Rating: Summary: First Book By Mary Monroe but Defintely Not The Last!!!!!! Review: I am an 18-year old college student and this book touched my heart. The main characters in this book are Annette Goode, Mr. Boatwright, and Rhoda Nelson. Mr. Boatwright is a man that boarded at Annette's Mother's house and he abuses Annette, an overweight child, physically and mentally from about the age of seven. Mr. Boatwright, supposedly a God-fearing christian, threatened her with a gun and told her that if she told that he was going to kill her. She told only one person of this abuse and that was Rhoda. ... I urge everyone to read this book. At times I was very emotional and wanted to cry, but it was a great book nevertheless.
Rating: Summary: I liked this book! Review: "To this day I don't know exactly where Mr. Boatwright came from. . . The way he was looking at me, making me feel like I was something good to eat, I should have known he was up to something nasty even then." This musing of a reflective Annette Goode begins the story of a young girl harboring a poor self image and hurtful secret and the unlikely friendship that she finds comfort in. Mary Monroe's God Don't Like Ugly is the tale of Annette, a young woman struggling to find herself and who has experienced a great deal of loss on many levels. Out of the ashes comes her phoenix, Rhoda. Rhoda, a rebellious young girl, is everything that Annette isn't. Recognizing this, Rhoda is bound and determined to be Annette's friend and she takes her role as savior and defender very seriously. As their relationship grows Annette finds what she believes is true friendship and when she confides in Rhoda her terrible secret she finds true acceptance. It is not until they both reach adulthood that Annette finds out that both came with a price. Ms. Monroe tells a bothersome yet beautiful story. She weaves a basket full of lies, deceit, abuse, and retribution, all disguised in colorful cellophane of love and a red bow of friendship. This book was truly awesome. Ms. Monroe has a wonderful ability to tell a powerful story and giving life to interesting and sometimes amusing characters. She kept this reader's attention the whole time. I had this book for about six months before I read it. After I finished I didn't understand what had taken me so long. Some parts of the books may leave you questioning and in disbelief, but when you stop to think about it isn't that exactly what life does sometimes?...
Rating: Summary: God Don't Like Ugly Review: Even though this book was just a tad bit depressing it held my attention. I loved how real the characters seemed and how crayz the people were. It was great.
Rating: Summary: No Doubt the Best Review: "God Don't Like Ugly" follows the relationship of two young girls through the turbulent times of the 1960's and 70's. After having to bear a family secret on her own, for years, a young girl finally has a friend to confide in. The girls have very little in common yet they forge a friendship over time. Taking qualities from each other; together they overcome such obstacles as broken homes, child abuse, and prejudices. Still while facing these issues, they continue to proceed through their adolescence/lives; while delighting in each other's company & relying on their friendship. Spanning over the period of two decades; this page turner is sad and frustrating. The constant tenion created by Mary Monroe made me feel helpless and angry. While I felt unsatisfied with the ending; the plot twists and turns almost made up for my dissatisfaction.
Rating: Summary: so sad, so sad Review: I thought the book was very good. It's kinda depressing that the girl gets molested and picked on, but it's true and society always turn their heads and don't pay it no attention. Rhoda was a good friend to annette. That's the only time Annette felt wanted and accepted. It's a good book. It's one of those books when you need a good cry or some realization. It's not a book if you want something light, this book is deep and REAL!!!!!!!!
Rating: Summary: Depressing but Interesting Review: Annette's storyline was very depressing. If it hadn't been for the inclusion of Rhoda, I would have stopped reading the book after the first few chapters. I think Rhoda should have been the protagonist--not Annette. How many persons can say they have a friend like Rhoda who risked so much to help them? Other elements in the book were so incredibly pathetic that I wanted to rip the book to shreds. For example, in later years, Annette regrets having an abortion as the result of rape; her mother admits to having an affair with the rapist (although she doesn't know about the rape); Annette wants to pursue a relationship with her low-down father; Annette turns down office jobs to continue working in a greasy factory; and Annette has the nerve to discontinue her relationship with Rhoda when she should have been worshipping the ground on which Rhoda walked. WHAT WAS THE AUTHOR THINKING??
Rating: Summary: It was ok. Review: I'm 32 pages from finishing the book in hopes that something good happens to Annette. I normally dont enjoy reading books about child molestation but for some reason I continued to read it just to see what type of payback Mr. Boatwright would recieve. I was shocked. It's hard to believe that a mother would leave her child at home alone with a man she hardly knows let alone allow this man to move in with them. I know it's just a book but some of the situations should be believable. It was the 1960's and Annette's mother mentions to the restaurant's waiter that Annette is 21, old enough to drink. Well in the 1960's, I thought the legal age to purchase and drink alcohol was age 18. Also, the author mentions that Annette makes $7.00 an hour in that year as a newly hired factory worker. I DONT THINK SO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I dont know what to say about Rhoda. I"m not sure if Annette or Rhoda was the main character. I'm reading this book because a co-worked raved about how good this book is. My feelings arent the same as hers. This book is a bit depressing. I'm hoping that there will be a happy ending. I purchased Ms. Monroe's other novel. I"m hoping it's better than this one.
Rating: Summary: sad, and depressing Review: Annette is a characther that you have to feel sorry for, she's and overweight teenager who's abused by her mom's border Mr. Boatwright. Mr Boatwright a supposely chrisitan man, is never suspected of being a abuser. Rhoda is Annette's beatiful best friend who she confides in. Rhoda helps Annette deal with Mr. Boatwright in a way Annette never would have imagined. As the book goes on, Annette finds out things about Rhoda, that she just can't deal with. I throught the book was good, but so very sad, and it's an eye opener for parents that let other people stay in your house.
Rating: Summary: I wanted to kill him! Review: This is an excellent book and I will purchase future novels from this author because I liked this book so much. I had everybody at my job reading this book and everybody had nothing but good reviews. I hated Mr.Boatwright with such passion that I myself wanted Annette to kill him, but that was not possible. Annette was not strong enough to do anything like that, after years of abuse and her father leaving her at a young age she was not capable of even standing up for herself. As I was reading the book I was expecing her to get counseling as an adult but she never did. Just like so many people in out community. I too wanted her to confront her mother about what was going on all of those years...no disrespect her but to let her know because instead of "serving up the judge" she should've been paying attention to her child. I really enjoyed reading this story and even though it was based on abuse you were still able to laugh out loud.
Rating: Summary: I love this book! Review: I really took pride in reading this book,it was a real page turner. It had a great plot and I recommend this book to anyone.
