "..there is no right or wrong.." *Pg 327/last parag. *Pg 328/first para. finding happiness This feels like a literature book - are these lines true, are they from real life philisophies/observations/personal opinions? *is it a new relationship between mother and son when Stella gets her groove back *can a relationship really work between two people of different cultures? * is it real that we can find the 'right' person half way around the world? As a Caribbean woman (Trinidad) I was able to relate to this story. This is a story to read and think about after and discuss with your girlfriends but to not lose sight of the humour of men and life and relationships and self.
Rating: Summary: It's all about getting your groove on Mon! Review: Insightful, inspiring, hot, romantic and exciting! Can't wait 'til Friday to check the movie out! YOU GO STELLA!!
