Rating: Summary: A Wonderful, Emotional Book! Review: A wonderful example of relationship between mothers and daughters when communication is not a priority! A wonderful story to remind us to love and never lie! Not a book for those who don't discriptive writing.
Rating: Summary: Worth the money! Review: I absolutely loved this book. As soon as I was finished, I passed it to my mother. It made me think of her. The characters are real and situations believable. Of course, I knew it would be good because it "caught my eye" in the bookstore. The Irish myths and legends also drew me to it, since I am of Celtic descent. Definitely a must buy for anyone looking for a heartwarming and rich story! I will look for the next book by Ms. Carrey.
Rating: Summary: kept me wanting to read but author's writing too cheesey. Review: this book is more like a what i would expect a harliquin romance to be like--maybe slightly a notch above. if you are a reader that enjoys that kind of book then you'll love mermaids singing. the author's development of characters is weak with exception of cliona. i couldn't figure out why grace and her daughter had such a sex problem. it really gets to the point of being ridiculous--- the word "slut" began to pop up in my mind as the book went on.don't get me wrong...i think sex adds tremendously to a book, but lines like "his lips were warm and tasted like oil and salt and fish" and "Liam trying to look apologetic while holding his hands over his groin and licking his swollen, delicious lips"....made me wonder why i was reading this book. also, the way grainne just snapped out of her eating disorder was totally unrealistic. i couldn't get a picture of such a sick and emaciated (not to mention the chopped off hair) being so sexual.
Rating: Summary: excellent page turner Review: i read this book in about three days because it was such a page turner! it is a deep family saga and it is written beautifully. i couldnt put it down! it is full of secrets and suprises. it is an absolutely wonderful story!
Rating: Summary: Compelling reading Review: This book is certainly a page-turner. It was difficult to put it down. I enjoyed reading the stories of each of the three women. Like other reviewers--I found the character of Grace to be incredibly frustrating and selfish. It was just not clear to me why she made the choices she did--whatever the inadequacies her mother(Cliona) may have had. I'm not happy with the ending, either. It may have been a 'happy' one, but is it the best for Grainne? If she becomes involved with Liam, I can only see this as a poor choice for her. I just have visions of the cycle being repeated once again...All in all--it was enjoyable reading, but it seemed a little pretentious and overdone to me.
Rating: Summary: A compelling novel I couldn't put down Review: This story about the bond and breaking of 3 generations of Irish and Irish-American women astounded me. Lisa Carey is a wonderful novelist. I cannot believe that "The Mermaids Singing" is only her first book. I hope she writes more novels based loosely on Irish folklore.
Rating: Summary: Very wonderful. Very emotional. I LOVED this book. Review: The Mermaids Singing brought memories and feelings out in me that I thought were locked up forever. It seemed so real. I enjoyed reading it more than I had imagined. It really made me think of my own ups and downs. Excellent!!!
Rating: Summary: "The Secret of Roan Innish" for grown-ups" Review: I loved this book....my practically perfect spouse brought it home to me and I devoured it in one sitting. Once I started this fabulous story of three head-strong women, I simply could not put it down. If you read the book or saw the movie, "The Secret of Roan Innish," you'll understand the pull that Ireland has on its own. I recommend this book....and I'll be reading it again, I am certain.
Rating: Summary: Why do reviewers like this book so much? Review: I had just finished reading Angela's Ashes (which the bookjacket compares this book to), when I came across this book. I can't say enough of the power of Angela's Ashes. In comparison, this book does not fare well. I probably would have liked it more if that comparison had not been made. I also would have liked it more, I think, if the characters hadn't all been so sex-starved. It seemed that more than anything else, this book was about women who could not control their sexual urges. I was left with a lot of questions about the other facets of these women's lives, but I guess they did not have any. It all seems very shallow to me. I look for more of a mental challenge than that. The only part I found rang particularly true was the way in which Grainne fell apart upon her mother's death, but even there, there were significant flaws. I don't think most anorexics suddenly sit up and start chowing down fish and chips! This book was a disappointment to me after a run of very good books.
Rating: Summary: Incredibly emotional Review: Who knew when I started reading this amazing novel that I would read the entire thing through a haze of tears. Carey does and incredible job of pulling the reader through the thoughts and actions of the three generations of Irish women.
