Rating: Summary: Fabulous! One of the best books I have ever read! Review: This book has to be to date one of the best, if not the best, book I have ever read- it is so outstanding! It brings you through a woman's life and how she changes and creates change in the world around her. It makes you see through the eyes of someone else about aging and the things your mother tells you about life and disregard. You experience it through this woman! I cannot say enough how wonderful this book is- a definite keeper!
Rating: Summary: An all-time favorite Review: This is a book that I will forever cherish in my heart as well as my mind. Being married and having 2 daughters, "Colony" has special meaning for me. Maude Gascoigne Chambliss is the main character. We follow her from all stages in her life, from engagement to her golden years. We are introduced to the woman and men who have shaped her life, there stories, there tears and there joys. Being from New England, I felt familier with the time, tide as well as "feeling" of this Maine Colony. You will need tissues, plenty of them. This is a great American novel for all women to cherish and hold dear to her heart.
Rating: Summary: For us, our daughters and doughter-in-laws. Review: This is a book that I will forever cherish in my heart as well as my mind. Rating: Summary: I loved this book so much! Review: This is one of my all time favorites. A southern woman marries a wealthy man and spends her summers at Retreat in Maine. Her mother-in-law makes no secret of the fact that she finds Maude totally unacceptable as a wife for her son. At Retreat, Maude learns the older women rule and they do everything they can to make Retreat perfect for the men. The book spans 70 years as we watch Maude try to fit in and tolerate her mother in law. Peter, Maude's husband, is a weak man, but Maude loves him and carries on the tradition of making the summers perfect for him. The scenery is as much a character as Maude and the rest of the blue bloods that populate it. Anne Rivers Siddons is a master at creating a setting and making us love the people she has created. I read this book slowly and savored it because I loved Maude and didn't want to say good-bye. After I finished it, I didn't immediately begin another book, as is my usual custom. I spent several days thinking about it and accepting the fact that I wouldn't be visiting with Maude any more. I miss her.
Rating: Summary: Enjoyed the whole book! Review: This was my first book by Anne Rivers Siddon and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole book. I wish Maud could have been a little more agressive toward her husband by telling him to either shape up or ship out, but that is what made the story. I immediately got another book to read by this author.
Rating: Summary: The Best of Siddons books Review: This was the first book I had ever read by this author, it pulled you in right from the start and kept you reading .This book made me go on to read others by Siddons and there have been others that were good but this one in my opinion is still her best.
Rating: Summary: A book I will cherish forever Review: This was the seconed Siddons book I have read. The first was "Upcounty" which I found to be splendid. In "Colony" we are introduced to "Maude", who, marries into a very wealthy and prominent family. In the book we follow her from being a new bride thru every stage in her married life. Maude is a women that feels all the emotions that we have felt as wifes, mothers, daughters and daughters-in-law. This will tug at your heartstrings, make you laugh as well as cry (I found myself crying quite a few times actually). On my top ten list, this is definatly number 1. Enjoy!!
