Rating: Summary: Pride and Prejudice Remade Review: The plot is the same...even down to the characterization of Mark Darcy (Mr. Darcy). Funny is an understatement of the glib, anxious, dotty personality depicted here. I love Bridget, although I think she has a few issues with alcohol, cigatrettes, sex, exercise, punctuality, etc....Loved it....Chick book? YES!
Rating: Summary: BRILLIANT Review: This is a great book!!! VERY easy to read and EXTREMELY easy to identify with the main character - almost too close for comfort.
Rating: Summary: Funny as Hell Review: This was a very funny book very british I thought...If you have a teenaged daughter or are just young at heart try Angus, Thongs, and Full Frontal Snogging by Louis Rennison...quite possibly THE funniest book I have ever read. Try it!
Rating: Summary: Bridget Jones, 1990s version of Georgie Girl Review: A female colleague gave me Bridget Jones's Diary, insisting that it isn't a "girlie book" but rather a funny book even men could like. Well, she is both wrong and right. It is most definitely a book about and for women, but it is so light hearted and funny that even men can enjoy it (assuming they can get over the embarassment of being seen with such a book!).Bridget Jones is a story of one year in the life on a 30-ish, single London girl. She is constantly in panic mode, unbelievably obsessive about her weight, looks, and what people think of her. No, the story is hardly original. But Ms. Fielding takes these female stereotypes and blows them out of such hilarious proportions that, well, it's hard not to laugh with (and at) Bridget's problems. And men will find Bridget Jones generally likeable because, fortunately, the story doesn't take its "man bashing" very seriously. Being a middle-aged (American) male in London, I thought the world was looking at me when I read this "girlie" book on the Underground. But this didn't bother me in the least; it's their loss for not reading it themselves. And for those who might think my female colleague is some sort of Bridget Jones herself, guess again. The previous book she loaned me was Crime and Punishment (..fat chance Bridget would buy let alone read that!).
Rating: Summary: Hilarious! Review: Once I got used to the diary format, which annoyed the traditionalist in me, I was utterly engrossed in this book. First and foremost, this is certainly a book that more women than men will appreciate. I wouldn't dream of recommending it to my husband, but my best girlfriend, in a heartbeat! Any woman who has ever had weight woes or relationship woes will feel Bridget's pain, despite her frequent attempts to drown her sorrows in what turns out to be one too many nightcaps and she ends up paying for it somehow! The honesty of a story with someone speaking so bluntly about their shortcomings (binging, smoking, drinking, relationships) is refreshing, then reality hits when she makes excuses for her behavior in the same breath. Haven't we all done that from time to time? Through it all, the reader is sincerely rooting for Bridget to succeed in all areas, crossing fingers to hopefully see her to a triumphant end. So much fun, you'll no doubt be entertained!
Rating: Summary: Can't be beaten Review: Still streets ahead of its imitators.
Rating: Summary: pretty good Review: A friend recommended this book to me so I thought I'd try it out.I thought it would bore me to tears. But it didn't! Bridget Jones is so funny! And I really like the way she always makes an embarassing or downright awful situation, seem so funny. This book taught me to look at the lighter side of life and not take things too seriously. I've tried reading "diary" books like Adrian Mole (couldn't get past the first 15 pages) but Bridget Jones is the best so far. However I gave it 3 stars because I didn't find it that memorable, just very readable for a "diary".
Rating: Summary: A Laugh-Out-Loud Wonderful Read Review: Hillarious book! Bridget Jones makes all neurotics feel normal. I laughed out loud at Bridget's inner thoughts which I rarely ever do with a novel (especially in public). Only downfall is towards the end, the realism drops (mother's whole criminal experience) which was a little disappointing for me because I was following the whole thing as true-to-life. Overall, I highly recommend this book. Outstanding!
Rating: Summary: Modern Jane Austen With A Twist Review: Helen Fielding's "Bridget Jones' Diary" is an hilarious example of the modern 'singleton' in London, although the storyline is universal. Bridget Jones is single, and obsessed about weight, smoking, men, and life in general. We meet her friends: Jude, Shazzer, Magda, and Tom -- along with their significant and not-so-significant others, including "Vile" Richard and Daniel Cleaver, with whom Bridget flirts and sleeps with obsessively and compulsively. To top off the list of characters, the dominant force in Bridget's life is her mother, who not only lives in her own little world, but drags her unwilling husband and daughter with her. In between Bridget's trysts and trials, such elements as television, literature, May-December romances, 'Smug Marrieds', and trendy fashions and bars are skewered in the 'diary' Bridget keeps. The end is satisfying and throughout are constant references to the "Pride and Prejudice" miniseries with Colin Firth, another obsession of Bridget and her friends. This strange homage to Jane Austen is encapsulated by Bridget's own "Mr. Darcy" with whom her parents attempt to fix her up. The quick pace and witty dialogue will leave you begging for more; a great read.
Rating: Summary: amusing Review: I found this a very amusing comic novel. Bridget Jones strikes a chord with every 20-something woman I know in England and the US. I'm not at all sure why this novel provoked such outrage, or why it has been interpreted to be anti-feminist...it is what it is, a rather silly book which is great fun to read.
