Rating: Summary: That's true God does not like ugly Review: The was truly a good book and I still can not figure out why the author made Rhoda out to be a pampered princess. She was truly a cold child, which in turn she turned out to be a cold human. Annette was truly a sweet girl, but naive and her Muh'Dear was something else. I havent read many books that was placed in the era and enjoyed them this book was different. I wish this author would have done more with Pee-wee and Annette who knows there may be a book sequel. Rhoda did some really ugly things, and Mister Buttwright was NASTY, NASTY, Florence knew all along about him. It was interesting to see Scary Mary not use Florence for her on selfish use. Florence blossomed into a beautiful person and so did Annette. Mr. Levi I would have done something really bad, but Annette was too sweet for that. I would recommend this book to everyone.
Rating: Summary: You reap what you sow. Review: This book displays the abuse of a child that goes on each and every day by trusted friends and family members. Here we have Annette who has been instructed by her mother to do whatever Mr. Buttright tells her. At no point in the book did I feel sorry for Mr. Buttright. Yes, he had a bad childhood but that didn't give him the right to abuse a child. Later in life, Annette becomes friends with Rhoda who is pretty and appears to have a good life but Rhoda has some serious issues going on.Annette's mother was just plain blind . She couldn't see that something was wrong with her child from day to day. Maybe she didn't want to see it. After all, Mr. Buttright was going to marry her after Annette finished school. Scary Mary, the blind girl, Viola and Peewee all played a major part in making this book one that will remain with me for some time. This novel comes highly recommended. Mary Monroe, I applaud you. Excellent work. Be Blessed!
Rating: Summary: The title threw me Review: This book was loaned to me. When I first read the title, I thought "here we go again." Recently books I have read by African American authors are about "relationship drama." I was pleasantly surprised to find that this book explored different kinds of relationships. I passed this book on to a friend who complained she was also tired of reading the same "types" of books. I hope she enjoys it as much as I did. My only criticism on this book is that some of the characters were let off the hook to easily. I think seeing justice brought to some of the foul acts that occured would have completed this book.
Rating: Summary: Should be an Oprah's Book Club Pick! Review: I happened across this book at the library last Sunday. I started it that evening and was finished with it by Monday afternoon! I couldn't put it down! Mary Monroe is a talented writer. The characters so easy to visualize, and you feel their emotions. Anyone who has ever had a best friend they couldn't live without will relate to this story. I truly believe this should be an Oprah's Book Club pick because it is similar in many ways to other OBC books. I highly recommend this book. I'm looking forward to reading more by Mary Monroe.
Rating: Summary: God don't like ugly Review: I would like to compliment Mary Monroe on this book. It was well writing, a page turner till the end. Annette turned the saddness of her childhood into a victory. She made me believe in the power of forgivness.
Rating: Summary: A shocking and good book Review: I had no intention of buying this book, but something about the cover caught my eye. After reading the jacket I thought ok sounds good I love sistafriend books. Every character in this book reminded me of someone I once knew or someone in my family. If I had a gun I would've shot Mr Boatright, Annette's mother truly got on my nerves with her not seeing self. How can you nto see your child in pain and agony, how can you not see a child has a secret she needs to tell. I loved the Rhonda character, she was made out as a princess to Annette but Annette saw through her glass house and realized she had cracks in her windows just like she did. The friendship and secrets they shared I thought would bond them forever, but what tore them apart was enough strain for anyone. There's another character in the book I loved but her name escapes me shewas the blind girl who had the gift of knowing and the insight of a grandma.
Rating: Summary: Roses among thorns Review: I loved this book. Annette, a young child who endured pain and suffering at the hands of Mr. Boatwright, a boarder who lived with her and mother, was a strong, beautiful character written by Mary Monroe. I loved all the characters in this book, especially Annette. Although Annette endures the pain of being molested by a one-legged man, she was strong enough to grow some roses among those thorns. She was befrinded by Rhonda, a beautiful sistah, who also had some problems. This book is not only about surviving molestation, but it is about life and growing up in the 196o's and 1970's. Every character in the book grew up, including Pee Wee (Rhonda's brother), Muh'Dear, and Annette. I truly enjoyed this book.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful, Wonderful, Wonderful Review: A must read, I came across this book in my local bookstore, the cover caught my eye, I read the insert, took it home and within 24 hrs of my purchase I was done reading it. If your looking for a great book this is the one. I have never written a review before and read quite often. Trust me, you'll love it. Thank you Mary Monroe for letting me into your world.
Rating: Summary: A Haunting Story You Won't Forget!! Review: I saw a co-working reading this book and he told me it was about a one-legged rapist. I purchased a copy not knowing what to expect. I was surprised and stunned. This book blew me away! I couldn't wait to read each chapter and was saddened when it ended. THese characters remind me of myself and other people in my life. I don't condone murdering rapists but in the case of this wretched one-legged rapists--he had it coming! My only disappointment was that the story ended to soon. I hope to read a sequel!
Rating: Summary: You have to read this one!!!!!! Review: I ran across this book in the book store and the cover and title caught my attention. After reading the synopsis I had to purchase this book. Once I starting reading it I could not put it down. The characters were so real it was like I was there with Annette, Mr. Boatright (Mr. Boatright was off the hook, just plain crazy), Rhonda really seem like a good friend to Annette, however girl friend had some serious problems and Scary Mary I think that name fit her character perfect. I enjoyed this book from beginning to the end. I look forward to the reissue of "The Upper Room" by May Monroe
