Rating: Summary: Ya Ya!!! A story of bonding Review: I enjoyed this book so much and would love to read more about the irrepressible Ya Yas. Wells captures the essense several different eras with dexterity. She also creates a wonderful gang of characters with whom I feel as if I sat down to a tray of iced teas and pecan tarts. My favorite parts dealt with the adventures of this close group of women. I loved seeing the YaYas grow. Some of their antics were laugh out loud funny- skinny dipping, others capture turmoil in America- racial issues at the premier of Gone with the Wind. I definately preffered the scenese from the past to the modern day ones. Vivi's daughter, Siddalee, just lacked the interest and spark of the older ladies. It is not always easy to follow a book that is not written chronologically, but Wells allows us to draw conclusions and read between the lines. The reader is always left wanting more.... This great novel is truly a celebration of female bonding and friendship!
Rating: Summary: Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood Review: Once I got involved with the characters, I couldn't put the book down. My only hope is that the movie can capture the essence of this lively group of women in the same way the book did. Every woman should be so lucky as to have "sisters" like these!
Rating: Summary: Simply Divine... Review: Two words that sum up this marvelous work of literature by Rebecca Wells: simply divine. I read this book on an airplane simply to pass the time, and found myself engrossed in a charming, quirky, and delightful romp of four of the most richly drawn women I have met in literature in a long time. Wells manages to capture the incorrigible spirit of each of the "Ya-Ya's" and their dynamics are wonderful. Their complex, supportive group is a real entity, as real as the characters that created it. The most rich character of the bunch is Vivi, whom you both love and fear. She is a tornado in the Louisana swamps, and her antithesis is her much-confused daughter Sidda. It's Sidda and Vivi's relationship that lies at the heart of this book. Through Vivi's life, Sidda learns and relearns some important lessons in life that allow her to continue forward. By looking back, it helps sets her future. What could have been merely a fun romp turns out to be dripping with personal nuggets of honesty. With each turn of the page, you laugh, you cry, you contemplate. Divine Secrets is surprisingly full of divine secrets, and discovering them is half the fun. Take it from a guy who loved this book: don't delay, put this book on your summer reading list, and then enjoy the movie.
Rating: Summary: For the woman at heart Review: This book is a great story about female friendship and motherly love and the possible problems that may arise in both. I have a very strong relationship with my mother and few female friends, which is mostly the opposite setting of the main character of this book. Regardless, I found myself relating to many of the characters and living their lives. It is a very touching book filled with a wide range of emotions - it made me cry, a rare occasion for me while reading books. I recommend this to anyone interested in getting in touch with her feminine side. It'll make you appreciate all the women in your lives that much more.
Rating: Summary: Appalling Review: If the characters in this book typify the American south, I'm moving to the Yukon. But I know that can't be right! Surely not all southern mamas are self-absorbed, bipolar dipsomaniacs. And surely we shouldn't have to read about the few that are and - worse yet - be expected to glorify them. I'm a huge fan of black humor, but child abuse written about in this way gives me chills. I'm with the writer/reviewer who was moved to throw the book across the room at one point. Wells had a good thing going with the prequel, Little Altars Everywhere. She should have left it at that.
Rating: Summary: One of my all-time favorites Review: I loved this book for two reasons: I have great friends and had a bad childhood too. Anyone with a dysfunctional family knows what a livesaver good friends can be. I also love how it all started with a fight between Sidda and her mom, Vivi. At age 40 Sidda is perplexed by the behavior of her mom, and Vivi's friends the ya-ya's sweep in to fix things. So they lend Sidda the scrap book they call "the divine secrets of the ya-ya sisterhood." The book flashes back to Vivi's childhood and adolesence with snippets of wild antics and emotional, life-altering events. The ya-ya's flout anything prim and proper and I laughed out loud at their stunts. Some people may not like the whole "female bonding" theme, but I loved this book.

Rating: Summary: Wonderful! Review: Another disfunctional southern family but one of the most engaging since GWTW! Hilarious and sad, brought back many feelings from my own childhood. Am wishing Ms. Wells could write more--but only if they would be as good as Ya-Ya and Little Altars.
