Summary: Southern Comfort!
Review: Although I saw the movie based on this book several times, its only now 15 years after the book was published that I finally decided to read it. And now that I have gulped down the pages, I'm wondering what took me so long to read this book and envelop myself with this delightful book filled wth Southern charm. And while its also safe to say that many readers and movie viewers are now familair with the storis about Idgie, Ruth, Ninnny and Evelyn, rarely does a book today offer such wonderful and endearing characters as does this book. Add to that a plot which has you racing to the last page and sighing when you close the book.

While describing a friendship between two women some 60 years before and a present day relationship between a nursing home resident and her loyal visitor, the reader is set off on a roller coaster ride of emotions. Dealing with subjects as far reaching as women's liberation, homosexual relationships, rights of minority groups and growing old, Fannie Flagg never fails to enitce her readers and allow then to view a slice of American life now sadly gone.

It may have taken me all of this time to finally read a book by Fannie Flagg, but if her other titles are nearly as good as this one, I surely will be in reader's heaven. I recently purchased Welcome to the World, Baby Girl which I'm saving for the proverbial rainy day. I have a feeling it may be coming soon.

Summary: INCREDIBLE
Review: This book deserves all five stars; it affects you in so many wonderful ways. Making your tears run through some very saddening parts, or making you belly ache from the sense of humor of the book. It shows you how with strength and spirit anyone can prevail over all sorts of evil elements. How when what you are doing is not the accepted and the correct thing to do at the time, if you stick with your guts anything can happen! This book shows how not only love is a part of relationship but also the friendship part. The characters come alive and one cannot put down this book. I was very problematical at first, I never thought the book,"Fried Green Tomatoes At The Whistle Stop Café" would be good by any means. However my first assumption was shot down once I started this novel. I recommend this for any one especially if you think goals and aspirations are impossible they are not. Your spirits will rise and you will feel much better after reading this novel. Also if you are the kind of reader who just reads books just to read and not enjoy. You will find not only do you learn something about the 1920's but that you will enjoy reading about it too!

Summary: Should be read at least twice.
Review: It's too hard to follow the first time, even IF you've seen the movie, IMHO. And this makes it too hard to appreciate.

That's why I only give this four stars. I like my books to be a little more organized than this. But in every other way, the book is wonderful. I love the characters, I love the way it touches on a number of contemporary issues without preaching, and the individual sections are well written.

Summary: My Favorite
Review: This book is my all-time favorite. Flagg's portrayal of the south rings true. Her touching friendships span time, and show us what true friendship means today.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Like coming home.
Review: Fannie Flagg is one of the best writers about the south and "Fried Green Tomatoes" is her best book. Everytime I read this book it is like coming home to the little cafe downtown and to the sound of the old trains that used to pass in the night. The characters are like old friends and the strength of spirit an inspiration. I would recomend this book to any woman who needs a good laugh and a good cry because this book will give you both.

Summary: I dare you not to giggle throughout this book!
Review: Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe will make you cry, laugh, and realize, in the end, the strength of the human spirit can prevail over all sorts of evil elements

Fannie Flagg, in her characteristic voice, spins a yarn that will have you laughing until it hurts, while at the same time, exposing the horrors of racism and sexism in the south and the rest of the country. She creates the most lovable characters in Onzell, Sipsey, Idgie, Ruth, Momma, Poppa, Big George, Stump, Ninny, and Evelyn Couch. Join Evelyn in her rebirth in the "All-Black" Baptist Church she visits one Sunday, laugh as Vesta Adcock runs over her gardener head as he's napping, (he lives, just a few tires marks!) laugh as Dot Weem reports that her husband burnt down the garage, and forgot to back the car out in order to save his brand new saw! Flagg's voice is truly southern, rich, ripe with humor, pride and seriousness. This book will make you hungry and could easily lead to your gaining weight!

Told in a series of short flashbacks, the plot is not easily defined, but is perfect for the book! Read this sweet, lovable, good, book; you'll feel better afterward!

Summary: Folksy, funny characters make you love this novel!
Review: The Whistle Stop Cafe is a place that any reader would want to visit. I read this book in hard back when it first came out and re-read it again as a paperback recently. I laughed and cried all over again. The story is as fresh today as it ever was -- not too many novels can make that claim.

Summary: An Enchanting Tale of The Old South
Review: This novel is a fine historical view of The South. Fannie Flagg introduces two women in the Mid 1980's. One is an overweight housewife named Evelyn Couch. The other is an elderly woman in Rose Terrace Retirement Home named Mrs. Cleo Threadgoode. Mrs. Threadgoode enthralls Evelyn with the tales of life in the small railroad community of Whistle Stop,Alabama. In so doing, we are introduced to colorful characters like Idgie,Ruth,Sipsey, and Big George. We hear about their lives, and adventures through several ways. Flagg either tells their tales from a firsthand point of view, or uses the local "Newspaper" called THE WEEMS WEEKLY, published by Busybody postal worker Dot Weems. Either way, the tales are wonderful, and well-written. I suggest this book for anyone who wants to be swept away into a great work of Southern Literature.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: More than I expected
Review: I went into this book without expecting much. However, Flagg captivated me. This book is about more things than I could mention here. Racism, aging, lesbianism, charity, southern poverty, etc. Flagg's subtle yet open treatment of Idgie and Ruth's relationship is beautiful. The easy flow of her writing will make you believe the improbable without a second thought. This book is accessible enough to be enjoyed by almost anyone. For those seeking depth, don't worry, it's there. This book will be around for a long time.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Love it!
Review: This is Fannie Flagg's best novel--and the others are very good too!
