Rating: Summary: This is supposed to be good? Review: I was so disappointed by this book. I kept hearing great things about it, but I couldn't even finish it. I got about 2/3 of the way through it and I couldn't take the torture anymore. Don't waste your time.
Rating: Summary: Cheesy, contrived drivel! Review: I, too, was conned into reading this by well-meaning friends who declared it to be wonderful and funny. I won't be taking their literary advice again! I don't often despise books, but this one is horrible. It's sappy and contrived, and far too poorly written to qualify as a guilty pleasure. The characters are one dimensional and unoriginal, the flashbacks are tedious and heavy-handed, yet still fare better than the awkward attempt at a framing story in the relationship between Sidda and her sickening, plastic-molded boyfriend. I don't want to spoil the girl power/woman love thing surrounding this book, but I don't understand what the fuss is about. Try "Who Will Run the Frog Hospital" by Lorrie Moore, or "Sarah Phillips" by Andrea Lee, or ANYTHING - just leave this one alone.
Rating: Summary: A huge disappointment Review: I can't believe how many people liked this book. It read like a made-for-TV movie. The dialogue was completely unbelievable (people just don't talk like that!), the plot contrived. It's too bad, because the premise of the book - a damaged family relationship and the exploration of female friendships - had a lot of potential, but fell totally flat. It was almost frustrating that it was so poorly done.
Rating: Summary: A great book for all women! Review: This book was recommended to me by a friend, and I really enjoyed it. Although the start was a little slow, by the middle and end of the book, I wished that it would never end. This is one of those books that I could just go on reading forever, just to keep up with all of the characters. This book is an great story of everlasting friendship, love, and relationships. Perfect to read during the summer- every woman will love this!
Rating: Summary: Potentially good plot & characters; poor execution Review: If the Ya-Ya story were told from the beginning instead of jumping back and forth to Sidda and that contrived scrapbook thing, I might have been drawn in. One or two Ya-Ya episodes did move me and I wanted them to continue, but they were over too soon. I'm not worried about the alcohol and "abuse", all kinds of people and situations have occured over time and can be explored for depth and meaning. This book never really clicked because of the TV-style writing and contrived present-day situation.
Rating: Summary: Ya-Ya is a book that has awankened me to my mother's love. Review: I am going on a vaction with five dear friends. Ya-Ya Sisterhood is our "required reading." I suggested this book as a great read because it is the most thought inspiring, delightful book I have read this year (being an English/Literature teacher, I read a lot of books). I have discovered that trying to pinpoint why this particular story has touched me so deeply is not an easy task. Is it the characters? Vivi, Necie, Teensy, Caro, Sidalee - great names, diverse and fascinating! Is it the theme? A deep and secret bond truly exists between mothers and daughters. Maybe I'm overly setimental about the emtions envoked in this area because I'm mourning my own mom's death and wishing I had known her more deeply, loved her and appreciated her better. Is it the humor? "Underneath my Givenchy, I was wearing only my bra and panties. Who would have known the difference? I had my chapel veil on." You Catholic school girls of the '50s and "60s can appreciate this bit of humor. Is it the author's view of life? "Let me see my daughter like my mother could never see me. Let her see me, too" I believe that all these things, as well as the wonderful Louisiana lore and flavor, have pulled me into this novel. Being a Louisiana girl makes the appeal even greater. My final thought - Who am I most like? Vivi, Caro, Necie, Teensy, a little smathering of each, I hope.... I know that you and my five friends will ask the same question after you have explored the "divine secrets of the Ya-Yas."

Rating: Summary: here's a grip - get it Review: My sister sent me this book, saying it was un-put downable. Fine. I read it - and have wondered why I did so. Shallow, predictable characters, who have no, repeat NO toehold in real life. I rather think that we are supposed to identify with either Siddalee or Vivi, or view one of them as our sister/mother. Hmmph. I can identify well with women who have never had to work outside the home, who have no money worries, and were sent to film premieres; I know several women who can leave their high-end jobs in the theatre to go to an island and think about their lives. Drivel - possibly well-intentioned, possibly cathartic to Wells, but drivel nonetheless.
Rating: Summary: This book makes you want to be a Ya-Ya! Review: I laughed and read and shared this HYSTERICALLY FUNNY book with my Mother, sisters, girlfriends and tennis buddies! Rebecca Wells makes kid stuff, friend stuff, and life stuff ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLY entertaining! I'm now reading LITTLE ALTARS EVERYWHERE and it is just as FUN and WONDERFUL!
Rating: Summary: A great book that hits home in more ways than one. Review: I had a hard time putting the Ya-Ya Sisterhood down, as if it were the Divine Secrets scrapbook. I have 3 best friends in life and we feel our friendship is unique and everlasting, throught thick and thin, it felt good to see the same in this book.
