Rating: Summary: This could be me... Review: I can totally relate. I was aghast to realize that I was as neurotic as Bridget in my single days. Now that I'm in a relationship, I have entirely NEW neurotic behaviour. I wonder if Bridget will continue in her diary about the joys and angst of life with Mark Darcy. I hope so.
Rating: Summary: Laughed out loud Review: This was such a fun read - and quick too. I love British humor. Being single realy helped me relate.
Rating: Summary: ULTIMATELY GRASPING Review: I was so wrong to have thought it would be rather boring. A s I read through the pages, I thanked my cousin for recommending it. It's hilarious and witty. Such a fantastic character! Contrary to some reviewer's comments, I think Bridget has a very high self-esteem (they certainly couldn't get to the depth of it)'cause anyone who takes herself lightly is very self-confident).Her approach to life, herself, her relations with the other gender and her family make her unique and a charming character. I even thought I would have liked to be her!! Though I'm married I could easily identify myself with Bridget and sympathised with her point of view about how the society treats singletons. It was a great bed-time companion except for that, my husband did get disturbed by my frequent giggles!A very talented writer as she is, dear Helen FÝelding, thanks so much for such a wonderful work but I have a little note for you, I must admit I was shocked and a bit offended by your remarks about Turkey and Turkish people in your book, seems your knowledge on this matter is more than limited. Hope one day you'll have the chance to come and visit Ýstanbul (would be glad to host you) (next year's resolution?!)and your perception will certainly upgrade. Nevertheless, wonderful book!
Rating: Summary: Gut-bustingly funny! Review: Immediately after I finished the last word of this hilarious, refreshing, and upbeat novel, I began to read it over again. Bridget's real-life dilemmas hit way close to home, and reading about your own situations makes Bridget your best friend. So hah! to all you critics out there who think that it's cotton-candy fluff - this diary is a chronicle of a woman's life that tells it like it is!
Rating: Summary: FUNNY FUNNY!! Review: I really liked this book. It was not at all trivial (can't life be like that) or a waste of time. It was a lighthearted look in to a single women's life and her desire to be independent but have a meaningful realtionship. She is in her 30's so people keep reminding her of her tick-tock clock. Grab it and have a good laugh and either be thankful that your life is not like this or be thankful that you probably aren't the only one with these problems. But Laugh!!! That's how life is.
Rating: Summary: LOVED IT! Review: I thought this book was a riot! I laughed through the entire thing! I think if people quit picking up a book thinking it's the next pulitzer, they would get a lot more enjoyment out of reading a story for what it really is...entertainment! This book was pure entertainment. I am a woman in my thirties, unmarried and wondering "How did I manage to end up in this job!?" If you are a woman and have ever been asked "Why aren't you married yet?" or "Don't you WANT a family?" you will relish this book! Bridget is funny and insecure one day and sassy and sexy the next. I think we can all identify with her and with her relationships with her friends, family and co-workers.
Rating: Summary: Spot on Review: Congratulations to Helen Fielding on a brilliant work... so many times I and people I know have been in her situation. Being able to laugh at Bridget is comforting for our own struggles.. I felt offended at the snobbish reviews below..... I guess you have to have experienced the things that Bridget did to really appreciate the book..... and being british helps...
Rating: Summary: truly funny Review: I read this in late '98, but now I'm writing a review of it. I thought it was really hilarious. Bridget was a character that I could sympathize (okay, I'm 16, so I didn't really relate to many of her situations, but she was a character that doesn't annoy the hell out of you...). Her problems were so real. Oh, and if you liked Pride and Prejudice then you'd love this book. I enjoyed the correlation. I think that if you don't like it, then you must be over analyzing it. The book is so straight forward and there is no underlying meaning so deal!
Rating: Summary: a little bit of fun Review: Sometimes it's nice to pick up a book that makes you laugh, that you can whip through in a day or two. Please, this isn't 'War and Peace' y'all! Read it poolside, or in the bathroom, don't expect it to change your life. Just have fun with it!
Rating: Summary: Not all it was promised to be Review: Many of those I spoke to who had read this novel claimed it was hilarious and that it was a "must read". It was humorous but I found I was bogged down with the main character's lack of self esteem and her constant battle with weight gain/loss, smoking, and drinking. Her obsession with finding a man was also somewhat tedious. The actual comic relief came from her mother, who was annoying, but whose relationship with Julio, a slimy Latino criminal, was laughable. I guess I was expecting more from this story...it was OK but not terribly memorable. A worthwhile find for a long plane ride or a summer's day on the beach.
