Review: Pat Booth became a household name with this novel, her first american published work. Five other UK published books preceded this one. It's clear to say she followed Jackie Collins's roman à clef style to pen (yet again) a wondeful wicked page-turner herself. PALM BEACH chronicles the ups and downs of two misfits yearning to find one another despite the odds. Typical stuff you might say, but what sets the novel apart from the many paint-by-the-numbers releases out there is in its unique approach of style : by using a lyrical undertone while building a richier and craftier plot. Indeed, the author worked hard to create a varation on the same theme, and it shows. The wedding scene working as a prologue and an epilogue, for instance, proves just how in control a talented writer of her range can really be. It is told with depth and precision and a vividness worthy of many classics gathering dust. Make no mistake, PALM BEACH is still a beach book : you get all the stereotypical fluff expected, but with an added edge to it that makes the reading experience all the more worthwhile.
