Rating: Summary: The Midwife's Tale Review: To Michael Kennedy of DC My review : What is YOUR problem young man ???
Rating: Summary: Midwifery Review: What is it about midwives? They really have a strong appeal for me. Perhaps it's related to never having given birth myself and knowing it's not going to happen. I really enjoyed The Midwives by Chris Bohjalian in its contemporary New England setting. Laskas' book is totally different but just as fascinating. The story is simpler, and the setting is removed in time and place-before, during and after the 1920s in backwoods West Virginia. It's a good yarn, beautifully told. Laskas' writing conveys the spirit of a place and time as well as the nuances of the relationship between a woman and her mother through the years. Not to mention the midwifery.
Rating: Summary: A wonderful voice Review: With a distinctive and engaging voice, Laskas tells the story of one West Virginian woman who touches the lives of many women around her. Through Elizabeth's eyes, we see life in a relatively isolated section of West Virginia. Laskas's well-crafted prose brings to life the spring winds on Denniker's Mountain, the cool waters of Kettle Creek, and the swelling bodies of the pregnant women Elizabeth and her mother served. An excellent read.
