Rating: Summary: Bottled Secrets Review: Oh my God! What else can I say about this novel accept for that fact that it deeply touched me. This novel caught my attention within the first couple of pages in the first chapter. I just had to keep on reading. Mary Monroe created one conflict after another and there were problems that I would never have expected to happen to such a sweet and innocent young girl. As Annette goes through low self-esteem, rape, misfortune, death(with family and friends), and many other continuous problems throughout the novel, you can almost feel the pain that she suffers over the many lond and hard years of her secretive life.
Rating: Summary: This Book Was Ugly Review: God Don't Like Ugly is an understatement! The Author took this story in so many directions that she could have written another book. Annette's love and trust in her mother, should have allowed her to tell her about the awful things that were happening to her. Her obesity was never fully covered which was a problem within itself. Rhoda STRONG ISSUES!!! Rhoda's issues were never addressed. She had major issues that should have been discussed and maybe she and Annette's friendship could have developed and they both could have had true happy ending. Florence was the strongest and most positive character, it's too bad she came in at the end. We hope there will not be a sequel because there is so much rape, molestation and overeating that a reader can take in one book!Sisters Interested in Reading (SIR)
Rating: Summary: Oooh, they were all 'ugly'. Review: From Annette all the way down Mr Buttwright, these are some shady people in this book. Where do it begin. Annette is this homely overweight girl who moves to Ohio with her Mah Dear where the nightmare really begin when Mr. Boatwright comes into their lives and scars Annette for what seems like life. I was rooting for Annette to tell somebody other than Rhoda about him sexually abusing her and one day they'd come around and believe her. I could never keep something bottled up all those years. Both Annette Goode and Rhoda Nelson treasure some dark ugly secrets but only confide in each other about them. And Rhoda, that girl reminded me a Stephen King novel he hasn't written about yet. He should do a story on her alone. You can't just go around killing people just because they [make you angry]. Everytime somebody died, you knew who was behind it. There's a lot of murders and rapes that take place thoughout this novel.Grim and depressing at times but there's some scenes that will have you laughing out loud. I like the 50s, 60s settings/themes but there doesn't seem to be that many 70s themes (music, events, TV shows) The ending seemed a bit rushed but there was a dramatic change towards the end but for the better. There should be a sequel to the novel because Annette was closing a big chapter in her life and was about to begin another one. A grimy book about people with ugly ways but I love every bit of it. Worth a read.
Rating: Summary: Disappointed Review: I picked up this book in hopes that it would be an interesting coming of age story. What I found was an extremely unrealistic portrayal of the life of an abused child. The author seems not to have done much research or background regarding the responses of abused children to abuse or on much else for that matter. In handling the protagonists move from Ohio To Pennsylvania we are given very little reason as to why this was done. Was someone there for her? Did she have job prospects? As we are lead to believe she is quite close to her friend why did she not move to Florida? Another instance was when Annette was given the factory job. Why on earth would a mere factory worker in Erie, PA , unskilled mind you, be making 7.00 an hour a whopping 280.00 a week in the early 70's? When I read this I hoped that perhaps the author had done some marvelous leap in time. This shows, to me, a disregard of the author for reality and a definite blind eye to research in order to bolster a character. I am not one to put down a book once I've started it however in this instance I considered doing so due to its ludicrous nature and unbelievable/unsympathetic characters. All were drawn with an unskilled writers wishful hand and disregard. I would NEVER recommend this book and it is my sincere hope that the author will improve upon her skills before venturing to write again and inflict such torture upon unsuspecting readers.
Rating: Summary: And He Ain¿t too keened on Beauty either Review: How do I begin to summarize this book. At first I thought the book was sort of on the hilarious side because of all the characters and the characteristics they portrayed. They supposing sat around confessing to be so called Christians and all they did was gossip about the other's life. The main character is a very shy, timid little girl is overweight and low self-esteem who is confused and feeling betrayed because of the sexual abused she sufferes daily at the hand of a so called trusted family friend-uncle Mr. Boatwright. Mr. Boatwright is a rooming boarder who appeared out of nowhere at the church and the mother was asked to take him in. Her mother instructs her to do "whatever" Mr. Boatwright tells her. I do think she meant literally. Annette tried her darnedest to make friends, and almost gave up until the summer her mother move them during her 13th birthday. That's where she met Rhonda Nelson, she's rich, powerful, aggressive, beautiful, slim, long beautiful hair, green-eyed and light complexion. Annette now feels like she can trust Rhonda with her secret of the abuse and sexual immorality. Rhonda is flabbergasted. She can't believe what she's hearing, unaware of the lack of courage that Annette posses. Rhonda is now the soul mate that helps her survive her teen-age years. Annette knows finding out things about her best friend and her life she never knew before. This book is so deep and things like this are happening right today and right under our very noses. Annette's mothers on the other hand was selfish, manipulative and for the lack of a better word, blind. She was so wrapped up into her business she didn't notice anything wrong with her child, but she have really been that blind or just plain stupid. Beside she would get married to Mr. Boatwright as soon as Annette finish school? Scary Mary, PeeWee, the Blind Girl, Viola, all had more courage and grace than her own mother did. You will find this book to be so intriguing until you won't be able to put it down. I recommend this book for anyone. This book will make you laugh with amazement, cry with disgust, hate, see red and sympathize with Annette through your entire reading. I was completely fascinated by the display of showmanship amongst the characters. Not one time did I think Mr. Boatwright got what he deserved.
Rating: Summary: Great Book! Review: Oh my goodness! I have to say that this is one of the best books I have ever read! Talk about realistic!
Rating: Summary: Never Again Review: Normally, when I find a literary treasure, I put it away in order to read it again at a later date. This book was placed on my list of books that I will never read again. I found it depressing, unrealistic and the trials of the heroine, downright unneccessary. I could not relate to the main character and did not want to. This was one of the few times that I could recall reading a book that I truly did not enjoy. I kept reading and waiting for the author to redeem herself and help me discover something that I liked about the book in the process. It never happened, so this book goes on my "never again" list.
Rating: Summary: Depressing from beginning to end... Review: I would have enjoyed this book a whole lot more if something good would've happened to Annette. Instead, it was just page after page of depressing situations: women getting raped (even the dead ones!), beaten, cheated on, prostituting. It seemed as though the author has some fascination with abuse towards women. The author has the skills to craft a good novel, but I'd like to read about something more uplifting for her leading character[s].
Rating: Summary: A Very Good Book To Read! Review: What a book! Mary Monroe has definately done a fine job with adding to the much needed market of good books. God Don't Like Ugly takes you into the world of Annette Goode, her mother and Mr. Boatwright, a wonderer who becomes a live-in grandfatherly family addition. As the story moves on, you quickly learn that Annette and Mr. Boatwright don't see eye to eye on things and Annette begins to feel that Mr. Boatwright doesn't necessarily have her best interest at heart. Then along comes Rhoda, who befriends Annette and after sharing her thoughts and feeling with Rhoda about Mr. Boatwright, Rhoda decides it's time to teach Mr. "Buttwright" as Rhoda calls him.......a lesson he'll never forget. Entertaining and a page turner until the very end, God Don't Like Ugly is a definate read for all who would enjoy a good book!
