Summary: Makes you want to build one!
Review: Infectious short story involving the residents of Mitford in a Main Street snowman bulding contest. A heart warming companion to the charming Mitford series. Keep it coming Ms. Karon!!

Summary: The Mitford Snowmen
Review: Jan Karon has tremendously dissappointed me with this book! This book had so many possibilities. However,it gives the appearance that Ms. Karon used this as an excuse to make money and to push a line of snowmen on the consumer through Hallmark. I should have listened to the reviews I read before ordering it. It was definately the poorest excuse for a book that I have seen in a long time

Summary: Waste of time and money
Review: Love all of Jan Karon's Mitford series, but still don't understand the purpose of this foolish endeavor.

Summary: Family Reading for Christmas
Review: Make some hot chocolate, turn on the tree, gather the kiddies and enjoy this delightful story by Jan Karon. It's a perfect read for Christmas, and sure to become a classic. We're not just talking about Mitford. We're talking about Mitford at CHRISTMAS. Accept this little book for what it is...a delightful Christmas tale designed to bring a smile to your little one's face as well as a feeling of nostalgia for small town living. Pack it away carefully with your ornaments and Christmas angel so that you and your family can enjoy a fireside reading year after year.

Summary: Can't make a snowman out of SLUSH!
Review: Mama mia! I cannot believe one single soul( considering the number of people it takes to get a book into print and on the market) in the Jan Karon corner (including Jan herself!) did not have the honesty to say, "This isn't worth the paper it's written on."

Did the publisher actually think the fans of Jan Karon would accept such a...a...book? story? whatever? just because her name was on the cover??????

I thought after the disappointing WEDDING STORY (everyone is entitled to a "mistake" in judgement now and then) Karon's next tale would be on the caliber of BACK HOME IN MITFORD. This only goes to prove that even a good author and a very distinguished publishing house does not equal a good book.

Shame, shame on all those involved in the biggest sham this holiday season! Surely many of their Christmas "stockings" will be full of coal this year. Coal and slush!

Terry, a very disappointed reader

Summary: A display book
Review: OK - here's the deal. This is a cute little book that tells about a nice little snowman-building contest in Mitford. The moral of the story - don't be too busy during the holiday season that you can't stop everything to be spontaneous and have a little fun. That's it. A nice moral. The illustrations are cute and the book will look nice standing up on a shelf, surrounded by the cute little resin Mitford snowmen that a well known card store is selling. (Which, is the other reason for this book. If you are going to sell snowmen to go along with the current snowman craze, why not write an explanation about why you are selling "Mitford" snowmen when, in fact, snowmen have not been mentioned in the Mitford books before. I don't think.) So enjoy the book for a little fluff. Put it out on a shelf during the holidays to remind yourself to be spontaneous and have fun. And don't try to compare it to a regular Mitford novel. It wasn't meant to be one.

Summary: Delicious dessert??
Review: This book bills itself by saying 'if you find the Mitford novels a feast, you'll find the Mitford Snowmen a delicious dessert.' That may be true but this dessert barely filled my back tooth. The type in the book covers 4' x 3.5' of the page and there are only 23 pages to the book! Of those 23 pages, 14 have type with the remaining being graphics designed to sell greeting cards. Of the 14 with type, 5 also have graphics and two are half pages. Skip the book and, with the money you save, buy yourself a real dessert.

Summary: Mitford Snowmen - Another Christmas in Mitford
Review: This book is a simple, but telling rendition about how people in the town of Mitford celebrate the winter holidays: a snowman building contest. It has snowed in North Carolina, during the Christmas holidays, no regular occurence, and to celebrate, a few citizens (40 - 60 year old-types) start building snowmen. A friendly contest develops. After reading many Mitford books, which honor Christmas and all four seasons, I was delighted to see another Jan Karon book about the town everyone wants to live in or visit. The snowman contest is particularly delightful, because it revisits many of the mainstay characters of Mitford: J.C., Miss Rose and Percy. The Miss Rose snowman in the book wore a military jacket, part of her brother's uniform during the war and who died before he could marry Sadie Baxter (read the earlier books to find out Sadie's very important part in Mitfordlore). Christmas lights and tinsel hang about J.C., opposite of his gruff persona as local newsman and editor, and Percy has a pot on his head, a napkin bandana, and utensils for arms because he runs the local eatery, where many Mitsford residents like Father Tim, gather for a bite to eat, fellowship (fellowship, here is used in the religious context - religion is rock upon this town if built)and the latest town news. This book is a companion volume to the Mitford series books by Jan Karon. Alone, it stands as a sweet thin volume of winter's best attibutes. Together, with the Mitford collection, it adds richly to the complex small town and its insightful residents as depicted by Miss Karon. As an aside, Hallmark in 2001, sold many Mitford Snowmen bric-a-brac (which are adorable)and are the exact replicas of the illustrations (no artist credit mentioned ) in the 23 page book. It is my hope that Miss Karon was compelled to write the Mitford Snowmen, A Christmas Story, first and that the Hallmark followed with the snowmen items, and not vice-a-versa. After all, the refreshing thing about The Mitford Snowmen was that not about commericalism when it comes to Christmas. That is why we love the Mitford series. By the way, if you read this review after Hallmark has sold out of all the Mitford Snowmen, check Ebay. They are adorable. Who wins the snowman building contest? Read the book to find out!
