Rating: Summary: Read her other one as well! Review: This book is completely brilliant, as most people of good taste and judgment have discovered by now. But her previous book, Cause Celeb, is also completely brilliant, and I think it's high time everybody read that too.
Rating: Summary: A terrific, funny, and honest look at "Singletons" today. Review: Helen Fielding does a wonderful job of showing readers what goes through the mind of a single woman in today's world. You feel as though you are abruptly thrown into her world on January 1, but by January 3 you find yourself cheering her on as though she were your best friend. I especially liked the true-to-life situations of looking for pantyhose in the morning, and four pairs later finding ones without visable holes, or runs...they just need to be untied from the knot they mysteriously tied themselves into while in the laundry basket! I found myself laughing out loud at the beach many times with this book. An easy, fun must-read at the beach book!
Rating: Summary: Hilarious snapshot of life for young, single woman Review: This book kept me laughing out loud from beginnning to end. Bridget became like a friend to me by her second day's entry in her diary, and I did not want the book to end. Bridget experiences the horror stories of life as a single woman whose biological clock has only a few ticks left. She verbalizes what many like her want to say though are unable to find the words, or the humor, with which to do so. Great read!
Rating: Summary: Arrested development Review: I think the main problem I had with this novel is the fact that it's not really a novel. As far as I understand it is based on two years' worth of columns Helen Fielding had written for a British newspaper. The readers of such a serial are bound to expect the same people week after week, and the odds that Bridget will change in response to her experiences are about as good as Charlie Brown getting a date with the red-haired girl, or as Jerry Seinfeld dedicating his life to a cause. That is not a problem if you meet the character in small, regular installments, but it does distract from the book if you get all of it in a single dose. Which, of course, also indicates that I read the book rather quickly. It is fun, and even if I might not get all the girl-stuff, it certainly keeps you busy trying to pick up all the Jane Austen references.
Rating: Summary: Finally, someone puts into words how every women feels Review: Bridget Jones's Diary by Helen Fielding is a book that let's you forget of your troubles and gives you a chance to laugh at someone else's. If you think you are having a hard time with being single in the nineties, just pick up this book and you will be thanking God for your life. It is an easy read that is consistently entertaining. Bridgette Jones is a parallel to Ally McBeal, but Jones actually has substance. Stop whatever you are reading and pick up this book.
Rating: Summary: Don't let the cover and titile entice you - it's awful! Review: I was very excited to order this book as I heard rave reviews from critics about Bridget Jones. Let me tell you, I hated the book so much I almost didn't finish it. The character, Bridget, is stupid and pathetic. How anyone could find her amusing is beyond my understanding - her life is sad and she is not using her life to it's best potential. I heard they are making a movie about it - steer clear, no matter what the hype says!!!!!!!
Rating: Summary: Bridget...Oh, Bridget! Review: Hours spend reading novel (4). Cigaretts smoked 12 (one after each months diary entry). Weight: 140 (smoked instead of ate out of frustration).8:00 p.m. Writing review for Amazon. Com. 8:01 p.m. Wondering what to say about Bridget. 8:02 p.m. Everyone loves Bridget Jones. Everyone but, perhaps, me. Is it because I am a male that I find Bridget rather innocuous? Or is it because I feel that author, Helen Fielding, chose to write not about the perils of a young single British woman but created rather yet another male-bashing story told by a rather vacuous woman. 8:03 p.m. I don't mean to say that Bridget is an air-head. However some of the situations she becomes involved with in her relationships with men deserve to end up the way they do and Bridget should not complain. 8:15 p.m. When I began this book I laughed until I almost cried. Unfortunately the laughter, for me, disappeared. Bridget Jones's Diary is a wonderfully inventive idea. It is novel, kitch and cute. It is appearent that Ms. Fielding has a funny sense of humor. A diary-like format for a book is most clever. Why couldn't Bridget Jones have been a woman with more substance? 8:30 p.m. Woman love this book and buy it as fast as the publisher can print it. 8:31 p.m. Men: Think, before purchasing.
Rating: Summary: Funny book! A page-turner! Review: I really enjoyed this book and think most women can relate to it. I would definitely read another book by this author.
Rating: Summary: A must read for single women of the 90's Review: Single women must read this... then pass it on to their silly married friends! A friend picked this up for me in London 2 weeks ago, finished it in less than 2 days. Having lived in London myself almost 10 years ago, it was like going back to a familiar place. Bridget Jones is a young 30-something singleton who obsesses about her weight, her alcohol unit and cigarette consumption, and the men in her life (or lack thereof). Her insights are hilarious, sometimes painful, and occasionally ludicrous... but a fun ride regardless. You will wish you knew her by the time you are finished with this book. My only hope is that the publisher didn't dumb down the incredible English wit for the American reader. There are different terms and spellings than American English, but be patient and you'll get it! Enjoy!! CR-
Rating: Summary: Tasty as a Cadbury Milk Tray Review: I bought this book for the plane ride back from London. It's perfect in that setting...or whenever you need something purely fun. Great English humor in the tradition of P.G. Wodehouse.
