Rating: Summary: Charmingly funny Review: To answer the question of a previous reviewer, the term "shag" existed BEFORE Austin Powers in British slang. It is not trying to "replace" its American equivalent; it's just that the author is British. Hey, this book is so far [I'm 3/4 through it] so incredibly relaxing and hilarious. Ah, yes. If you want to laugh about yuppies networking and a thirty-something "modern woman" 's getting through the office, through strange parents, a fat boss, men... and die laughing at the same time, check it out. If you take it for what it is , a comedy novel about a year in a typical English woman's life in her yuppie thirties, without a subconscious literary critic mindset you 'll appreciate it ! At the very least, it shall relieve your stress. So important these days. Two thumbs up! Fantastic comedy.
Rating: Summary: Fun Read..and frightfully true!!! Review: This book reflects the best and worst of modern day society...Great fun...written with tremendous humor and wit
Rating: Summary: The literary equivalent of cotton candy Review: Helen Fielding should be congatulated for contriving a highly marketable concept for a book. Moreover, there are, in fact, some individually funny gags and giggles contained in *Bridget Jones' Diary*. Overall, however, reading the book is very much like consuming cotton candy--it seems superficially appealing, but ultimately it's trivial and unsatisfying.I would give Fielding some credit for creating the amusingly neurotic diarist Bridget were she not quite so blatantly just a British version of Cathy Guisewite's "Cathy" comic strip character. And the cutesy incorporation of bits and pieces of *Pride and Prejudice* is handled so heavy-handedly that it ultimately seems more annoying than clever. Also, I would be more kindly disposed toward the novel had the ending not been so amateurish, contrived, and just plain dumb. By the time I closed this book for the last time, I confess I was berating myself for having wasted the time and money on Bridget and her trivial little life.
Rating: Summary: For Singletons and Smug Marrieds too Review: This book cracked me up! To all the critical critics: lighten up. The stigma of being single, esp. at Christmas, is so true. Loved her disasterous dinner parties! Ranks right up there with that Bucket woman's candlelight suppers in pure enjoyment! Can definately relate to the difficulties in leaving the house in the morning, with all your clothes dirty and pantyhose shrunk to your crotch. Just ordered High Fidelity and am anxiously awaiting same.
Rating: Summary: Read it in two days. Review: Favorite item on the New Year's Resolution List: "Will go to the gym every day, and not merely to buy sandwhich." How can you go wrong with this book?
Rating: Summary: Engaging and Amusing! Review: Bridget Jones's Diary is a wonderful book that is completely worth reading. Having just returned from England myself, I loved reading the English slang that Fielding uses. Yes, November and December are a bit outlandish, but it provides a great ending to an entertaining book. I can't wait to read the sequel!
Rating: Summary: A book for EVERY woman who's coping with life..... Review: and wants to laugh out loud about it. I found this book to be really amusing and the writing style refreshing. It covers a broad range of problems most women deal with in their everyday life -- their loves, their jobs, their families and friends. Helen Fielding should continue with Bridget's stories. P.S. I especially liked the synopsis at the beginning of each day with her weight and cigarette, alcohol and caloric intake. Many of us can relate to agonizing over those issues.
Rating: Summary: A fun and fufilling read. Review: I loved this book because Bridget's trivial life is easy to relate to. I think people are taking it too seriously, and should just take it for what it's worth. The writing style isn't supposed to be Jane Austin worthy...this is a diary and who writes like that in a diary? I don't think anyone says, "This is exactly my life!" but Bridget's thinking processes and ways of handling situations are so true to life. Everyone wants to be noble and do the best thing, but people like Bridget do the realistic thing, and that's what I related to. It's a very fun read, and I highly recommend it.
Rating: Summary: For a 56 yr. old , no way!!! For a 25 yr old, prob. dynamit Review: First, I agree with so many of the reviews!!! Vapid, hollow, etc. But, I think the thing that bothered me most was the use of the word "shag" or "shagged". I know the Austin Powers movie has made it a popular euphomism, but isn't it just another word for "F---"??? Are we going to replace "F---" with "shag" as an OK thing to say!!! See, I've already said it!! I guess so!!! I am by no means a prude, but I suppose this dumb, vapid so called "Diary" is better left to the younger crowd!!! And god knows, I hope they don't follow suit!!!!
Rating: Summary: Thank God I'm not the only one who thinks these thoughts! Review: Loved it. Perfect for the beach or the life cycle! It was like reading my friend's journal--a very good friend.
