Rating: Summary: In the Minority Review: Well, it seems everyone has become captivated with Bridget Jones. Everyone except me. Feilding's novel (and I use that term loosely) is stale, pedantic and as deep as a shoehorn. It is obvious that Feilding has a great ear for dialgue, and she certantly is capable of having insight into the battle of the sexes, but at what cost? "Bridget Jones' Diary" adds up to nothing; a year in the life of Miss Jones is nowhere near as exciting as a day of your own. What's lacking is immediacy; sure, Miss Jones could be the British "Ally McBeal", but there is a subtle distinction to be made: Ally is "everywoman", but she's got edge. Bridget Jones has neither an active imaginary life (a la McBeal), nor any edge whatsoever. I very much wanted to love this novel; nothing sounds as appealing to me as a witty, well-written "diary". This, however, wasn't it.
Rating: Summary: A disappointment Review: I had really looked forward to reading this book, but I found it full of tired cliches and stereotypes. I'm a thirty-something "singleton" myself, but found little to identify with even though I face the same issues. It wasn't nearly as funny as I expected.
Rating: Summary: There's a little Bridget in every woman... Review: Not since "Animal Husbandry" have I enjoyed a book as much as this. I had a creeping suspicion that Ms. Fielding must have been spying on me when writing this book. Then I realized that all the similarities must be due to the fact that I am a very normal single woman and that women all over the world go through the same things that I do. What a relief!
Rating: Summary: A Howler, yet poignant Review: Had a friend read this out loud to us at a bachelorette weekend on the beach - we wouldn't let her stop. Like other readers have said, I fell like 'I AM BRIDGET'. It has the feel of a British "Ally McBeal"... very entertaining, but many truths hit home. I can't wait to read the whole thing!
Rating: Summary: funny and delightful Review: I was skeptical of this book, but it turned out to be delightful. Given to me by a British friend, I was afraid I wouldn't understand all of it, but the different sense of humor (the British seem to laugh at themselves better than we do) made it extremely funny. I recommend it for most women, whatever your age (well, maybe my 80-year-old mom wouldn't like the language and some of the other stuff) because it has commonalities that we would sometimes like to forget. Go for it...it's a laugh. Probably shouldn't read it in bed with your husband/lover. Hmmm...
Rating: Summary: A man's thrilling guide to a desperate woman's soul Review: How do you understand a woman? You just get a man, take away his reason and his accountability--you'll have a perfect a woman! I got this quotation from Mr Urdell of 'As Good As It Gets' and I just learn the same fact from this hillariously funny book. I have a good laugh reading the book and I thought to myself what a funny book this is and how funny a woman can be. Bridget Jones is the woman of the 90's and we cannot run from the fact that most modern woman today are ridiculous and strange lots with their low self-esteem, broken pride and world of prejudices. This is a great thriller (discovery to a woman's soul) where you find endless nightmares and excitements in understanding a woman's feelings, thoughts and actions. If you come from planet Male, this is a must-read guide!
Rating: Summary: laugh and cry with Bridget Review: I put off reading the last chapter (month) for days 'coz I didn't want this book to end. When I finally read the last chapter, I immediately turned back to page 1 and read it all over again. That is how much I love this book. Thank you Helen.
Rating: Summary: A hillarious view of life from a "Thirtysomething" Review: What a hillarious look at the "Thirty-something" female world - how many other people can admit that their world parallels Bridget Jones' world?!! It was refreshing to read somthing that wasn't so serious for a change. More like Bridget Jones please!! I bought this book when I was last in the U.K. in June of '97 and have read it twice!
Rating: Summary: Laughs per minute (358) v.g. Review: Laughed til I could laugh no more. This is a great chic read... but I think that hubby will enjoy it just as much! Bridge is human. What more could you ask for? (I think the other Singaporean reader needs to have a few more alcohol units, and loosen up)
Rating: Summary: humorrous and straight to point - a funny and nice book! Review: The book gives an hylerias picture og life of an unmarried 30+! With female friends in the same lifesituation I really felt tthat it toouched parts of their life that a married-with-children alreaady has forgotten or doesn`t have reasons to know about
