Summary: Not worth the money
Review: This book may be 23 pages but it is a ten minute read, I guess, (...), that I will never read it. There is double spacing, lots of pictures and very little to recommend it. I have never been so aggravated. I meant this to be a gift. I would be ashamed to give it to anyone! It is not even worth the money and time to send it back. (...)

Summary: The Mitford Snowmen
Review: This book was such a disappointment. I am a Jan Karon fan. But, I thought this book was a real effort to sell the public an item with no substance. Thank goodness I caught this book coming across the desk at our library and checked it out before buying it. Each year I buy a Christmas book to add to our family's collection, but this is not one I want. I loved the cover and the darling illustrations, but for me there was no story!

Summary: Short--and sweet!
Review: This exceedingly short, 32-page book gives a hint of the delights to be found in Jan Karon's other books. It has to do with a snowman-building contest, but the characters and situations are not developed and might not make much sense to someone who hadn't read the other Mitford books. It probably took me less time to read the book than it did to write this review, but if you would like just a small taste of Jan Karon's style, this might be the introduction you need.

Summary: A Nice Christmas Story but...
Review: This is a nice Christmas Story but for the best one of the year, go have a look at Hickam's The Coalwood Way. A superb Christmas treat! I fell in love with Sonny's squirrel and as always the Hickam family is wonderful to visit again. Jan's a wonderful writer for family stories and so is Homer Hickam, also with the best family book of the season, Sky of Stone. If you love Mitford, then Hickam's Coalwood Trilogy is for you!

Summary: An Expensive Short Story with Little Plot
Review: This short story occurs before Christmas in Mitford, and people admire the Christmas lights and wish each other Merry Christmas. That's the essence of the Christmas story here. The 1200 word short story covers an impromptu snowman-building contest, with colorful water color illustrations. Mayor Esther Cunningham buys everyone doughnuts and hot chocolate.

Apparently, this is a children's type book for adults.

You will get a warm glow from the good cheer that the Mitford people bear towards one another. You can probably get more good cheer, however, from rereading another of Ms. Karon's books that you liked . . . and buy yourself some hot chocolate and doughnuts with the money you save.

Most short story writers will feel that they could have done better with the same subject.

I graded the book at one star for being misleading in its subtitle, "A Christmas Story," and being a poor value for the money. If the book were free without the misleading subtitle, I would have graded it as a two star effort.

Summary: A Light Snack!
Review: Truly more of a greeting card than a book, the 23 page story is a charming holiday glimpse of our Mitford friends and the joy of an impromptu snowman building contest. And if you have priced cards recently - the value is good! The writing is charming, the illustrations a delight - but don't expect more than a light snack - this is NOT one of the lovely, lengthy Mitford novels. It would be a perfect hostess gift or a little something for one of those people who have everything. If you want something more substantial, a new Mitford book is promised for July, IN THIS MOUNTAIN (which Amazon is kindly allowing us to preorder!)

Summary: What? What? Whaaaaa?
Review: What happened here? Jan is usually (Always) very on the up and up. The plot is the problem, there is none. It just goes to show even the best have bad days. The character is also very weak here, I wonder if someone else really did not write this? Hmmmm...

Recommend reading SB 1 or God by KARL MARK MADDOX

Summary: Take A Minute Timeout For Mitford At Christmas
Review: While Christmas shopping, I saw this little Christmas story and decided to purchase a copy. I didn't buy it for an indepth novel drawing me for hours and days into Mitford. Anyone who browsed this book could see that it is just a feel good Christmas story taking you in a moment at Christmas time to Mitford with some of the characters we have gotten to know and love.

I am really perplexed by all these bad reviews and and 1 stars. If one buys this Christmas story for what it is....a short story and to put in the Mitford collection, then I think the reader will be happy with their purchase. If you buy this knowing it is a small leaf through booklet and a short story but expect to be treated to Mitford in the fashion of a 200+ page novel, you will be disappointed. There are some Jan Karon fans/readers who followed some of her short stories as she published them in "Victoria" magazine. To me this is one of those kind of short stories only with a cover and in a booklet form to keep with the Mitford collection.

I personally chose to see it as a short story and a nice little book to display on my coffee table during the holiday season amongst the Christmas decor.

The reading of the short story will only take the reader a few minutes. Although the story isn't weighty in writing literature, it has the potential of taking you away to a place to reduce the stress of the Christmas hustle bustle and give the reader a break from the wrapping chores. What such a nice little place to steal away to just for a few minutes...maybe even help in the creating of snowmen with some of the townfolk of Mitford.

If you like little coffee table books, if you like short stories and if you just want a little Jan Karon piece to go along with your Mitford collection...pick up a copy of "The Mitford Snowman". It costs little and it can add Christmas fuzzies to your holiday.

If you are looking for the next Mitford novel installment, maybe you should think about whether this short story is for you.

Summary: Very quick, and a cute story
Review: While not very long, this story fulfilled my desire to go back to Mitford and catch up with old friends. I read this book on my lunch hour. It's a cute story about a snowmen building contest in the town of Mitford -- the prize being donuts from the bakery. Nothing fancy, but soon all the shopowners, and the Mayor, are jumping into the fray!! If you want a quick lunch time read that will get you into the holiday spirit -- this is the book for you!
