Rating: Summary: One of the Best Review: This is an outstanding book. Ms. Lippi has an extraoridnary ability to make you feel that you know these women. Her descriptions are so touching and evocative. I couldn't put down... even the second and third times I read it. I've encouraged everyone I know to read this excellent book and every single person loved it! GIVE IT A TRY! You won't be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: An enchanting tale with the feel of Joy Luck Club. Review: This lovely novel tells the story of the women in a small village in Austria at the turn of the century. It is very compelling and quite enchanting. You don't find lovely books like this very often.
Rating: Summary: Heavy-handed Review: This reads less like a novel than sociology in the form of a novel, written to impress the reader with the author's knowledge of the Austrian alpine's social history.
Rating: Summary: A luminous book Review: What a beautiful book! Each chapter, which could stand alone as a short story, evokes feelings, scents, views, as it tells the story of one woman and the people in her life. The characters stay with me, long after I have finished the book. I will read this one again and again. Lippi has a wonderful way of capturing an entire range of feelings in a very small action -- a wave of the hand, a broken wedding ring, answering a postcard. Amazing, and lovely. My only criticism, and I hope they fix this in the next printing, is that the dates in the family trees printed in the back don't always match the story.I will definitely give this book as a gift this year at Christmas, especially to sisters, mother, and women friends.
Rating: Summary: This book is an unsung masterpiece! Review: Why hasn't this book been lauded more loudly? I stumbled on it and had never heard of it. These wonderful, interrelated stories capture the entire 20th century in one Austrian mountain village. Each chapter tells the story of one of the peasant women, and sometimes the real "end of the story" only comes in a future chapter. Touching and true, these stories show how little changes in the basis of a woman's life: love, children and work. Each woman's emotional life is laid bare in a short chapter. The course of the century leaves its mark as the wars wreak their misery even on this little isolated village, and of course the women are left to mourn. You will love this book and will want to pass it on so you can talk about it with your friends!
