Rating: Summary: Nervous by Zane was better Review: This makes the third book I have read by an Black-American author that involves child molestation- God Don't Like Ugy by Mary Monroe, Nervous by Zane, and this book. This book was a good story but everything was revealed in such a neat package that it just didn't move me like the books by Mary Monroe and Zane. This is the story of a film maker who loses her family in a car accident and then suffers a nervous breakdown while temporarily living with her father and step-mother. The lead character is institutionalized and an attempt is made to use electroshock therapy on her. She is saved from electroshock therapy and soon realizes why she can't allow herself to be close to others. The most pivotal part of the story to me is the relationship between the lead character, Rayne, and her best friend, Gayle. Through good times and bad, these two have been there for each other and that is definitely a positive aspect of the story. Like I stated earlier though, the molestation storyline was wrapped up too cleanly and nicely for me. In the span of 6 months to a year the following happens (details omitted): 1. Lead character discovers why she can't remember aspects of her life and moves on with her life 2. The best friend and her husband resolve all their issues 3. The lead character meets a man who resolves all his issues 4. The step mother resolves all her issues 5. The father is confronted. All this happening in a 6 month period seemed a little incredulous to me..
Rating: Summary: DONNA HILL'S BEST BOOK EVER!!! Review: You will not want to miss this book! I was skeptical about reading this book at first. I read some mainstream but I consider myself a diehard romantic. I am so glad that I didn't follow my first instinct. This book was awesome. I literally could not put it down! The emotional roller coaster ride I was on lasted five hours. It left me with a feeling of having lived this character's life through her eyes. It was as if I could feel everything the characters in the story were feeling. The feelings of fear of the unknown, loss of innocence and of a loved one, mistrust of those closest to you and then redemption and salvation. This book is definitely a keeper. Miss Hill has written a book that will make you open your eyes to see that the grass is not always greener in the yard next door. This book is a must read! You will not be disappointed.
