Summary: fine police procedural romance
Review: A bust that goes bad leads to Atlanta police detectives Tom Madsen and Agnes Jade along with her K9 Gustav being ambushed. Tom dies and Agnes is hospitalized with severe wounds. Her friend Georgia Tech engineering Professor Dr. Alex Rossiter helps Agnes with her recovery including cleaning up her home which was the target of someone angrily searching for something.

Though released from the hospital, Agnes needs more time to recuperate. She asks her twin sister, Vegas gambler Lizzie to switch places with her. She thinks Lizzie can uncover what happened to her and Tom. Agnes believes rouge cops caused the whole disaster. As they make the switch, Lizzie obtains help from Atlanta Journal and Constitution reporter Nathan Hawk while Alex takes Agnes to a small getaway farm. As the two pairs of couple fall in love, danger mounts from dirty cops willing to kill peers to keep a thriving business alive.

The use of twins switching places is an old gimmick, but Fern Michaels keeps her story line brisk because of the differences in personalities between the two siblings. Though Lizzie filling so easily into a cop's shoes seems ludicrous, readers will not care, as she is a vulnerable "bad girl". The sisters and their beaus turn what could have been a poor woman's Serpico into a fine police procedural romance that displays Ms. Michaels' ability to write quality tales in several sub-genres.

Summary: How did she get to be a bestseller??
Review: Fern Michaels has a good story going here, I'll give her that much. However, the run-on dialoge she has between her characters is not only distracting, but just plain bad! There are no breaks in her character's narrations for emotions, feedback, reactions, anything, and it's distracting. I got caught too many times to count being distracted by the bad by-play between characters and abrupt (and nonsensical!) emotional flip-flops. There's just no substance anywhere - the whole thing comes across as shallow, and honestly, like a first-timer's attempt at fiction.

Come on, Ms. Michaels! I know you must be able to write better than this to have become a best selling author. Where are you hiding it?

Summary: Trade it in on something else.
Review: I am a long-time reader from crime mysteries to military thrillers to romance novels, the latter of which being my favorite because I'm pretty much guaranteed a "happy ending". Sometimes, I even get lucky and find a great mix where a talented writer combines the mystery of criminal investigation with the romance of a heart-touching love story.

I thought I'd found that in Trading Places. I was SO wrong, and I figure this one got published only because of the author's name. It couldn't possibly be for worthy content. Oh, it starts off with promise... A female police detective is nearly killed along with her K-9; Her male partner is killed, and she wants those responsible. Good start. If you stopped there, you might be happy, but it goes downhill from there and fast.
1. During her 6 months of recovery, her twin doesn't find out about the ambush, and hasn't been bothered about the lack of communication with her sister.
2. Healthy twin doesn't show up at the hospital or even in the town to find out why the lack of communication from hurt sister.
3. The twins have a very close and loving relationship, DESPITE 1 and 2.
4. Healthy twin can forego her "illegal" life as a Vegas gambler/millionaire and fill in for her twin, posing as an experienced detective, risking her own life to uncover the truth about a corrupt police dept that she knows nothing about with help from a male reporter she just met.
5. She can call in a few chorus line dancers to help "house-sit" without blowing her cover.
6. Meanwhile, the hurt twin, who is a closet millionaire in her own right - lucky her!, goes off with a male professor friend to an isolated farm the girls inherited, but kept secret, to grow "organic carrots". No kidding!

The girls fall in love with their men, and vice versa, although you're given very little reason why. But hey, they make love, so there's something building between them, right?! Uh... well, you're left to wonder, because Ms Michaels brings the reader to the brink, then ... nothing... change of scene/new chapter... with MORE dialogue. WOW! Best, most "agile" lover I've every had! Oh, really? When? How? What? Who? Why?

The idea of hurt good cop struggling to uncover bad cops, and succeeding, is a good concept, but that's all this book has going for it. The rest is unbelievably boring! I couldn't get through this one. I found myself skipping numerous pages right and left and rolling my eyes at the never-ending dialogue, wondering what's the point?! I finally jumped to the last couple pages to ensure at least a happy ending (I am a hopeless romantic), then dropped the book and picked up another... with relief.

Wish I'd read some of these other reviews BEFORE wasting my money on this one.

Summary: 2nd the Editor's touch comment.
Review: I didn't hate this book. I thought it did end way too quickly, but I've had that complaint with a lot of books. The thing that ruined this book for me was the complete lack of editing. On more than one occasion, the wrong name was used. I'm glad someone else noticed it. In a book where swapping identities is the point of the story, you would think someone would proofread the thing.

Summary: Couldn't put it down..
Review: I do not have much time to read between kids and work, but I loved this book. I could not find enough time to read it..each chapter kept me wanting to come back for more. It was romantic, suspenseful, and full of emotion. I highly recommend this book to read

Summary: Great Summer Read!!!
Review: I finished reading "Trading Places" in one sitting and as always loved the character development. Even found myself laughing out loud on numerous occasions at some of the dialogue. You are my all-time favorite author. Your books have given me many hours of reading enjoyment. Thank you!!

Summary: Winner!!!
Review: I have been a long-time reader of Fern Michaels' books which I guess puts me in the category of an "older" reader. What I especially like about her books, including Trading Places, is that she doesn't go on and on and on for pages and pages describing sex scenes. She takes you right up to the bedroom door and let's the reader use his/her imagination. Absolutely loved Lizzie and Aggie. Always wished I had a twin to "trade places" with.

Summary: Boring
Review: I have to agree 100% with the previous review. The dialogue between the characters was horrible, boring and unimaginative. There was almost no emotion and not enough substance to guide the reader in understanding how they feel in love. Needless to say, I do not recommend this book. Its a waste of money and time.

Summary: Disappointing Book
Review: I picked up Ms. Michaels' book hoping to read a top-notch romantic suspense. Instead, I found twin sisters who are totally unbelievable. In addition, Ms. Michaels asks us to suspend belief when the non-police type starts posing as an officer. Not only would this be illegal, it would be highly impractical to assume an untrained sibling could step into the shoes of a trained police officer. The lawbreaking continues when the imposter visits a suspects house, and because she has gotten wet, uses the suspect's dryer to dry her clothes. I could go on and on--especially about the huge chunks of dialogue without breaks and a really pathetic story ending. In summary, this effort by Ms. Michaels was not worth my time or money.

Summary: Light and Funny Summer Reading
Review: I thoroughly enjoyed this book and have always been a fan of Fern Michaels. It doesn't take long to finish, but when the temperature is in the 90's it's time to read. The story is not very believable, but so what, it was enjoyable to read.
