Summary: Totally enjoyable light fare
Review: I loved this book although it was less Elizabeth Bennet (Pride and Prejudice) and more Holly Golightly (Breakfast at Tiffany's). What women in her mid-20's to early 30's wouldn't want to tell the world to mind it's own business when it comes to career and love? And what woman wouldn't want to fall in love with Mark Darcy/Mr. Darcy/Colin Firth while still maintaining a certain level of independence and fun?While I think the heavy drinking and smoking may allude to a more serious problem (next book possibly "Bridget Jones and the Twelve Steps"?) I laughed all the way through this book and the sequel. Bridget definitely gets to have her cake and eat it too. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a quick and funny read. While not great literature, this book is one I will read again for a quick laugh. While I recommend this book, don't expect to see too much of it in the movie. I saw the movie several months before reading this book and see little resemblance between Bridget's life as it unfolds and the overall plot of the film. In retrospect, more of her madcap moments could have been included in the film. Mark Darcy is also not developed as the romantic interest in the film as much as in the book.

Summary: A titter here and there, but certainly nothing to rave about
Review: To begin with, I first have to admit that I only read BJD as somewhat of an introduction to Bridget Jones's life, and the intentions of the author in terms of plot, characters' traits etc., in the advent that I decided to watch the movie (the movie is very good! watch the movie everyone!) Being aware of the worldwide "acclaim" for this novel, I had fairly high expectations for the book. Although, gladly the book did not dissappoint, unfortunately it didn't dazzle me either. BJD was not the barrel-full of laughs I had hoped for, but however, did produce a little titter here and there. I would say that this book is worth the read, but would have a limited re-read life, and probably *not* worth buying. - Unless on sale (the Bridget Jones in me speaking) hahaha. So by all means borrow it from the library for the perfect 'beach read', but I personally wouldn't buy it (at full price anyway!)

Summary: A slice of life
Review: I read this book because I had seen the movie and wondered what all the fuss was about. The movie was a little witty, a bit overdramatic and a mostly unrealistic love story. So, how could the book have been so hailed? Well, quite simply, the book isn't the movie at all. Sure, there is some similarity at length, but please don't think that the over-dramatic american love story "Bridget Jones's Diary" is anything like the book. In the book, Bridget is a all to common woman who constantly struggles between all too delicious chocolate and the almighty pound. Her struggle, and life, is an all to familiar one for most non-underwear model women. She constantly seeks Mr. Right, only to always end up with Mr. Wrong. And all the while Mr. Right lies hidden in a hideous "grandma knit" sweater. The book, is all to realistic. It's not a complete sappy love story, although the end is rather sweet. And it's not a "life sucks" diatribe, because all in all she finds that she's not so bad off. The sugar sweet balances out the bitter defeats enough to make Bridget so damn endearing. You feel for her and you cheer for her because she's not the everyday unrealistic image of a woman that is thrust into our eyes. She's charmingly real and you can't help but like her. The book, at least, a good read and at best, incredably entertaining. Just one bit of advice, read the book and skip the movie.

Review: Perhaps the only book I've read funnier than this is the Bridget Jones sequel! No-one can tell a story better than Helen Fielding's Bridget Jones! I really do wish there could be a way to get a third story out of her. She's a great read. Everyone loves her. If you need a friend, it's Bridget.

Summary: Hilarious and true.
Review: Okay, another book that absolutely cracked me up. There is nothing better than a good belly laugh and a peek at the interior life of a person from a culture other than my own. Bridget Jones is honest, silly, smart, not particularly confident, fun, and interesting. She's worth the read if you have ever been single and not happy about it, or if you're single and smart enough to enjoy it! Definitely worth the read for anyone. Loved it.

Summary: BLAH -- Too Much Hype.
Review: I found the book to be v. dull. There were many references to places and customs in London that unless you have been there, many wouldn't know what the author was referring to. This book was definitely overhyped! I kept reading hoping it would get better, but unfortunately it turned out to be just wasted time.

Summary: Wouldn't put it on my "must read" list
Review: I picked up this book in preparation to see the movie. I'm hoping the movie is better than the book as some other reviewers have said, because I was pretty much underwhelmed. It's cute and amusing but never makes it out of the "in-flight reading material" class in my estimation. Maybe I just didn't get it but maybe there's nothing to get. An okay book if you have a block of time to fill find the social mores of thirty-something singletons amusing. I just felt like I wasted my time with this one.

Review: Why do so many people love this book?? I just don't get it! I' m not sinlge, and I've never been into counting calories, but I don't think I would have appreciated it even if I didn't have those "disadvantages". The only reason I finished it is because it's coming up in my book club now with the film and everything. If it wasn't for that, no way. It's no fun, it's boring, it lacks uplifting qualities like beautiful language or vivid characters or interesting plot. If you want to read about relationships, pick something else. Anything else. Please!

Review: I found this book really funny and a great, easy read. Mostly wanted to read it before the movie came out and am very glad I did. Bridget finds the right guy (though I wish there had been more time spent on him!). She is everygirl! Light and enjoyable.
