Rating: Summary: Writing-by-numbers Review: Oh I wanted to like this. I'm usually a fan of diary-type novels but this was dire. The saddest part of the whole Bridget Jones lore is the fact that the book was so successful. So many women screaming with laughter thinking this novel mirrors their life when, if it really does, then it isn't really a lot to laugh about.Fielding lays out a fairly bog-standard plot. Bridget is a loser, then a man enters her life and she is a winner. The man leaves and she is a loser again. Been done before, been done better. In addition, Fielding rips off an earlier 'diary' novel for the whole fancy dress/not fancy dress party plotline (Diary of a Somebody by Christopher Matthew, written in the late 1970's and obviously quite a popular read with Fielding).
Rating: Summary: A Fun Read Review: This book is a much-needed breath of fresh air. It is not profound or particularly intellectual but it is a fun book that most people will enjoy. After I started reading this book, I was hooked and couldn't do anything but read. I was late to classes, I didn't study for my tests, and I was a hermit in my room. This book is so addicting that your life will have to be on hold until you finish it. I highly recommend reading this book.
Rating: Summary: loved it! Review: I am not a 30 something, but I loved this book. I read it in two days, and it's one of those novels that leave a smile on your face, instead of keeping you up in a sleepless, "hmmmmm". I would recommend this book to anyone who is tired of all the drama out there. Escape for a couple of hours, it won't kill you! There is a Bridget within all of us. It will wake you up to the fact that we are all too hard on ourselves.
Rating: Summary: Bridget Jones's diary - "A hilarious good read" Review: Bridget Jones's Diary by Helen Fielding Bridget Jones is a Thirty something rambling Singleton who smokes like a chimney and drinks like a fish. The book takes us through one year Jones of her life where she encounters many awkward situations and two men who end up fighting for her. She goes through issues like her parents separating, being stuck in a dead end job and being an over weight singleton! The main characters in this book are Bridget who manages throughout to get her self into unfortunately embarrassing situations. Another is Marc Darcy a pompous rich highly successful lawyer who ends up being the love of her life. Daniel Cleaver the fairytale romance and a perfect boyfriend, or maybe not he two-times Bridget leaving her depressed and single again. And what would a girl in the middle of a metropolis be without her friends? Bridget has her unique set of them. There is Tom her gay best friend what more is there to say. Shazzer a ranting feminist who thinks all men are pigs. And Jude a high-powered career woman who has an evil boyfriend. Lets not forget Magda and Jeremy when put together with other smug married couples can be unbearable. As you have probably guessed the book is written in the form as a diary. I think this technique was very effective and amusing. I think you get to learn about the little things in her life. At the start of each entry she writes who many cigarettes she has smoked, how many alcohol units she has drunk, how many calories she has eaten and her weight. Although these points do not contribute to the main story it is interesting to see how her weight varies throughout the year!! However some people who have read the book find the form as a diary quite boring. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this a book and once I had started could not put it down. I enjoyed the form of a diary because it made it really interesting. Apart from dealing with the usual problems (boyfriends, career, parent's separation) it deals with unusual situations like her mother becoming a television host. Also when she goes to a tarts and vicars party in a bunny costume and finds out that it is been cancelled. There are horrifying embarrassing situations in which we cannot help but laugh. When I read this book I had high hopes after seeing the film. I can tell you I was not disappointed and I recommend it as a hilarious good read!

Helen Fielding uses very effective ways of writing this story such as comical moments, she also explains what is going on in Bridget's mind and the way the book is set out like a diary which helps us understand how Bridget is feeling. The book is very comical because of Bridget character because she always manages to embarrass her self, which also makes the reader fell sorry for her, which make the reader more involved in the book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and I think any one who is in the same situation, as Bridget will relate to this book and will fully enjoy it as well. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did.

This being a success being able to know Bridget's feelings and personal thoughts on her dramatic days and months, and all that is happening in her eventful life. I enjoyed the book as it was a light, non serious read which had comic moments, and it was nice 2 laugh at someone else's life rather than my own for a change! . It made me laugh aloud as I was reading the delightful dilemmas of Bridget's life. Whether you love it, hate it or end up just undecided, I feel the book is a great read, and I would recommend it to anyone.
Rating: Summary: 20th Century Neuroses Review: Bridget Jones is your typical 30-something single woman in any large city around the world. At least that's what Helen Fielding would like us to believe. The truth is Bridget Jones is certainly an atypical 30-something single female from a "comfortable" background with a good job, in publishing as it happens, and all the attendant middle-class hangups about her physical size and what people think about her. If you are not part of this "clique" and you just know that she went to a public school and not the local comprehensive, then this book may well leave you cold. The only bits that will ring true are the getting righteiusly plastered with girlfriends whilst setting the world to rights and bemoaning all men as having far too much "emotional f***wittage". Frankly this book fitted a time and a place that just doesn't exist any more for most of the world's population. It passes a rainy afternoon but that is about all that can be said for it.
Rating: Summary: Witty Review: I figured I'd better go ahead and write my review of this book since I'm about to pick up the sequel to it. I loved this book. This is the book that started it all. Since Bridget Jones's Diary swept the globe, many writers have tried to "borrow" the premise, but nothing compares to the book that started it all. I read the UK edition, so I was thrown off a little by the weight thing (which is in stones in the UK edition), but I got that all cleared out. Bridget Jones is a 30-something, single woman who's hoping to make a change in her life. She wants to smoke less, lose weight, and find the man of her dreams. She chronicles these hopes in her journal, and the result is hilarious. This book is just a bit of light reading, and anyone woman, regardless of age or nationality, can relate to many of Bridget's age. Bridget is funny, smart, and cheeky. She has a complicated relationship with her mother, and she has a complicated relationship with men. She gives her friends advice that she doesn't take herself, regrets not saying what's really on her mind, and cooks horribly. She's easy to relate to, and she's real. I will admit that there was a part near the ending, the scene where her mother got in trouble, that seemed a little farfetched, but it can be a overlooked. There isn't much more to say about this book except it's fast paced and amusing. And now, I can't wait to get started on the second book.
Rating: Summary: classic Review: "Bridget Jones's Diary" was the beginning of a small revolution in women's literature. It is the book that has begat dozens - if not hundreds - of other books as well as entire publishing labels. They are modeled after it in style (self-deprecation and self-defeating behaviour) as well as plot (aging single girl in the big city seeks love against parental, employment, and self-induced obstacles). But none of them are quite as good! Bridget's story has a distinctive tone comprised of an epistolary style, obsessive counting behavior (calories, cigarettes, alcohol units, calls to the British equivalent of *-69), and an unsual diction that makes it a highly entertaining read. And Fielding has mastered the trick of romantic comedy - making the heroine so flawed and winning that we're rooting for her to find love at all costs no matter how much we believe she should be complete without it. Most first-time readers of "Bridget Jones's Diary" will have seen the movie already. This shouldn't hinder their enjoyment of the book; the two are more complementary than identical. The book misses the movie's sheer narrative neatness and obvious resemblance to Austen's "Pride and Prejudice". However, it's much more complex (the filmmakers altered the plot a great deal) and far more humorous.
Rating: Summary: Hilarious, cynical and smart Review: I don't believe that this book needs to be introduced. It is, of course, the witty, comic and bestselling confessions of a single, working woman, Bridget Jones, Helen Fielding's goldmine creation. It is also an entertaining, stylish and very amusing view of modern society, featuring a delicious cast of characters and Helen Fielding's cynical and irresistible writing style. The diary format of the book makes it fast-paced, and I read both the books in one night each. Every moment is enjoyable, and I was holding my stomach with laughter during most of it. Bridget Jones is bloody brilliant, if you want to kill yourself laughing and relate to the character's experiences, or simply read a book that refuses to be put down this one's for you!
