Rating: Summary: A soothing read at the end of a hectic day. Review: I read the first book in the series, and found myself oddly drawn into the mundane activities in Mitford. This is not my usual type of book at all, and yet, I found myself looking forward to the end of the day when I reserved a little time to read it. It is soothing, somehow. Not to say that the characters don't have problems and sorrows. They are quite human. I really loved the monologue by Fancy Skinner as she cuts Father Tim's hair. I had hoped to get the 2nd book in the series from the library, but the librarian had taken it home to read herself. I jumped right into book three! Will go back and read book two, gladly. It is easy to become addicted to these characters.
Rating: Summary: Nice, friendly visit Review: These books are like a nice visit with a friendly, hometown pastor. I have thoroughly enjoyed them and plan to own them all!
Rating: Summary: EXCELLENT!!!!!!!!!! Review: The Mitford books are the best books I've ever read and I can't wait for more. It has been such a pleasure. They are wonderful, peaceful books and should be mandatory reading!!!! Keep writing Jan!!
Rating: Summary: Another visit to Mitford!! Review: The third in the series, this one will have you rolling on the floor with laughter, and reaching for a Kleenix with tears. And running to buy the fourth one to find out what happens next!!
Rating: Summary: Relaxing escape! Review: This book provides a relaxing escape from the real world. It does not burden you with sex, deep problems, or a hammering religious message. All the Mitford years books are broken into parts that make it easy to pick them up and put them down. Karon is an expert at character development. You come to deeply care about each character. Although Christianity is a part of each book, the message you get is that it's a subtle part of everyday life.
Rating: Summary: Karon's characters give insight into small town life . Review: The endearing characters in Jan Karon's second book in the Mitford series, 'A Light in the Window', have given me insight into my own small town parish. Often as I read I find myself recasting the script with the folks I know. Jan Karon may not win a Pulitzer prize in literature for these books, but she has won a warm place in the hearts of many men and women who enjoy a gentle read before retiring. Any book which makes a person smile or laugh out loud performs a fine service. After so many murder mysteries, war novels, and expose books, this genre is a pleasant relief.
Rating: Summary: Nostalgia for the soul and spirit yet so relevelant to 1997 Review: All of the books in this series, even the newest one, Out of Cannan, take me back to a time and a place that maybe only exsists in the human spirit - and memories. I look forward to new titles in this series as we follow the lives of those that appear to "be all together" and those that it seems nothing can happen "good" for. I love the human touch and spirit that in a world that we know is flawed, here is rural town Americana, that all of us visit from time to time Every age from 12-80 can read, reminiscent and enjoy this wonderful series. You will find as you visit with the varied personalities of this parish those that are in your "parish" wherever you are.
Great gift books for pre-teens to teens for Christmas!
Rating: Summary: The best of the Mitford series. It's love all over again. Review: I fell in love with Father Tim, Cynthia, Dooley and Barnabas in the first book, At Home In Mitford, then continued that love affair through A Light in the Window. I listened to these on audio, which is perfectly read by John McDonough. When These High Green Hills wasn't available in audio at my local library, I read my first book in years...absolutely delightful, even to imagining McDonough's rich narration. Now I have the audio and am reliving the whole experience, because this is the best of the three. Thank you Jan Karon for your wonderful characters...I'm looking forward to the warmth and humor to continue when Out of Canaan finally appears
Rating: Summary: Just as good as the first two in the series. Excellent! Review: This series[Jan Karon, Mitford] is one of the best I have ever read. If the whole world turned off the TV, and read these books, it would become a place like Mitford! These High Green Hills is just as good as the first two in the series. Our pastor gets a little older, a little wiser about himself and his parish but does it with a smile the whole way. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could see life as such an adventure the way Father Tim does? I strongly recommend this book for anyone who is tired of reading legal murder mysteries. This is light hearted reading at its best
Rating: Summary: Mitford and Mayberry Review: Jan Karon is a gifted author who writes of simpler times and ordinary folks. I was hooked at once after reading the first book in the series. Each book keeps getting better as Father Tim and Cynthia and their friends live their busy productive lives in a small mountain community.People who enjoyed Andy Griffith and the Mayberry TV shows will feel the same warmth and joy in Mitford stories. Although there is a strong Christian message throughout, these books are for people of all faiths. The characters are outstanding, so real they could be people you know (or wish you knew). You will marvel at the surprising twists and turns as the stories evolve. Read the first book and continue with the series for sheer pleasure. Share this book and the others in the series with friends and neighbors. They are so special, so satisfying, and contain a powerful message of hope. All ages will benefit and be uplifted.
