Rating: Summary: Fried Green Tomatos at the Whistle Stop Cafe Review: What a funny, original warm hearted book! The characters are great and you will grow to love them. The only thing that I didn't like about this book was the fate of Ruth's husband, I thought that was kind of sick. Other than that it is a nice light engaging read. I would especially recommend it if you are in a bad mood, its a great book for lifting up your spirits.
Rating: Summary: In a word : WONDERFUL! Review: "Fried Green..." was a very wonderful book! Fannie Flagg has the knack for creating characters that are not only entertaining, but different! I loved this book from the start, especially Idgie for her determination.Evelyn and Mrs. Threadgoode were wonderful, noshing on junk food for lack of better things to do. All of Fannie Flaggs books are great! I can hardly wait for a new one to come out!
Rating: Summary: I love this historical fiction book! Review: Hello! My name is Sunny, and i am 13 years old. my mother gave me this book(fried green) for me to read for my book report, but i did not want to read it, b/c it was so long. so i read it in my free time. i loved this book from cover-to-cover! it tells a great story about 2 women in the 80's- one is a fat woman, eagar to lose weight, and is also going through a bad case of menapause, Evelyn, and the other is an old lady, Mrs. Threadgoode who has lived through the Great Depression, and everytime her friend comes in the lounge of her nursing home she talks about her days during the Depression, and her friends during that time. she tells about the hard days, when the KKK ruled over the South, and when a full meal cost 35 cents. they were hard days, but she tells how she and her friends, Idgie and Ruth lived through them, making it an exciting and suspensful tale, that really makes you want to have lived through that time, in Whistle Stop Alabama. If you want more information, read the book, cuz it is 10x better than the reviews make it sound! Oh, and after or before the book, watch the movie. you can rent it at a video store, but check your t.v. guide, because it was on a couple of days ago. luv ya!, >>~~**sUnNy**~~<<
Rating: Summary: Endearing and Thoughtful- A true Classic Review: This great American classic deals with many of the important issues in Southern Alabama from the 1920s to 1980s. Idgie is a true hero in this novel, which explores her repect for the African American population, her family, and her true love for another woman. A novel that makes you cry and laugh, while contemplating your own life as well. I recommend it for anyone, male and female, that has ever felt a little different or alone.
Rating: Summary: Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe Review: One of my favorite novels of all time. I have read it several times. You'll just fall in love with the characters and Whistle Stop, Alabama. I highly recommend this novel to anyone who appreciates a warm and friendly novel set in the south.
Rating: Summary: A GEM Review: I love Fannie Flagg's quiet sense of humor and the way she really brings her characters to life. They are real people, not cardboard cut-outs. It's wonderful to read a book that explores the themes of friendship and love and doesn't depend on gratuitous violence to drive the plot. Sad and funny at the same time, this is a book that really touches the heart and stays there.
Rating: Summary: REFRESHING! Review: At times it felt as if I was reading from a journal, what with all the recipes and characters who are so alive you'd like to feel them for a pulse. This story, which is actually a number of tales woven into one, had me laughing and crying simultaniously. It touched on such diverse issues, even ageism, with such humor, such heart. And to prove how convincing this book was, I soon found myself battering sliced hard green tomatoes and tossing them in a thickly greased pan. They were delicious.
Rating: Summary: Great for the bathroom, not a strong literary experience Review: Entertaining. Differs from the movie. More story lines and characters, like most books later made into movies. There is less emphasis on the mystery of the murder than the movie portrayed and more on the weaving of relationships through the generations. Idgie is more lesbian (nothing graphic) and more of a strong hero. The writing is good but not really of a the class of Southern writing of others of this generation. Enjoyable.
Rating: Summary: amazing style Review: It's definately something different style-wise (which is good), and wonderful when you're looking for a book with developed and loveable characters.
Rating: Summary: This book sounds so true! Review: My daughter, 12, reads this book at least three times a year, she loves it so much! This book is so life like and can really take you back to the times of the Great Depression. It flashes back from a women in the 80's, going through her mid-life crisis to her old friend's days back in the Great Depression. The old women lives in a nursing home, and evey time the middle-aged women comes in, she tells a continues her life story. This is a great book, and if my 12 year old daughter can read an adult book, you know it has to be good!
