Rating: Summary: A sweet story. Review: "Mount Vernon Love Story : A Novel of George and Martha Washington" is an interesting novel that depicts George Washington in a different light. I knew nothing about his marriage to his wife Martha (who would rather to be called Patsy), or about his home, Mount Vernon. No one can know his thoughts and emotions, so I do wonder if he had such an austere mind. All I know is that the Washington's marriage is one to be looked up to. I recommend.

Rating: Summary: Mount Vernon Love Story Review: An interesting side of George Washington I'm sure most people hadn't thought about. From his domineering mother Mary, to his lost love Sally Fairfax, to Martha "Patsy" Custis, GW didn't seem to have much luck with the women in his life. I didn't realize that GW never had children of his own and that he didn't particularly care for him mother. Living in Fredericksburg this novelization of GW's love life adds an interesting dimension to the Father of our country. Sparse on real detail.
Rating: Summary: Exciting biography Review: George Washington's father died when the future president was young. His mother was a harsh disciplinarian insuring George and his siblings behaved. George seemed to flee her whenever he could get away spending time at his half-brother's Mount Vernon home (yes - that historical home). George's first love is Sally Fairfax and his chosen profession surveyor, but war seemed to be his destiny. First he fought (unsuccessfully) during the French and Indian War and then the American Revolution. This biography uses Washington's retirement to Mount Vernon with his beloved Patsy (Martha's nickname) as a focal point for looking back over the lives of the first president and his spouse. The book concentrates on his personal life not his public life. Thus, readers see another side to Washington. Though opinions are interspersed throughout, mystery suspense thriller writer Mary Higgins Clark provides a strong insightful look at Washington and literally the first "First Lady" that historical readers will enjoy. Rating: Summary: Mr. Washington Goes to Mount Vernon Review: Having recently visited Mount Vernon on vacation, I was very interested to read "Mount Vernon Love Story" by Mary Higgins Clark since I assumed it would lead into further insight of the relationship between George and Martha ("Patsy") Washington. Not only did it delve deeper into their relationship than was learned on the visit to their home, but it also provided a deeper insight into the history of the United States. The book's chapters alternate between the beginning of George and Martha's relationship and the end of his presidency. It's a very clever way of storytelling, and each chapter leads into the next with grace, bouncing between time. I must admit that this is the first book I've ever read by Mary Higgins Clark, so I am not familiar with her writing style. And I am sure that this book of history is quite different from her mystery books. It is her first book, however, and it shows. The love story in the title is more the love of Mount Vernon -- the home, the grounds, the idea of it, etc. -- than the love story between George and Martha Washington. It's about the growth of Mount Vernon and the love its owners and visitors had for it. And why they couldn't stop being excited returning to it day after day. Although I wasn't that drawn into the book and the romance between George and Martha, it was intriguing to learn some details about the Washingtons' lives. I especially enjoyed the chapter involving George introducing Martha to his domineering mother for the first time. Here, I felt drawn into the characters and loved the interaction between them. George tries to keep his temper in place over his mother's criticisms while Martha calms him down with her gentle touch. Unfortunately, this type of character development did not seem to continue through the rest of the book. It was definitely an enjoyable read, but I guess I was hoping for something more.
Rating: Summary: A nice change of pace... Review: I don't normally read Mary Higgins Clark's books, but I decided to give this one a try. It was a fast and interesting read, and I enjoyed it very much. This book was first written in 1969, and is being republished for the first time. It's a book that flashes between George Washington leaving the Presidency in 1797, and his memories of his life, from the beginning, then to when he met Martha ("Patsy") Custis. He grows fonder and fonder of Patsy, and when she is widowed with two young children to raise, he realizes that he really does love her, and marries her. We also read of the trials and tribulations of their life together, and of Washington's many accomplishments and defeats. I'm not sure how historically accurate this book really is, but I enjoyed it. Clark makes the people come alive, and we really do care about George and Patsy. A nice surprize from a book that I didn't think I'd like!

Rating: Summary: A romantic view of a great man Review: I wish I had read this book (Aspire to the Heavens is the original title) when I was first discovering history. Maybe then I would have been more interested in the American Revolution and its leaders a lot sooner in my life. This book, well-written, just piqued my interest in George Washington and his wife, Martha "Patsy" Washington. I know nothing of the first couple ~~ and now, after reading Clark's book, I am intrigued. This book is a very quick read. It skips around a bit but still flows into a rhythm that you can follow. It is part memory lane for George Washington as he reflects on his life as he leaves the presidency of the country he had helped shaped. It is part history ~~ Clark writes this book based on historical facts. But the history lover in me is not satisfied by the historical crumbs thrown my way ~~ the point is, Clark writes very movingly of George Washington and the affair of his heart. And this is an incredibly romantic novel ~~ one that gives a flattering image of George. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in reading historical fiction ~~ if you want to try reading this genre, this book would be the one I'd start with. It's very interesting and tells you a bit about the historical time period and tells you about the love affair George Washington has with his wife. Now that Clark has piqued my interest in the American Revolution with this book ~~ I will be undoubtly grateful for her in writing this. 3-16-03
Rating: Summary: Mount Vernon Love Story Review: The Love of George and Martha Washington "He will make a fine president." Mary Higgins Clark in Mount Vernon Love Story expresses strong emotions and feelings that George and Martha Share during his presidency. The author's purpose of this novel is to demonstrate the historical background and culture of the eighteenth century. The majority of the story takes place in Philadelphia, but at other times it includes other settings such as Mount Vernon. The whole story is about George Washington's thoughts during this time. Throughout the whole book it talks about George Washington's life accomplishments. Mount Vernon Love Story takes us to two distinctive time periods. Each chapter alternates between two frames, one which is 1797, the last day of Washington's presidency. The other chapter starts from 1745, taking us back to his childhood on Ferry Farm until he made his first definitive step towards presidency. The story also focuses on many of the women who had an impact on his like such as his wife, Martha Washington. This book is the first book that Mary Higgins Clark has ever written. It shows clearly the language she uses. The style she uses is very plain and dull in Mount Vernon Love Story. The story does not have an easy flow to it. It's very difficult to follow and understand because it flashes back a numerous amount of times. It is not like any of Clarks other works. The characters in Mount Vernon Love Story are easy to understand. George Washington is a stiff and conservative man that all he wants is to accomplish his goal in life. He watches John Adams inauguration and he reflects on the events that led him to his becoming the first president. George Washington's mother Mary Bell Washington was a very strict, domineering and controlling woman.
The setting in Mount Vernon Love Story is mainly in Philadelphia around 1779. The story had many flashbacks that refer to when he was a little boy. It talks about George Washington in 1745 when he first decided that one day he wanted to be president, and he took his first steps in becoming president. The plot of the story begins with a young boy who had decided that he wanted to be president one day. In the eighteenth century he finally achieved his goal in life. The book talks about his love for Martha Washington and her helping him achieve his goal he had always wanted to accomplish. The story is written in first person to show that the book is Washington's thoughts. It also includes second person to show the other persons perspective. In Mount Vernon Love Story, Mary Higgins Clarks writing is very inattentive to the reader. The book is very difficult to understand. It flashes back and forth between two different time periods imparticular. The story has on major action within it. This is not a book to recommend.
Rating: Summary: Just a nice story Review: This is the first book that I have ever read by Mary Higgins Clark. I found this book to be delightful, charming, and just a nice story. Very rarely do I finish a book (even one that I really like) and wish that it was longer, but that was exactly how I felt about this one. I would recommend it to anyone.
