Rating: Summary: I guess if this were really the worst book in the world.... Review: I wouldn't have been so disgusted with the character of March. I mean, disgust IS an emotion, right? So I guess I can say that my emotions were stirred by this book.So if you want to be disgusted by the portrayal of one super-duper huge loser named March, you should definately read this book.
Rating: Summary: Very creative, but certainly no fairy tale... Review: No, this book does not have a fairy tale ending. No, the characters aren't exactly people you would want to go to lunch with. However, when you look deeper, it is absolutely captivating. Alice Hoffman is a genious when it comes to setting the tone. People who didn't like this book obviously didn't get the subtle symbolism used to create the mood. If you want happy-endings, go read mother goose. "Here on Earth" is meant to represent...well...love here on earth. P.S. Just because a movie and a book have the same title, doesn't mean they are related.
Rating: Summary: Don't listen! Review: Don't listen to the people who didn't like this book :) I absolutely adored it, and I've read so much that it's rare tha I come across a book I truly love. This is definitely my favorite book of the last 5 years; it's original, moving, and vibrant. If you only ever read one of Alice Hoffman's books (read them all! ), make it this one.
Rating: Summary: BE WARNED Review: This book has nothing in common with the movie currently playing--the only similairty is the title. The LeeLee Sobieski teen romance flick, a cross between Love Story and American Pie, is nothing like this book. This book, for the rocord, is a poorly inpsired piece of adult fiction roughly based on Wuthering Heights. Ha! Read Emily Bronte's original if you are in the mood for a dark and brooding romance and leave this book alone. It stinks! Incidentally, the movie is not so great either--completely differnt story--love triangles, rich vs. poor, and a melodramic ending ala City of Angels--no thanks! Where have all the good books gone?
Rating: Summary: Eeek... Review: While we wait for the mystery of this book to reveal itself, the characters crash and burn. March and Hollis are two-dimensional with no redeeming qualities. The only thing that could be worse is that now there is a movie based on the book.
Rating: Summary: Save your time! Review: This story is a major rehash of Wuthering Heights. There are no new ideas, and March, the lead female character, is weak and unbelievably lame. This book is further evidence that classic stories, like Wuthering Heights, should be left alone and not re-written, or you run into the danger of having a book like Here on Earth that offers nothing new. Why read Here on Earth when you can read Wuthering Heights, which is the same story, but is much more memorable and thus a far better read? Oprah, what were you thinking?
Rating: Summary: Read the Original "Wuthering Heights" Review: Will someone please tell me...was this meant to be a retelling of Bronte's "Wuthering Heights?" If it is, the writing isn't even close to the quality of the original. I've looked everywhere in this book for some credit to be giving to Bronte for this story, since almost every last detail is the same, but I can't find any. Did Alice Hoffman have a mental lapse and not know she was copying someone else's story? Aren't there copywrite laws? It's past ridiculous. Don't bother...skip this one and read the original.
Rating: Summary: Un-magnificent obsession Review: This is a depressing and, ultimately, disappointing story. Hollis borders on the satanic with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. We at least understand why he has to control March; we have no idea what March sees in him. And worst of all, the story builds to a climax that never really happens. If you want to read a good Alice Hoffman book try Practical Magic or Seventh Heaven but don't waste your time on this one.
Rating: Summary: Modern Day Wuthering Heights Review: Anyone who has read Bronte's classic, Wuthering Heights, will notice the uncanny parallels between the two novels. Here on Earth, however, not only tells a modern-day version of the classic, but adds several dimensions to characters (you pity a character on one page and hate them on the next). The book adds interesting insight on affairs, the definition of love (is there one?), and even first-cousin dating. The reader can also appreciate the very real and convincing look at an abusive situatation, putting the reader in another's shoes. Many plot twists (as well as character twists) make this book hard to put down.
Rating: Summary: Read Wuthering Heights Review: If you've read Wuthering Heights, the plot will be extremely familiar. If you haven't read Wuthering Heights, read it instead of "Here on Earth."
