Summary: The Mitford books are the best!
Review: I sort of stumbled upon the Mitford books. Good thing I did. I have recommended the books to everyone I know. My aunt even recommended that I read them before I could tell her about Father Tim and Cynthia! Thanks for the great writing, Ms. Karon. Thanks for writing about Christianity with real substance, humor and passion. Look forward to the next books!

Summary: Ms. Karon and the Mitford series are awesome!
Review: I am a voracious reader of novels, with lots of favorite authors. Ms. Karon and the Mitford series have jumped to the top of my list. The reader 'lives' in Mitford and the characters become his own friends. Now that I have finished Out to Canaan, I want to know what continues to happen in the lives of these new friends.

Summary: ONE OF THE MOST HEART-FELT BOOKS OF THIS CENTURY
Review: I read Ms. Karon's first three books when I was at a very low period in my life. When I began OUT TO CANAAN, life was good again. OUT TO CANAAN continues to confirm my belief that good, believable novels can be written that show life as it really is and what it should be. The book is certainly not syrupy, ignoring the harsh realities that we all face. I cannot wait until the next one comes out, and the next and the next

Summary: This is such a warm, refreshing view of walking with God.
Review: I truly enjoyed visiting Mitford and getting to know all the wonderful characters. It is such an encourgement to me to see someone's natural walk with the Lord as seen in every day life. I want to walk with God on the intimate level like Father Tim does. I cannot remember reading anything else as uplifting. It is pretty bad when you get attached to a dog by knowing him in a book. Thank you Jan Karon and please let us visit Mitford again

Summary: Ever imagine moving to the perfect small town? It's here!!
Review: I had such high expectations for this book I was ready for disappointment, but Jan Karon delivers another perfect Mitford tale! These books are so warm, funny and life-affirming, you'll give up sleeping and eating and just read instead. You won't find any perfect people in Mitford, or (thankfully!) any holier-than-thou attitudes. You WILL find believable characters doing believable things, especially Father Tim, who struggles each day to do right by God and his parishioners. These books are a too-rare treat

Summary: Such a good series, I bought them for our local library.
Review: The four books of the Mitford Years have been thoroughly perused and enjoyed by both members of this family. In fact, we loved them so much that we purchased them for our local library so that they may be enjoyed by many more people

Summary: When does the next one come out?
Review: The Mitford Years was originally plaaned as a trilogy and then expanded to a 5 book series. I would suggest that 7 is also a good number, or how about 77? What do you say, Jan? I loved this book dearly from beginning to end. I cannot think of words to properly express the joy, laughter and tears that this book brought. I was also thrilled to see it on the New York Times Bestseller list. Now many are discovering what some of us have known for a long time: that Jan Karon is truly one of the finest novelists of our time

Summary: How wonderful to escape to Mitford again!
Review: "Canaan" was a wonderful treat after waiting patiently (?) for its release. Karon is so talented in making her readers really care about the characters. I love the way Dooley is growing up so nicely!! I did not think that anyone would be able to take Miss Sadie's place in my heart, but Dooley is on his way! I devoured this book in no time at all! It was a pleasure to read and I look forward to my next visit to Mitford

Summary: Do yourself a favor and read this whole series!
Review: I loved this book! I do miss Miss Sadie, though....Ms Karon truly makes me feel as if I know the people of Mitford. I really care about what happens to them. All the Bible quotations make me feel at home (my father was a minister)and I want to try some orange marmalade cake. Wonder how the newlyweds will like living in Miss Sadie's mansion? I can't wait for the next book

Summary: This book is an anomaly--and yet, completely enthralling!
Review:

This is the first book I've read by Jan Karon, and I must admit that I was enthralled. It is the fourth in a series, "The Mitford Years." I probably should have read the previous three books first, usually a good plan with a series like the long Aubrey/Maturin series by Patrick O'Brian. But this book stands alone very well. Oddly, I'm now starting the sixth book in the series, "A Common Life: The Wedding Story," in which the events described obviously precede the events in "Out of Canaan." I'm frankly perplexed that Karon would write them apparently out of order.

"Out of Canaan" is the story of the rector of an Episcopal church, his wife and friends in the very small southern community of Mitsford. In fact, nearly the entire population of 200 souls seems to be involved in the story in some way. Everyone knows everyone else.

This is really a good story. The protagonist and most of the other characters are devoted Christians, and there are many Christian references: Bible quotations, hymn lyrics, and other references. The story will probably not be appreciated by atheists, but may be of interest to folks of other religious faiths who can identify with the human feelings portrayed, and ignore dogma conflicts.

Although there is some conflict in the plot--otherwise, there would be no story--one cannot characterize it as suspenseful. For those impatient people who demand suspense and a brisk pace toward the resulution of the conflict, this book might be characterized as "boring." For me, it was a delightful experience. If you like to read, and appreciate nice turns of phrase and realistic characters--the kind of people you know and meet every day--you'll probably enjoy this book. Personally, I loved it.
