Rating: Summary: Entertaining Read Review: If you're like me, all of these books about the twenty or thirty something independent woman with major character flaws written in a humorous, caustic tone appeal to you greatly. This one is no exception. I do have to agree with some of my fellow reviewers that this book definitely falls flat at the end. I felt like it was a very rushed ending. The book kept me interested until the last chapter, I read it and was like, "Oh. That's it? Okay, I guess." It's worth your time to read the book anyway just for the entertainment and the way that just about everyone can relate to a character in this story.
Rating: Summary: Very touching Review: An intelligent yet moving novel about two very different women who are sisters. This the first book I've read by Jennifer Weiner and now I am an avid fan. I will continue to read more of her books!!
Rating: Summary: Body Image Review: Jennifer, in both of her books, has a great way of addressing body image issues with young women in today's America. I look forward to her next book!
Rating: Summary: Amazing Read Review: I was amazed to see bad reviews for this book. Like "Good In Bed", "In Her Shoes" is a slice of life novel. Like Life, this book does not fall into one genre. It's funny, sad, sweet, hard, mean, courageous, and too many more to name. A wonderful book. I had moments of Laughing out Loud, to gasping, and even crying. The one reviewer, labled bitter weiner, gave an awful review. I still am amazed at the absurd reasons, and embellished criticisms. Come on people, these reviews are to say it was great, wonderful, ok, odd, weird or bad. Not to go off on some tangent that no one (and trust me on this) can agree with BECAUSE everyone is different. I loved it. Someone else might hate it. But to tear it down? Thats insane. I fully recommend this book and Good in Bed. Great Read. Great Writer.
Rating: Summary: Funny- for two chapters! Review: In Her Shoes By Jennifer Weiner.Starting as a rip-roaring funny story the first two chapters lead the reader to believe that the laugh will just keep on coming. It is not until you get comfortable with the idea of a good hilarious read that the story turns serious. But that doesn't distract from the enjoyment of the book. Telling the story of how two sisters come out of a difficult childhood it is easy to swing in favour of one sister to the other as their lives shoot off in to different directions. Funny, melancholic and thought provoking In Her Shoes is probably more suited to a female audience. You can almost picture Rene Zellwegger strutting her stuff in one of the leading roles as the story progresses to an unpredictable end.
Rating: Summary: A letdown after Good in Bed Review: I loved Good in Bed and eagerly looked forward to the publication of Weiner's second novel, but found this book was a huge letdown. The characters were neurotic and annoying and the plot was just plain disturbing. Yuck!
Rating: Summary: A fun read Review: This book is definitely a fun weekend read. I love how Weiner creates strong characters who you can easily identify with or loathe. I honestly hated Maggie for the first half of the book... it was to the point I was disgusted with her behavior! But then Weiner cleverly creates a way for each character - with all their flaws and 'issues' - to warm your heart. I'd give this book 5 stars, but Maggie brought back too many painful memories of my nerdy high school days when I envied the 'popular' girls who breezed through life with a flash of their boobs! haha!
Rating: Summary: Thoroughly Enjoyed...... Review: It seems as though the opinions are greatly varied on this book - to put it mildly. I received this as a present and couldnt put the book down - it was a great, easy read - which to me are the best kind and most enjoyable. I would have to agree with the one reviewer that Maggie's character turned a little too fast and too easy. And maybe it was a bit far-fetched but I would have loved to gone deeper and longer into Maggie's "hiding out" at the university. After reading this I immediately got Good in Bed, which I also enjoyed. The only trouble was after having read both back-to-back I have trouble separating Cannie from Rose. But I would definitely recommend them both - great vacation/beach books.
Rating: Summary: Highs and lows again Review: Jennifer Weiner has a problem- she can't decide if she wants to write comedy or tragedy. Her latest family drama is wrought with family issues, self- esteem problems and emotional bridges that 2 generations of women are trying to cross. The main characters in the books the two sisters are so jealous and bitter and unkind to each other I had a tough time stomaching the scenes where the two interacted. I liked the aspect of personal growth we saw from the younger sister once she reconnected with their long missing grandmother in Florida. I actually liked the grandmother better than her two self-centered granddaughters. Their emotionally absent father and the evil stepmother were caricatures not true characters. Much like Good in Bed Ms Weiner seems to think any woman over a size 12 is as big as a house which I find distracting- I work on the east coast where winter clothes cover you half the time- and the average woman is a 12+ and it is not a big deal. Can she please quit writing frumpy fat thin girls? This is as annoying as the "pretty ugly girls" theme in teen movies. I will pass on her future efforts until such time that her main characters show the maturity and growth the minor ones do.
Rating: Summary: Excellent, worth reading Review: Scary that the first review listed on this page is so negative! Don't be scared off, this is a wonderful book. Its light, cheery, entertaining. Don't expect the deepest of the deep, but certainly the characters are well developed, story is excellent. The only reason I reserve 1 star is that maggie's character changed to fast - I felt the last 1/3 rd of the book was too rushed. Would've liked to seen maggie's progression in a bit more detail. Would've also like to had more pages in the 3rd half about ella. enough negativity , read the book!
