Rating: Summary: This book is so much fun that you can't put it down. Review: A friend told me about this book last year, but I only picked it up a few nights ago. By the following evening, I had finished and was heading to my local bookstore to pick up the sequel. (Sorry Amazon.com, I just couldn't wait.) I advise you to order this book along with the sequel, so you don't end up paying bookstore prices. Chances are you will want to read them both.
Rating: Summary: not a rave Review: How could I resist a book with such rave reviews? Unfortunately, I didn't fall in line to be among those of you gushing over this novel. After the first 50 odd pages I revisited the site and re-evaluated my interpretations of customer's reviews. Had I missed something? Yes, there were a few skeptics in the reviews and those that just did not "get her". Refusing to believe I am someone that can not "get" Bridget, I perservered, determined to find that missing link that would catapult me into a raving reviewer. Around the middle of the book I realized that it had improved somewhat, but I had yet to have huge guffaws, loud, raucous laughter and the temptation to down a bottle of scotch and smoke a pack of fags.(In America, that could be interpreted as something different entirely.) Bridgit is fun, and I can see her in most women, but I continued to anticipate hilarity beyond belief. In the end, I was relieved for her and wished her much happiness and more laughs. I do appreciate that she thrilled so many of the readers out there. When I get that kind of response from a book, I can not help but feel ecstatic. That is why we read, to anticipate that possiblility that the next book will edge itself into that category of being so excellent one is moved to exhult it's success. I almost have to laugh at myself, for I have a "Bridget" type comment to make.. I feel nearly guilty that I do not agree with most of the customer reviewers that this was the one of the best books I have ever read. It simply was not.
Rating: Summary: Quirky, Witty and True Review: This is such a funny book. Bridget is Ally McBeal minus the neurotic self-absorption - at least a bit of it. What makes this book so ggod is that it is so real and normal. Bridget is everybody.
Rating: Summary: Bridget's Diary Review: Loved the audio version of this book. Plan on recommending this to good friends.Husband broke out in laughter while over hearing part of this book. Wonder how soon this will be a film and who will play Bridget. Can't wait.
Rating: Summary: Hilarious! A Fast, Witty Read Review: I didn't care much for it after reading the first few pages, but my friends all raved about it, so I kept reading and was not at all disappointed. I think every woman can relate to Bridget, somehow, which makes it even more enjoyable. I can't wait to start her new book.
Rating: Summary: Laugh out loud funny! Review: Once I got settled into the unusual format I sat back to really enjoy this book. I found it very funny. I laughed out loud many times. I believe that my 3 years spent in London were very important to my understanding her thoughts and finding them funny. So this makes me think that many words/parts of this book might not make sense to many here in America. I'd be cautious in recommending it to my friends as I fear they just wont get it. Not trying at all to dumb up America but there are many things she says that don't make sense in the American vocabulary/way of life. I found Bridgets existence very sad at times, made me ponder the values of a person who spends so many evenings getting drunk at the age of thirty-something. Yet the author doesn't mention this to be a real problem for her. Fielding has her counting her alcohol units when she should be counting how many AA meetings she's attended that week. I'll pick up the next book looking for more laughs and in the hopes that she is able to clean up her act.
Rating: Summary: Couldn¿t even finish book Review: This book was one of the most annoying that I have read this year. It was so annoying that I could not even finish it, and I bought it in hardcover. I am usually able to struggle through a hardback when I buy it because of the cost. This one however was just too annoying. I thought the story and its premise was refreshing when I picked it up. It was a departure in plot and presentation from the other books offered last simmer the main character was just not very likeable. Since the book was about her I found it unreadable. I do not recommend it and would not reccomend it even if it is found on the bargain table.
Rating: Summary: Amusment gives way to Disdain Review: #1 Bestseller in Britain, and it's easy to see why. This fictional diary of a 30ish single career woman in London reflects the all concerns and insecurities of her kind, in a breezy, witty, quick read that will not tax anyone in any way. Fielding's heroine's worries and dislikes are all fairly obvious, and her mistakes, while gently amusing, aren't particularly insightful. Her daily tallies of calories, alcohol units, cigarettes, lotto tickets, and so forth, are supposed to be a barometer to her inner self, which is mainly influenced by the progress of her love life. It starts off as amusing, but as the book progresses, Bridget gets more and more annoying in her self-pitying and general immaturity. I guess there are 30ish women like this in the world, but thankfully not among my friends.
Rating: Summary: Wow! Review: I wasn't expecting much, based on the excerpt that amazon provides, but I bought the book anyhow, because I'm always looking for a new genre/author to read.Let me preface my comments by saying that I don't usually laugh at books, at best you'll get me to grin. Not with this book. My neighbors must surely think I'm a lunatic, because as I'm reading along, some of the things the character does in this book are so genuine, so insane and yet something so real-life, that I can't help myself but howl with laughter. You've probably thought of doing these things yourself, or have done them, with equally disastrous results. And that's what probably struck a chord with me, and drew me into this character -- she's completely believable, even for all the crazy things she does. Another reason why I probably related to this book, and to keep in mind if you aren't in this kind of mindset, is that the story revolves around a terminally single 30-something, who's facing the prospect of aging and her single life. That's not to say other age-groups won't enjoy this book, but I think for the growing numbers of single 30-somethings out there, this book will hit home. The writing style is easy and fun to read as well, and propels you forward into the book, in eager anticipation of what mess Bridget will get herself into THIS time. In fact, the story line sort of reminds me of Sex in the City (HBO), but Bridget has more substance, and the book isn't ALL about sex! Ha! (But even the sex is really implied, rather than graphically spelled out). In any event, I highly recommend this book. Take a chance like me and buy it. You'll soon be making YOUR neighbors worry about your mental health with all the laughter! Enjoy!
Rating: Summary: V. Good Read! Review: I absolutely love this book! Thus far I have read it four times and each time find it funnier than the last. As a 29 year old singleton swimming in a sea of smug married friends, never has there ever been a character I have identified with as much as our Bridge. This is a must read for any single woman in my age bracket who needs to stop taking life too seriously.
