Rating: Summary: One of the most awful books I've ever read Review: Awful, awful awful. The main character is impossibly silly, vain and vacuous. How can anyone possibly relate to/admire this character? The plot (what little there was) was incredibly predictable. The love interest is called Mr Darcy for crying out loud! The first half dozen diary entry headings (weight loss, No. of cigarettes etc)were mildly amusing. It really started to grate by the 300th one. The diary entries themselves simply became mind-numbing. I think I smirked twice through the whole book but found my intelligence insulted on every page. What is really sad is that this book portrays "modern woman" (whatever that may be) as a self-centred, self-pitying air-head. OK there may be some out there but reading about their pathetic antics is simply not funny. Please do not think this is the female version of Nick hornby's excellent High Fidelity - its not. Its exceedingly unfunny and verges on the offensive. If you want an example of how the diary format! can be used to genuine comic effect then read Sue Townsend's "Diary of Adrian Mole" series. One last thing - if you think I don't understand because it's a "woman thing" then I can assure you that my assessment is supported by many female friends that I have discussed this book with.
Rating: Summary: There are a lot of us Bridgets out there Review: God, I didn't want to like this book. I wanted even less to relate to the character: she's vapid and self-absorbed. But I saw in Bridget myself and so many of my girlfriends -- thirtysomething career women who would like nothing more than to be poised and living meaningful lives, but whose heads are crammed with nonsensical and often pathetic anxieties. If it weren't so funny, the book would be a really depressing commentary on our pretty shallow lives. But at least it made me realize I'm not alone!
Rating: Summary: Continous entertainment. You will never want it to end. Review: It was so refreshing reading this novel. A best friend to single women who may be able to identify and laugh at, and with, Bridget Jones. Men, honestly, you would love it too. This is the kind of book you will cherish by your bedside. I loved it! One of the best, light-hearted books I have ever read. A good summer read.
Rating: Summary: Should have waited for the paperback. Review: Must join those who give this book a barely passable review. The author is obviously capable of producing better. Bridget is a brainless, self-absorbed twit, of the type that give all women a bad review. I gave it two stars only because the characterizations were decent; otherwise the book is a waste of time and money.
Rating: Summary: Girl Power With Laughter Review: So, we women have a sexual sell by date? I don't think so and niether does Briget Jones! I read this first as a column and waited and waited for it to be published in novel form. Single life is merely different from married life, not worse than is a message woemn need to hear, repeatedly. Bridget's holding pout for someone worth marrying is a wonderful stance that flies in the face of all teh statistical studies. Will Bridget finally land her Mr Darcy? Who knows? As long as we all can watch her in the attepmting, we can be happy for her. Also, if you liked Bridget Jones, you should try Animal Husbandry Laura Zigman.
Rating: Summary: Not waiting to exhale Review: This is perfect summer reading--quick, entertaining, and easy on the nerves. Much less annoying than Ally McBeal (someone give that gal a BigMac and some pride!), Bridget does not take herself nearly as seriously as some readers might expect her to. The diary format allows us to forgive her relentless self-criticism, because that's what diaries are for. Bridget's diary frees her to be absolutely unmerciful to her friends, and even worse to whoever she thinks has wronged her, and in this she is completely convincing. She does not spare herself, either--she takes as much of a pounding as she doles out, and often more. The caricatures of the people with whom Bridget interacts--parents' nosy friends, smug marrieds, psychotic bosses, nasty coworkers and neurotic singletons are delightfully one-dimensional. After all, diaries do not have to be fair. The fairytale ending was a letdown, but with any luck, Bridget will soon be on her own again. She lacks the qualification! s to remain in a functional, boring, adult relationship for long. I'm waiting for Diary, Part II.
Rating: Summary: Great Fun and Easy Read! Review: I really enjoyed reading about Bridget Jones....also the weekly newspaper column written by Fielding (available online). I think that both men and women will enjoy the humor of this book. I look forward to more books that depict the stuggles of women and relationships!
Rating: Summary: Left me wanting more Review: She seems to have encapsuled womens(certainly mine) inner thoughts and concerns. She let me know that I was not alone in them. And I felt better.
Rating: Summary: If you're in your 40s, this will depress you beyond belief. Review: This is, quite simply, a sad little book. To think that this book is being touted as "humorous" or as a representing "what every woman thinks" is truly amazing in this day and age. In a nutshell Bridget is a twit and quite stupid. The only thing that makes you feel sympathy for her is that she is an alcoholic---a problem which neither she nor the author seem to acknowledge on any level, unless that is, the author thought this was screamingly funny. I was compelled to finish it in the same way one watches a bad TV movie. Perhaps it will appeal to people in their twenties, but the question is, why????
Rating: Summary: A v.v. good read Review: I really enjoyed this book, and not just becuase I'm a single woman. It made me laugh out loud and to me that is the ultimate summer read. Men, try to remember your sense of humor. This is a comedy not a commentary on society.
