Rating: Summary: Funny, funny, funny! Review: This is one of my all-time favorite books! Bridget is one of the only characters that can make me laugh out loud over and over. I lend it to all my friends and no one is ever disappointed.
Rating: Summary: Lucy Ricardo meets HBO's Sex in the City Review: Good grief! My neighbors must think I'm an absolute lunatic. I laughed so hard at this novel, and its sequel, while reading late at night, that surely they must have been thinking of getting those nice men in the white coats to come take me away. Let me preface the rest of my commentary by saying that I hardly EVER laugh at books. At most you'll get me to grin. This is not the case with the wonderful, wonderful, Bridget Jones' Diary -- it actually made me laugh so hard that I had to put the book down for a second to recompose myself. It's that good. Some reviews here say that as you get to the end of the book, you want to throttle the main character because she seems so hapless, but that wasn't the case for me. I've known women like Bridget. Hell, I've BEEN Bridget from time to time. And that's why I think the book is so popular. Parts of the book will ring true to almost every woman -- at some point, you've done some foolish act that only a Bridget Jones is capable of. It's Lucy Ricardo meets HBO's Sex in the City. Bridget Jones is everywoman. There's even a little Bridget Jones in you. Give this book a try. I will guarantee it will get a grin (at the VERY least) out of you. Then don't be greedy, pass it along to a friend who could use a good laugh. P.S. The sequel is even funnier! But you have to read the first one to know the background for the second.
Rating: Summary: A Boring Diary by a Neurotic Woman Review: I'm sorry, but I don't know what all the hype is about with this book! A better title would have been 'Diary of an Alcoholic', because it's clear that Bridget seems to have some kind of a drinking problem. I didn't find this book that funny, just boring. I couldn't relate to Bridget at all--she doesn't remind me of myself or any of my friends, with her stupid weight obsessions and other neurotic qualities. I bought it expecting it to be sort of a High Fidelity for women, but it just wasn't that funny! I'm disappointed I wasted my money on this. (And embarrassed to be a woman if this is how we are.)
Rating: Summary: Laughing Out Loud Review: This book had me laughing out loud each night as I read it in bed. Maybe it is because I am a young single woman who can relate to Bridget's overall daily behavior and thoughts. The way this book is written is very witty and charming.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic! Review: It was a warm day when I started on Bridget's diary and I spent the whole day in bed, sweating buckets to get through a year of her life! Ms Jones' life brought smiles to my face and made me laugh like how I never thought I would with a book. Her frankness about her loves (Daniel) and hates (herself?) thoroughly amused me and warmed my heart. I squealed with her when she got her "ridiculous and meaningless commercial exploitation" from Daniel and mourned with her when the Blonde took over. I couldn't find any fault with this gem from Helen Fielding; the entries were just how one would write into it: informal, broken English and unfathomable slurs when one's too drunk. Bridget represents so many Singletons out there, pressurized to get attached and having to face the hankering from over-caring relatives. You don't have to be a Singleton to read it, and as it says, if you'd ever had a relationship or a mother, you'd love this piece.
Rating: Summary: Gasp out loud, choking back laughter! Review: This was one of the funniest books I have ever read! You will laugh at the smug marrieds and fall on the floor as Bridget tries to navigate through dieting, booze binges and dating. Then when the meets Mr. D'arcy, all hell breaks loose! Bridget is my favorite Singleton and I am hopeful the makers of the movie do her justice. She is the poster girl for all of the Singleton's out there who deal with Job, Crazy Family and the absolutely heinous world of "Comparison shop-dating!" You go Bridget! And as a casting note for the British Film company filming this movie, if you don't get Colin Firth to play Mr. D'arcy you should be drawn and quartered!
Rating: Summary: You can't put this down! Review: It is not possible to not want to read this entire book cover to cover in one sitting. It is absolutely hilarious, as well as including situations to which real women can relate. I took this book with me to Spain for the long plane ride over and the many train rides I would take throughout the country, and this book proved a wonderful companion. I would read it over and over again! If you're looking for real, honest, and comical fiction, Bridget Jones' Diary has it all.
Rating: Summary: I am Bridget (as many of us are) Review: V.v. good read. A book that truly does make you laugh out loud and feel good that others go through the same things that we usually only share with our closest friends. I highly recommend.
Rating: Summary: Entertaining and witty Review: Bridget Jones is funny, upbeat, and one of the truer characters I've met in a while. Her struggles and problems are honest and are what face almost any woman: single, married, or otherwise. While the humor is the definite driving factor of the novel, the underlying story - that all you need is a little spunk, self-forgiveness, and a resilient spirit - really makes the book worthwhile. I'd recommend it to anyone!
Rating: Summary: light hearted Review: When I finished the book, I sat back with a sigh and almost started to feel disappointed. I had spent two hours reading.. just this? Why did I bother? But then I realized that Bridget Jones' Diary was all it claimed to be - a lighthearted, comical, sketch of a fictional British girl's life. I was taken through her trials at work, fiascos in love and dinner parties, problems with her mother, and everyday battles with her personal vices (smoking, calories, etc). More importantly though, and the reason I was not disappointed, is that the book made me laugh out loud multiple times. The author's ability to make her reader laugh is what makes the book so popular despite the critics' not so favorable reviews. Anyone who enjoys a good giggle will get a guffaw out of this great summer read.
