Rating: Summary: Bold Quest Review: A subject that no one likes to talk about because its so morbid. However, in rare cases, I guess this sort of thing does happen. A friend loaned me this book and told me it was the author's first book and for a first attempt, the writing was so-so. It'll get better as she continues to write stories. A 3.6 for My Daughter's Boyfriend. In the meantime, read LUST OF THE FLESH. Its a story about a corrupted district attorney that gets involved in scandalous schemes through deceit, betrayal, lust, murder, mystery, suspense, romance and sex galore. Is he really the father of his ex-wife's promiscuous teenage daughter's infant son? Or has he been set up through DNA? Believe me, it can happen. A great pageturning novel with enlightening messages through and through.
Rating: Summary: Great Debut Review: Cydney Rax makes her writing debut with My Daughter's Boyfriend, the story of a single mother raising her 17-year old daughter, Lauren. Tracy has always asked Lauren to wait until she has sex, which Lauren has no problem doing, but Aaron, Lauren's college boyfriend does. It is no secret that Tracy and Aaron will have a sexual relationship, one they obviously must hide from Lauren. And one, Tracy harbors guilt for, but will her guilt make her stop something that she should never have started in the first place? What, besides sex, does this thirty-something single mother have in common with a college student? And how on earth could a mother sleep with her daughter's boyfriend? I'm sure some readers will be able to relate because there are some who have either been the mother, the daughter or the boyfriend. As I was reading the book, I found it hard to believe that this was the author's first novel. I loved the fact the story line did not get weighed down with too much description and that Cydney Rax left enough for the reader's imagination to take over. My Daughter's Boyfriend is not a story that is told often, but we all know this happens. Being a mother of a teenage daughter, I tried to put myself in Tracy's shoes. I couldn't see myself falling into such a love triangle. At times, I was so upset with the mother, I wanted to put the book down, but couldn't because I wanted to know what would happen to that messy situation in the end. While reading, I was on an emotional rollercoaster. One minute, I hated Tracy and thought she was immature and irrational, the next, I felt sorry for her. In the end, the book did not leave me disappointed and I have included this novel as a recommended read for Ebony Dimensions Book club. I'm sure we're going to have fun with this one, and knowing the ladies, our discussion will get quite lively.(...)
Rating: Summary: Corny! Review: I am sorry, but this book was BORING, slow moving, and straight up fiction! The tone/voice was dry, the author told a cautious ineffective story, that could have been a pageturner. I agree, one star for courage and one star for effort. This review is by no means a bash to the author, it is purely based on MDB. Perhaps the author will show growth on her next effort.

Rating: Summary: Disappointed Review: I gave this book 2 stars. Why? One star for the effort the author putting into writing the book since writing isn't easy and another star for the concept of the book. The idea was good.It really was but unfortunately I wasn't feeling this book.I waited for a long time for this book and I kept reading the reviews and most people said the book was good and some said that it wasn't and don't waste your money. At the time I figured that everybody has there own opinion and I decided to read it for myself.Well... let's just say that I'm glad I checked it out at the library instead of buying it.It just wasn't what I expected. The story was slow and it didn't really pick up until after chapter 13.If it was any other book I would have been put it down but I didn't because I wanted to see how Lauren was gonna react to her 34 yr old mother sleeping with her 21 yr old boyfriend (soon to be ex-boyfriend).Lauren acted like the mother and her mother Tracy acted like the child.Tracy is selfish and trifling.Lauren was furious when she found out about them which is understandable but for Tracy to want her daughter to accept her relationship was just unbelievable. Then on top of that I kept falling asleep with the book open.It took me a few days to read this book.Normally it takes me 2-3 days to finish a book but this one was more like a week.I wouldn't recommend it but if it's on your to read list like it was on mine then go for it regardless of what you read. But overall,I didn't care for this book and I'm glad I checked it out instead of buying!
Rating: Summary: Not Good At All Review: I have to agree with some reviewrs as well as be honest. For such a real issue that could happen this book was not a good representation of what it could have been. I gave the author one star for having the courage to write this storyline and one star for writing certain scenes that made me believe I was in that state. But I mean come on Tracey was a monster for doing what she was doing to her child and thinking it was okay. Then to have such a well adjsuted child as Lauren it made you wonder who was the adult. To make matters worse the author leads you to believe Tracey was pregnant by Aaron but that storyline never goes anywhere. All I can say is it was a good try for this author but I would not recommend anybody to buy this book. Buy a Hoagie instead.
Rating: Summary: it's spicy, but it rings true Review: I know some people may be turned off by the subject of this book---a woman getting it on with her daughter's boyfriend--but it is worth reading just for sheer entertainment value. I give Cyney Rax a lot of credit for the way she handles the characters in this book. Tracey, the mom, comes across as totally likeable and real, and you sympathize with her even when she's doing things that she shouldn't. It would have been real easy for this book to be a soap opera or just plain nasty, but it's not. It's both sexy and heartfelt, and you'll recognize a lot of yourself in these characters even if they're acting crazy. this is not your typical trashy black fiction read. It's very hot, but the author keeps it very real, and the ending is surprising and satisfying, and also pretty true to life. this is definitely a book worth buying.
Rating: Summary: STRAIGHT UP GARBAGE Review: I previously reviewed this book and my review is not showing on my page for some reason. Maybe because I cursed a little because this garbage had me hot. I have never read such a classless book like this. No mother in their right mind would hurt their only daughter that way. I couldn't get into this book no matter how hard I tried. Don't patronize this crap. This book is not worth the paper it was wrote on.
Rating: Summary: hot and entertaining--and thought-provoking Review: Ignore the reviewers below who get all personal about the author--they clearly have problems that go far beyond what they read.
My book club in Brooklyn read this book and down to the last one of us, we thoroughly enjoyed it (there are 15 women and 6 men in my club). My sister's book club in Baltimore has also started reading it and they're looking forward to getting together to talk about it.
Yeah, it's about a loaded love triangle, but that kind of situation, and worse, happens all the time in real life. So why not write about it in fiction? Especially if you can make a good book out of it, which is what this author does.
Cydney Rax does an excellent job of keeping the plot going and her characters come across as very real, three-dimensional and likeable. We all felt that Tracey was someone who "has issues", but she's not a horrible person, and you come to identify with her even if you don't approve of what she's doing. And there are lot of funny, steamy and laugh-out-loud moments in this novel. You simply won't be able to stop reading once you've started, which is how you know a book is good.
The best fiction isn't always safe and cozy--it makes you think at the same time it keeps you entertained. This book has that same unputdownable quality and while the topic is provocative, the way it's treated is not trashy. Read it and you won't be disappointed. If you have a book group or some friends who like to read, this is the book for you, because it will generate discussion and enjoyment. Three weeks later, we're still talking about this book, and many of us have recommended it to others. I'm looking forward to whatever Cydney Rax writes next.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Debut! Review: Lauren Hayes and Aaron Khristian Oliver are the perfect happy, young couple. They have a great relationship and they get along well and care for each other a lot. They only seem to have one issue with their relationship and that's sex. Aaron wants it but Lauren's just not quite ready since she's only 17 and her mother does not want her to go down the road she's already traveled - a young, unwed parent. So, listening to her mother's advice, she refrains from sex and she's proud of knowing she's still a virgin and is just waiting for the right time. Unfortunately for Lauren, Tracey Davenport steps in the way and is about to steal her man and, it just so happens that Tracey is Lauren's MOTHER! Tracey, after being unceremoniously dumped by her now ex-boyfriend, Steve Monroe, starts to notice and like Aaron after he visits her and her daughter's home a few times. One thing leads to the next, and they're in a full-fledged SCANDALOUS love affair and Lauren's left in the dark... With dialogue that's honest and emotions that put the reader in the scenes, Cydney Rax has written a book that will have you laughing one minute, cheering the next minute, and then mad at someone's stupid antics in the next. These are characters that the reader will care about and root for even if they realize that they might end up rooting for the wrong ones! My Daughter's Boyfriend, told from the perspective of Tracey, Lauren, and Aaron, is a roller coaster ride of what lengths people will go to in order to try to make themselves happy and fulfilled. A fast paced, page-turner by author Cydney Rax is sure to be a hit amongst lovers of contemporary African American fiction and her book is sure to give people something to talk about in book club discussions around the world.
Rating: Summary: Book Was That Bad Review: My Daughter's Boyfriend by Cydney Rax has set African-American literature back by about 20 years. Cydney's subject matter and writing style is down right vulgar and ignorant! I cannot believe that this book even got published let alone had the audacity to grace the stands of my local book store. This woman should be tarred and feathered for writing such a poor imitation of prose that tries to pass as literature. She should have asked permission before writing this book and been denied. Cydney Rax, it's time to go back to the drawing board.
