Summary: Read Toni Morrison or Maya Angelo instead
Review: I read this because the author was likened to Maya Angelo and Toni Morrison. They each wrote a book dealing with a young African American girl being raped ("I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" and "The Bluest Eye", respectively). It is not an insult when I say that Mary Monroe is no Toni Morrison--no one else is. Only one artist is Leonardo da Vinci. "The Bluest Eye" was Toni Morrison's first book, and although she has implied that it is her weakest, it is a much more powerful book than "God Don't Like Ugly." If you like this book, then you should read "The Bluest Eye." Maya Angelo's book "I know Why the Cged Bird Sings" is also a beautifully written classic.

Summary: Mothers protect. The world is full of ugly people!
Review: This book was a nice read. I really don't read books that are based on the past but this book found it's way into my hands a couple times. Finally I decided to read it. and once I started I found myself getting really upset when I was reading it because people keep interupting me (I read it at work lol)! After a couple chapters I wanted to know more. I was very angry at the mother in ths book! I wanted to strangle her. How could she not protect her child? How could you not see the signs? A little girl with a strange man in her life for long periods of time damn you Muh Dear! Brother Boatwright I was waiting for the day that God seen the UGLY he was doing to that poor baby! I hated him. No I really hated him. I did not like how the charcters had so much respect for this beast. And poor little Annette keep this secret and never revealed the secret because it would break her mother's heart. The charcter Rhoda I was kind of confused about herI knew that she was crazy but the book did not provide enough info on why this girl was a nut. This book really opened my eyes. I am not a mother yet and I cannot predict the future of my unborn child's childhood. But I am going to try with every ounce of love in my body to protect my child by any means. Moreover shower it with love. To all the liitle scaried girls in the world you are somebody and speak out let it be known! To all the Mr. Boatwright's GOD DON'T LIKE UGLY AND HE IS WATCHING YOU.

Summary: I Loved This Book!!!!!!
Review: This book was so good I could not put it down. The Author places you in Ohio and I felt like I was right there with the main character Annette and her best friend Rhoda. All of the characters are memorable and funny. Even the boarder Mr.Boatwright was funny although what he was doing to Annette was not funny. This was a very touching book that will have the reader laughing and just having to put the book down to catch their breath. Enough said please go buy this book after reading so many books This is one to keep.

Summary: avid reader
Review: I've been reading for many years, and I have to say that Mary Monroe is one of the most dynamic authors I've ever encountered. I have a fondness for African American authors, and I have designated her as my favorite. What I think I love about her the most is her plots. Her books aren't about romantic fairy tales with beautiful characters, but ordinary people battling issues that were so dominant in the south and still exist to this day. I've read so much until most books are predictable to me. One of the things I look for now is the author's way of getting there. Mary Monroe has an awesome twist to her words. I am intrigrued by her endings because they aren't happy endings...some of them don't even end! If the book ended, then what discussions can you come up with as to what happens to the characters? I will say this, Mary Monroe is not for the beginner or occasional reader. To be as remarkable as she was in her first novel is amazing! I just finished reading the sequel to this book, and I'm in awe! You go girl!

Summary: CAN'T WAIT FOR MORE!!!!
Review: You Go Ms. Monroe!!! I have been known to predict where a story is going; Not so with "God don't like ugly" It starts out typical and then flips the switch on you. What a great ride! "God STILL don't like ugly" can't arrive fast enough!!!

Summary: Great book by a talented author
Review: I've been looking at this book for over a year and finally had the chance to read it. It exceeded my expectations. The description of events is so realistic and Mary Monroe had my attention from the time I opened the book. This book is accessible enough to be read on a weekend, but thought-provoking enough not to insult the intelligence of a fiction guru.

I considered giving this book 5 stars, but instead gave it 4 because the plot weakened in the last 10 chapters (last 20% of the book). Most of the novel was focused on Annette's pre-teen and teenage years, but toward the end of the book the author tried to cover 10+ years in a short span of time. At that point the plot moved too quickly and also became predictable, rushed and in the end, somewhat pointless.

I haven't had the chance to read the sequel, but I think the book would have been better if it ended when Annette graduated high school and continued in more detail in the sequel novel. Despite this shortcoming, this is an exceptional piece of literature that is realistic and teaches life lessons. Some people say that they find some of the character's decisions frustrating, but aren't the actions of real people frustrating as well?

Summary: 3.5 Stars. This story is bizzare and disgusting!
Review: I'm pretty new to this author and her subject matter. I read the Upper Room. With GDLU, I thought it was disgusting of what Mr. Boatwright was doing to poor li'l ol Annette. But in the reality, this sort of stuff really happens. Kudos to the author for exposing this. However, on the other hand, her best friend, Rhoda the Rodent, was a demonic, evil creature. Her behavior was farfectched. It was a new and interesting story compared to the norm. The story was very predictable. It was obvious who was killing the people once we found out that it was Rhoda. I like the way this author writes and I think I'll read more of her work because her underlying message is to write to enlighten readers and not to just entertain them.

Summary: Missed opportunity!...and that was ugly.
Review: I personally love reading books that take place in the South in the early to mid 1900's of the African American experience. There's just something about it that I find so humbling. This book may not be for everyone as it really touches on the subject of child sexual abuse. The description was quite ronchi I didn't expect all that. The book was good but also frustrating. I'm disappointed that the author did not take the opportunity with this book to "out" the abuser. Instead she chose to keep the crime a secret and the shame remained on the victim. A huge aspect of this book was also on friendship. The development of the friendship was really nice, makes you remember that best friend you might have had back the school days. Good times:) the book ended with (once again!) some over the top drama. (...) I'm hoping that in the sequel, the secret of the crime will finally be revealed.
