Rating: Summary: Excellent - better than her first Review: I admit I bought Good in Bed (Weiner's first book) because of the title. Seriously, who didn't? :) But, I really enjoyed the book and was pleased to see her second book on the shelves. In Her Shoes tops Good in Bed. I read it over one weekend and had trouble putting it down. I found the characters compelling. I found myself really relating to Rose (I'm also a 30-something attorney) in her insecurities and her relationship with her family. Ms. Weiner has created excellent characters and teaches a few lessons about family and belief in yourself without preaching or therapy. EXCELLENT!
Rating: Summary: a great follow-up from Weiner Review: I really liked "In Her Shoes", and I think most women who have at least one sister will be able to relate to the roles family members and teachers either consciously or inadvertently assign them. In the case of Rose and Maggie Feller, they accept their roles of practical and frumpy (Rose) and flighty, sexy and dumb (Maggie) and it wreaks havoc on their lives and relationships with men and each other.Rose, age 30, sees Maggie, age 28, as constantly needing help, bailing out, and indeed she does. Maggie is immature, greedy, and selfish, believing the world owes her because at some point in adolescence, simply being pretty is not enough. Maggie, who has always banked on being pretty, is angry about this and perceives hardworking attorney Rose to have everything the world apparently once promised her. Rose rarely has boyfriends and accepts she is just not pretty, but at least she can have fabulous shoes (which Maggie always steals, along with her money, car and a guy she really likes). The girls' mother died when they were very young and they have "Sydelle the Stepmonster" now. There is a parallel story of Ella, their long-estranged grandmother, and as the story plays out, the reason for their estrangement and the role their mother played with them becomes more evident. There is transformation to set each of the sisters' lives on track so they can at last be happy, but none of it is cut-and-dried or straightforward. That is the main reason I liked it -- you never knew what was going to happen next, and much of it will surprise you.
Rating: Summary: Love it alot! Review: I have to admit that I let "In Her Shoes" sit on my bookshelf for a while, before I got around to reading it. After just finishing it up, I so sorry that I let this happen! "In Her Shoes" is a great book that tells the story about the relationship between sister that are totally different. Readers of Ms. Weiner first book will be happy to know that we get to see what Cannie has been up too. This is a really great book that should not be missed.
Rating: Summary: dry and predictable literature Review: Ms. Weiner is an excellent writer. That's why it's a shame that she wasted her talent by writing this ultra-conservative, mediocre novel that reads more like a screenplay for a made-for-tv movie rather than a thoughtful, original book (actually, I could very easily see this book becoming just that, and maybe that's what the author was aiming for). The main characters are poorly developed, stereotypical and one-dimensional, and the book does not succeed in engaging the reader. You don't wind up caring much about what happens to the characters by the end of the novel, and you can easily guess the ending before reading too far. And what's up with the way that the author handles the protagonist Maggie? From the first scene to the last, Ms. Weiner seems more interested in humiliating her than anything else. I'm really surprised that the editorial reviews for this lackluster book were so positive. If you are curious to read it, at least wait for the paperbook version to be released, or, better yet, borrow it from a friend.
Rating: Summary: Still Hilarious... Review: Jennifer Weiner has done it again. Although this one is not as good as Good in Bed it is still a wonderful laugh out loud book that makes you feel wonderful at the end. It is especially good for people who have sisters, or have a Bipolar person in their life. As someone who has both of those this book hit home, and I loved it very much.
Rating: Summary: Jennifer Weiner for president! Review: This author is amazing! She has a way of making you feel as though you are in her book standing right next to her characters as they go through the journey of life. I was especially happy to see Joy and Nifkin and Cannie make brief appearances:) I love the sisterly banter between Maggie and Rose as well as the love that they have for each other that only seems to come out when times are rough:) It is a great book and I definitely recommend it to anyone who loved Jennifer Weiner's first one!
Rating: Summary: A fantastic, funny read! Review: "In Her Shoes" is a wonderful, funny and charming book. I loved Weiner's first book, "Good in Bed" and was worried that the second book might not measure up. It did measure up, with laughs to spare. "Shoes" offered lots of fun twists, including a cameo appearance by Cannie from "Bed." Weiner is witty and charming, and I couldn't stop laughing or crying through the entire book -- sometimes simultaneously. This is my favorite book this year!
Rating: Summary: Blech Review: Good in Bed was so good. This one stinks.
Rating: Summary: Another win for Jennifer Weiner Review: I thoroughly enjoyed In Her Shoes as much as Good In Bed. More wonderfully sweet and funny characters you will fall in love with.
Rating: Summary: Try it- You might like it Review: I read the first review on this page and decided to get the book anyway. I had read Good in Bed on a recent vacation after I picked it up with some other books on a whim. Never heard of Weiner or the book, and I loved them both. It was one of those great books--you know, the kind where when you finish, you don't want to let go of the characters. So, I heard that In Her Shoes was something of a sequel, so I rushed out and bought it. While I was disappointed that I didn't have much of an opportunity to learn more about Cannie, Joy and Nifkin, I was so distracted by my interest in Rose and Maggie that I hardly remembered why I bought the book in the first place. Weiner does such a great job of writing about human, likeable characters that I was completely caught up in their lives. As quickly as I read the book, and as anxious as I was to see how it all turned out, I dreaded turning the final page because I didn't want to let go of these characters either. To me, that is how I judge a good book. If the characters show up in my dreams or if I just find myself wondering about what happened to them weeks after I finished the book, then it is a winner on my list. Good job Weiner! Can't wait for the next one...
