Rating: Summary: Reading more about Mitford because my book club wants me to! Review: "High, Green Hills" is the second "Mitford" book I've read. While I find them entertaining and relaxing, I think my time would be better spent reading other things. I may read a third the next time I need to rest or am in the hospital. But, if my Book Club insists - that is what I will do.
Rating: Summary: Another winner by Jan Karon Review: I did not expect to go beyond the first Mitford book. The first book I found to be just slightly "sugary". However, I was hooked and had to go on to the second to find out what happened to each of the characters. I enjoyed the second book very much and then was forced to read the third book as I am now totally addicted. Tonight I finished the third book and tomorrow I start the fourth. I am in love with these people and this town. Totally unrealistic but who cares? I would love to live there.
Rating: Summary: Love love love these books Review: I can't wait to dive into the next on
Rating: Summary: A soothing escape Review: All of Jan's Karon's novels epitomize escapism at it's best. Every time I finish one of her books, I am sorry and even a bit depressed at having to once again leave Mitford and it's charming, warm, and amusing residents. Start with At Home in Mitford, and enjoy this heartwarming series. You will wish that you lived in Mitford...and for a short while, you will feel as if you do.
Rating: Summary: Life-Affirming and Wonderful Review: As an cradle Episcopalian (a rara avis in and of itself) and a clergyman's daughter, I truly enjoyed reading not only this book, but all of the books in this series. I felt like I was home again, among people who speak my native language. I also appreciate the way Father Tim wears his religion like a comfortable sweatshirt -- you don't really notice it, but it pervades his life, and that of everyone with whom he comes in contact. So many books with a "churchy" theme tend to become "preachy" or over-bearing. A friend of mine (a fellow p.k.) bought me the first one, and when I had finished it, I was hooked! I bought the second one, and when the bookstore was closed for the holidays, checked the third and fourth ones out of the library to devour. I also bought the first one for my father for Christmas -- I know he will enjoy reading it as well (if my mother doesn't beat him to it).
Rating: Summary: If there were 6 stars, any book in the series would get them Review: All four books in the Mitford series were simply delightful! Seeing them in the bookstore, I bought them for my mother, but found myself engrossed after thefirst few pages and just couldn't quit! All of the characters are someone I know! What pleasant and peaceful (and charming!) reads all of these books are! Each one is a jewel! My mother is enjoying them now, and as she finishes each one, my teenage daughter is anxious to begin them!
Rating: Summary: A delightful reconnecting with life's simplicity! Review: Thirteen hallelujahs for an uncommon talent who captures the reader's mind and heart!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just the mention of Jan Karon's book titles spreads appreciative smiles across her reader's lips for her Hometown USA characters are irresistible. Even more unique, each volume travels a spiritual path that can't help but lift the human spirit. This writer offers SOMETHING OF VALUE for any age and I shall keep her books on my list for "special gifts."
Rating: Summary: My heart belongs to Mitford & her family! Review: Just finished Book Two, & Mitford & its residents remind me so much of my former home in Upstate NY & my former church. I can identify each of the Mitford residents with my friends from there. Almost like coming home again. I know my heart will break in two when I finish book four. Father Tim is so very much like our former pastor & has the same qualities I love about him. Jan Karon has given us all a little bit of Americana in Mitford, whether we live in the country or long for it, we can escape to Mitford for a short breath of fresh air.
Rating: Summary: Reading on the edge of my seat! Review: Sadie's love story brought tears in At Home in Mitford; Sadie's goodbye brought tears in These High, Green Hills, and this third book in the Mitford series kept me on the edge of my seat...a great read for suspense in the cave. My great aunt, Annie Smith Bowie, wrote poetry about beautiful Blowing Rock and the author's birthplace, Lenoir, N.C. Her work came to life through Father Tim and Cynthia's love of the mountains. Karon's writing depicts an ideal yet human Rector in a natural society. I can't finish Out of Canaan. What will Father Tim's flock read next? As Sadie said, "sing on" Jan. We are waiting for your lyrics in book five.
Rating: Summary: An idylic place to visit. Review: I am just starting the fourth book in this series, "Out of Canaan" and I would agree with the people that say this isn't realistic. But we live with realism every day. It's kind of nice to take a vacation to such a peaceful place for only $12.00! I love this place.
