Summary: I felt like I stepped back in time.
Review: I cried and cried mostly because this book brought back memories (better left repressed)and dragged up old scars. Never before has a writer made me feel THAT emotional. I kept reading it feeling as though I was reading my autobiography. Being a southerner has nothing to do with it as my mother and I are born and bred die hard New Yorkers! For me it was realism and if anyone thinks this was contrived, she had better wake up! I'm only giving it 3 stars BECAUSE the memories evoked were too sad for me to recommend it; however, the writing is definitely superior to much I've read recently.

Summary: Completely enjoyable from beginning to end.
Review: This book made me laugh out loud and cry real tears. You can almost taste the flavor of Louisiana, and it tastes good.

Summary: Brilliant Observations
Review: Loved it, loved it, loved it. I loved page 258 of "Divine Secrets": "She thought of the tall, stately black woman who had fed her, dressed her, hand washed her delicates, played with her, sung to her, and listened to her with tenderness."

It's even better than a favorite passage from another fave, from "Of Woman Born" by Adrienne Rich. On page 254 it reads: "My Black mother . . . fed me, dressed me, played with me, watched over me, sang to me, cared for me tenderly and intimately."

Summary: I'm sending this to my mom!
Review: This book is incredible! I only wish that the northern reviewers could get as much out of it as us Southern Belles seem to take away. Every girl that I have mentioned it to has either read it or wants to. I have cried and I have laughed. I was nearly rolling on the floor as Teensy was being disqualified from the look-alike contest. And I was sobbing when Vivi lost Jack. I'm underlining key passages and will send it to my mom when I'm done. She and I have a pretty rough relationship, and picturing her through Vivi's eyes seems to somehow make sense. This book has helped me become a little more tolerant, a little more hopeful that my relationship with my mother will work itself out if we're both willing to sit down with our tall glasses of lemonade on the side porch one lazy afternoon and let all our troubles slip into the bayou. Thank you for the excellent read.

Summary: THIS BOOK WILL MAKE YOU SEE YOUR MOM AS A REAL PERSON
Review: I read this book in 2 days. I've never been so affected by a book. I wanted to actually step into the pages and be apart of the characters lives. Each sentence brought you closer to these people. Every character had such a unique sense of humor and distinct personality. You couldn't help but love each one, regardless of their obvious disfunction. You will laugh and, no matter how hard you try not to, you will cry. No person that reads this book could ever forget this family.

Summary: A Literary Disgrace
Review: This, too, shall pass.

Thank God.

Summary: Don't believe the hype
Review: If you want to read a good book set in the south read Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. If you want to read a good "Women's" book read The Bridget Jones Diary. Under no circumstances would I ever recommend this southern fried fluff. It is cheesy fiction in the disguise of literature. I am so shocked to see Ya-Ya frequently named as one of the best books of the year! The characters and story are so predictable I could hardly stand it. Plus it is extremely boring! I guess I should have seen the red flags flying when I heard they were making Divine Secrets into a movie with Bette Midler and Goldie Hawn. This book was a tremendous disappointment. Too bad Amazon doesn't offer a "zero star" option.

Summary: Every woman should read this book.
Review: This book made me laugh and cry all at the same time. I couldn't put it down. I finished it the day after I bought it. I began to realize that I have the same fears that Sidda does. Everyone woman should read this book.

Summary: Biggest piece of dreck I've ever read
Review: NO STARS!!! Someone owes ME a star for reading this book. Who is responsible for publishing this? The nicest thing I can say about it is that I found no spelling errors. The only explanation I can come up with to explain the popularity of "Ya-Ya" is that readers are blissfully oblivious to how much of their own emotion they are projecting onto (or into?) this microscopically thin story. I wish I could sue someone to get the time back I wasted reading this.

Summary: It was absolutely wonderful!
Review: I have never loved a book more than I love this one. I recommend it to all women. It made me feel like my life wasn't as messed up as I always believed it to be.
