Rating: Summary: a good book about Mothers and Ireland Review: I've read good books and bad books about Ireland. This was nicely in between, I knew it but didn't care. Carey used the myths of the island combined with just enough real life to make you believe that this is a realistic veiw of Ireland, without the hardships like in Angela's Ashes or too many fairies. I loved the combination of stories and real women. When I finished reading it I started again and read it five times. Her use of language and the way the narration is set up makes the book great. I can't wait for Lisa Carey to improve with time but for now I'll rely on my favorite book with all its flaws.
Rating: Summary: This is truly an amazing book! Review: A friend recommended this book to me, and I was VERY glad she did! I am normally not very interested in "generational" type novels- but the complex story line, combined with the beautifully written portrayals of each of the women pulled me right into this tale. It was a definite "don't turn out the light until you are finished book", and after reading I felt as if I had been there to see, feel and taste the tragedies and joys of each of the characters. This is one of those novels that remains with you after you put it down, and leaves you feeling full and satiated. What a treat, and what a surprise! I highly recommend this book, and it has changed my narrow views about this type of novel.
Rating: Summary: And this is only her first book? Review: This is one of my favorites. I really enjoy books which include generations. The book skips narrative from from daughter, mother, grandmother. I expecially like reading each generations' take on the same events. For instance, when you read the grandmother's take on pregnancy, you learn she had the same opinion as her daughter, but both were too afraid or stubborn to discuss it. The book makes you evaluate your relationship with your mother!
Rating: Summary: A book for all grandmother, mothers and daughters alike! Review: Certainly one of the best books I've read. I was just browsing through the bookstore when the paperback cover caught my attention. I must admit I'm easily persuaded into buying books when I like the cover of the book itself. Starting from day one till I finished the book, I wasn't a bit sorry I bought it! I am anxiously waiting for Lisa Carey's next novel!
Rating: Summary: Masterfully written Review: This is probably one of the best books I have ever read. It was so imaginative, and lyrical. I envied these womens' determination and courage. I fell in love with Grainne and wanted so badly to reach out to her and let her know everything would be okay. I will recommend this book to my own mother and grandmother and maybe it will teach them the importance of forgiveness.
Rating: Summary: This book is truly intoxicating. A Magical work of art. Review: The Mermaids Singing, is an incredible book. It is full of emotion, myth, and soul. I ran across this book, and quite frankly, bought it because I liked the title. I have a short attention span, so it is hard for me to sit and read for long periods of time...I sat and read this book in 2 days. I couldn't put it down. Then when I was done, I wanted to start it again. This book is excellent. I encourage all to read it, and then pass it along to someone you love.
Rating: Summary: Stirring Review: For those of us who struggle with mother daughter relationships, I thought this offered incredible insight to understanding the choices that we make. I couldn't believe this was the author's first work. It is very well written, captivating as fiction and shows amazing maturity regarding thhe hopes and desires of women.
Rating: Summary: Excellent! Review: I loved this novel for many reasons. For one, I liked the style in which it was written, going from Grace, to Grainne, to Cliona and back again. I thought many of the emotions Grainne felt, and the reactions she had were very real. Altough they were awkward, they seemed to fit. Superb. I look forward to more from Lisa Carey
Rating: Summary: Excellent portrayal of mother-daughter relationships! Review: Very realistic portrayal of mother-daughter relationships and how unspoken thoughts and feelings are so often misinterpreted by those around us, and the extreme importance of voicing those thoughts and emotions. It's a very well written, descriptive book which totally involves the reader from beginning to end, even to hearing the mermaids singing! I look forward to Ms Carey's next book.
