Rating: Summary: This is one of the "dumbest" books I have ever read. Review: This book was nonsence
Rating: Summary: easy reading Review: While this book was easy to read, I didn't find myself not being able to put it down. In comparison to Oprah's other selections it falls under the traditional lines of a woman suffering and depressed. Hollis seemed too good to be true in the beginning. Victims of abuse will find this title amazing and powerful, if not painful to read.
Rating: Summary: Takes you back to the simple life Review: What a great story Here on Earth was. This is by far, the best pick of the Oprah book club. I did not want this story to end. Although Hollis is mean, he had a reason to be. Although March is free spirited, she's weak. No other book out there has such diverse and untraditional characters.
Rating: Summary: Didn't draw me in Review: I love reading. I've read just about all of Oprah's pick and this one was the most disappointing. I didn't feel for March at anytime during the story. Hollis was presented as this complicated villian/hero who was only confusing at best. I don't think that the author gave us enough to actually care for anyone in the story at all. This was my first time reading a book by this author and probably the last.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely Magical Review: Wonderful! Absolutely amazing. I have read this story more than 5 times, without even feeling bored. There's something magical about this story and I assure you that it has not lost it's magic.
Rating: Summary: profoundly moving and thought provoking Review: A lot is packed into this quick-read. A reader needs to "feel" for the protagonist; therefore, at first, the lack of background character development is bothersome. Yet, as you read further, you'll find this stripped approach adds to the starkness of the subject matter. You'll find yourself thinking about aspects of this book long after you've put it down (war atrocities, complicated love, self-guilt, etc.).
Rating: Summary: ultimately sad and depressing book. Loved IT! Review: I enjoyed this book. Perhaps it was Hollis's charactor's detatchment from his family, friends that made me love this bo ok. Although perhaps this is what made this book brief and to the point. It wasn't until the end, that I could really feel for the main charactors. Believe it or not, I felt intensely sad for Hollis.
Rating: Summary: A Winner From Oprah Review: A really different kind of book from Oprah but one that is powerful and compelling. I'm glad to see Oprah pick something so untouchable. No other writer has had the guts to write such a disturbing grotesque tale of lover turned evil.
Rating: Summary: Disturbing yet Provokingly Beautiful Review: Here on Earth is an psychological-like book in that it reads as a simple novel of a young woman's first sexual experience with an adopted brother, and yet we all know it is so much more than that. Like all stories relating to the family it is disturbing and I found myself thinking of the story long after I finished reading it. But I also wanted more - I wanted to know more about both of the major characters, and what drove them both. I wanted more of the history, horrifying and disturbing though it is. I wanted to identify with them both because what makes a truly great book is the ability to absorb the reader into the story. It is a very good book, but it just falls short of being a great book.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful and Deep Review: The best opening line of any novel, this book is really interesting. Hollis and his female are the sexiest twosome ever, and don't we all know a one like them?
