Summary: A no brainer if your bored and there is nothing eles to read
Review: I was so excited to read this book. Into the 2nd chapter I could hardly believe what I was reading, Wuthering Heights? I had to check the cover of the book again. The only reason I finished it was sheer curiosity. I was most amazed at the character of Marchs husband, Richard. What man would let a woman he loves just leave without doing one damn thing? Especially when she is with a man like Hollis and Richard knew what kind of man he was. The characters were weak. I yearned for more depth in all of them. The ending was horrible. Your telling me that after all March went through with Hollis that she would not have been in the last few pages.( I do'nt want to give the ending away in case someone still wants to read it.) Right! It was easy to read and I did read it quickly. Hoping that it would get better. Did Oprah really read this book?

Review: I was very transfixed with the story.Every page held my attention. The story showed how a person could be totally taken over by another person, especially when there is love involved. The ending was a total surprise to me.I was sorry when I finished the book.

Summary: This book STINKS!
Review: Actually, I would prefer to give this book no stars as it deserves none. I hated this book. I could not relate to nor feel sorry for any of the characters. The way March let Hollis manipulate her was pathetic beyond words. A friend lent me this book as she enjoyed it and thought I would too. All I can say is Thank God I was not the one to spend money on this book. Shame on Oprah for making such a foolish choice and shame on the author for wasting paper on such a rotten book.

Summary: Hello....Have you ever heard of Wuthering Heights?????
Review: I beleive Alice Hoffman to be a great writer, but with this novel, she is simply affirming her ability to bring a classic into modern-day literature. This book would be excellent if you have no desire to read period peices and you need to do a book report on Wuthering Heights, but for the avid reader it is merely a forgery.

I could write great novels too, if I stole ideas from classics. Maybe this week I'll write an updated version of Great Expectations and pawn it off as an original.

Summary: Oprah is right on the money$$$
Review: I bought the book because Oprah told me to. Who am I to question OPRAH? The first chapter - I said, well, she's wrong. The 2nd chapter, and every chapter that followed, made a tremendous impact on me. I felt the emotions of each character with intensity. Alice Hoffman has the ability to expose her characters to you. I don't typically like romance novels, and by no means would I classify this as a romance novel, however as the two main characters are rekindling a past love, you feel that "passion wave" run through you. Alice gives you enough of that to feel the intensity of the two characters, but then the haunting intensity of the relationship takes over. This book reminds you about the importance of independence and self fulfillment. A must of a summer read!

Summary: An utter dissappointment
Review: This was my first Alice Hoffman experience, and I must say, my last. I almost stopped reading after 2 chapters, because I was not finding any enjoyment in her way of writing. I found it void of imagery, excitement, and completely void of passion. Although characters do not have to be likeable, (as in the case of practically all in this book,) good writing will make you feel for them in one way or another. I felt nothing at all. Hoffman dribbles on too much about nonsense without truly creating a picture in one's mind of the world and the characters she tries to convey. She tries to tell it as if she were the alter-ego of each character, but to me, her way is not effective. I know many will disagree, tastes in authors are as different as tastes in food, but I personally do not recommend this book.

Summary: I wish zero stars were on option....
Review: I just finished reading this last night. It was right up there with Horse Whisperer as far as being a waste of time. Although well written, the story plot and characters were lame. Halfway through I almost gave up on it until it started to look like there was a reason why the main characters were such turds. Then, plodding my way to the end, it turned out they were what I suspected in the first place. This was a story of lame, selfish, weak people who are incapable of making the right choices for themselves and the people that should be most important to them. To me, it was such a testement of what's wrong with people in the world today. I'm really wondering why Alice Hoffman thought we needed a story depicting the virtues of doing what we want, when we want, without regards to others around us. Heck, why not save yourself the time and just watch anything on primetime TV these days.

Was there a reason this book got such acclaim? Is there some redeeming quality! ! in this book that I just missed completely? I really wish I got it.....

Summary: This book was a complete rip off of "Wuthering Heights"
Review: This is the first book by Alice Hoffman that I have read. The high school romance theory intrigued me. But, once I started to read the book I was completely struck by the similarity to Wuthering Heights. I didn't think that was allowed. Oh well, I guess the ending was different enough so as not to make Alice Hoffman guilty of complete plagiarism.

Summary: Save your time with this one
Review: I frankly am surprised by the content of this story. I have never read a book that has had such undeveloped, shallow characters and a plot-line that was weak and predictable. I picked this on a recommendation from Oprah's book club, and was very disappointed. The plot was not developed fully and therefore made it very hard to believe why a strong woman would leave her husband to stay with the love of her life and once she has done so, becomes so fragile and weak and subservient. The whole story makes women look bad and men look worse! These characters have absolutely no shred of morality at all: there lives are replete with adultry, incestual longings, and mental and physical abuse. There are better books out there that deal with the subject of abuse in a more mature way. Perhpas Ms. Hoffman ought to read them.
