Review: Meet Annette, she is the example of a young girl in America being victimized by a family member or a trusted friend. Sometimes they tell, sometimes they don't. They endure years of abuse and we wonder why they are so messed up. Annette has an encounter with Mr Boatwright, a trusted boarder in her home. She is a good girl, so she obeys her mother when she tells her to do what Mr Boatwright tells her. Unfortunately, literally. As she gets older and her friendship with the beautiful Rhoda blossoms, things change. She and Rhoda share a secret that holds them together then, destroy a friendship. There are other interesting characters in this book, that all play a part in ANnette's life, from Scary Mary to PeeWee to Viola. THis is a must read, I am sure you will enjoy.

Summary: Better than The Color Purple
Review: I highly recommend this book. There is something in it for everybody! As bad as the abuser Mr. Boatwright (Buttwright) was, I felt sorry for him. I didn't like the fact that Rhoda killed him, but like the title states: GOD DON'T LIKE UGLY. I expected the author to "preach" about the wages of sin, but this story was told in such an intriguing style that was not the case. I am white but I could relate to these characters. My husband is reading it now and he is as stunned as I was. Mary Monroe is a Major new talent. I hope to see more of her work!

Summary: THIS YEAR'S "COLOR PURPLE"
Review: The title and the cover of this book caught my attention. I started reading the book in the store and finished it in one sitting the same day. It is a remarkable story about a remarkable young black woman, women of all races and ages will be able to identify with. There was a lot of humor which softened the blows of "sexual abuse". The characters were so well developed they practically jumped off the pages! Everything was so vivid I could easily see this as a major movie. The main character, Annette Goode, never let me down maintaining her dignity throughout her ordeal. This is a haunting look at a sensitive subject. Mary Monroe's writing style is fresh and captivating. Hopefully, we will hear from her again SOON. This is one book I will recommend to all my friends. ENJOY!

Summary: "God Don't Like Ugly"
Review: Jasmine W. Lowe
'God Don't Like Ugly'
God Don't Like Ugly is a story of a girl name Annette Goode. Annette was a shy, overweight, dark-skinned young girl who went through a lot during her life. When she was young her and her mother moved and a man name Mr. Boatright moved in with them. Throughout the first year Mr. Boatright replaces the absence of little Annette's dad. In the second year Mr. Boatright starts sexually abusing Annette who was only seven years old. he continues to do it for the next ten year of Annette's life.
When Annette moved into her new house she meets a girl name Rhoda, who becomes her life long friend. Rhoda is everything Annette would like to be, beautiful, strong, smart, thin, and light-skinned. Rhoda lives in a house with her father who is a Negro undertaker, her white grandmother, referred as Granny Goose, her white Uncle Johnny, and her brother Jock. Having Rhoda as a friend helps Annette in some ways and in some ways it doesn't.
The book was very interesting, I never was bored once reading it. It's an excellent novel. In some of the characters one might find characteristics of themselves. I can relate to Annette. Sometime I feel like the shy fat girl who has no friends and searchers for a person to confide in. The difference between Annette and I is that I haven't been sexually abused. Then on the other hand, I feel like I can also relate to Rhoda. Sometimes a person has to stick up for themselves and not take so much drama from people. I really don't like when people try to take advantage of other people. There is also a difference between Rhoda and I, some things that I thought Rhoda wasn't cable of I wouldn't do.
I recommend this book to people who love to stay reading and really interested in books. While reading the book you never want to put it down, you will always want to know what's going to happen next.

Summary: "Ought to be required reading in schools"
Review: I started reading GOD DON'T LIKE UGLY on a Monday night, read past midnight. The next night, after everyone had gone to sleep, I'd run to the book to see if Annette was in danger. She had become a dear friend by Chapter 1; had to see her through. By Thursday I couldn't wait for evening...so I stayed in my room during the day, finished the book, and sighed a big one for sweet Annette. What a story teller Ms. Monroe is! She deserves the Pulitzer Prize. The powerful voice/messages of GOD DON'T LIKE UGLY reminded me of TO KILL A MOCKING BIRD.
