Rating: Summary: It was not as good as I everyone said it was. Review: I read the book because I had just finished another one of Campbells book and wanted to study her writing style. This book to me seemed very diffrent from "Your Blues aint Like Mine". It was not as good as the first book. Though still interesting it could not hold my attention exspeically chapter four where nothing much happens.
Rating: Summary: A MUST READ! Review: I regret it took me so long to finally read this book, as it has been out for some time. The author is nearly a master when it comes to keeping the reader's attention. I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN! Brothers and Sisters is a national African american treasure! When all the smoke clears, we are still able to overcome whatever obstacles are put in front of us and still triumph. Yes, this is a story of a female bank representative who happens to be African-American who forges an unlikely relationship with a white female co-worker. It is interesting to see how the author writes about their relationship. I commend the author for not being explicit in the sexual encounters these characters experienced. It was also interesting how she got in the head of white male bosses and explored their racial/sexual predudices. I love how in the end all the black characters who were fired for one reason or another we vendicated and accepted by an African-american bank established by an African-American church. The authors shows us we can make it together no matter what our strengths or weaknesses. That is why we are Brothers and Sisters. I also like the relationship between Esther the black female bank rep and the mail delivery person, Tyrone. He was a good brother who just adored Esther and I found that refreshing. I will read it again.
Rating: Summary: Modern Day Morality Play Review: If this novel is any indication of Bebe Moore Campbell's talent, I think she's bound for an exciting and prolific career. Set in L.A. in the aftermath of the infamous Rodney King verdict, BROTHERS AND SISTERS introduces the reader to a banking world filled with interesting and complex characters both Black and White. Campbell has an excellent ability to traverse modern day racial complexities in a manner which is neither unrealistic nor condescending. Any Black female professional is bound to identify with the struggles and situations that Ester faces in the book: trust issues with White co-workers, dating a blue-collar man, walking the colorline, and maintaining personal dignity in a workspace where nobody looks like you. I found the novel to be enjoyable and insightful. It's perfect reading for a long plane ride.
Rating: Summary: Brothers and Sisters is an excellent book to read! Review: This book tells a realistic story about the conflict of different backgrounds. Esther, a black female, and Mallory, a white, female try to become friends but the color of their skin is what makes them not close to each other because of the riot happen in L.A. I recommend this book because everyone should know and learn about what is going on in our society between two races, black and white.
Rating: Summary: Very well written, a little long, but an excellent read Review: This book was a little long and some of the issues it covered could have been left out, but overall it was very good and very well written. Bebe touches on a lot if interacial as well as intraracial issues that seem to plague Black Americans. She allows her readers the opportunity to understand why people act and feel the way that they do about specific social and racial issues. This book ranks as one of the best 90's version of Black Literature that is out. The author makes the characters believable and likeable (at least some of them). The primary reason that I like this book is because it doesn't just speak to Black audiences it speaks to White audiences as well. We are all brothers and sisters and like this books shows, until we realize that we are doomed to perish together as fools.
Rating: Summary: Interesting Read Review: This book was very interesting and keep my attention. I felt that I knew the characters in the book and I could see why the things that were happening to them happened. This book took a twist at the end and did not see it coming.
Rating: Summary: A very good book Review: This is a very powerful book. It shows you that all people (black, white, female and male) has their ups and downs living in this confused world.
Rating: Summary: Favorite Book! Review: This is one everyone should read. Ms. Campbell tells her story from many perspectives, with such great insite.
Rating: Summary: A compelling and entertaining read Review: This is one of the best books I have read. I've recommended it to many friends and all of them have loved it. Mrs. Campbell blends the topics of personal, social and racial relationships into an incredible work of art. Don't worry about being bored with this novel, because Brothers & Sisters will definitely keep your attention. While reading this book, it was very easy for me to imagine it being brought to the big screen. I think this would make a very enjoyable movie for everyone. I liked the way all the characters were written and how the plot had some twists & turns in it that eventually leads to a satisfying end. As with me, this book will make you a Bebe Moore Campbell fan!
