Rating: Summary: One of the best books I've ever read! Review: Any gal who has gotten married recently (or even not so recently!) or is getting married soon MUST read this book!! It is the perfect chronicle of planning a wedding! I agree with the reviewer who intends to give this book as a shower gift (put it in the wishing well!!) - it is the perfect gift for the bride to be. Now I don't feel so bad about the crazy bride to be (the anti-bride, as referred to in this book!) that I became when I was planning my own wedding a few years back!
Rating: Summary: The Perfect Shower Gift! Review: As long as this book is in print, I will be purchasing it, along with a placesetting of china, for all of the brides-to-be in my life. If you have ever been a bride or have gone through the whole wedding thing with a friend, this book is for you. The writing is witty, the characters believable and the situations that arise could happen to any bride. A definite keeper.
Rating: Summary: Do yourself a favor and try "Otherwise Engaged".... Review: this book is fluffy and OK, but it seems to mimic an earlier (and in my opinion, much better) novel that Knopf published in 1999..."Otherwise Engaged," by Suzanne Finnamore. while Mad Bride goes for the broad laughs, Otherwise delves much deeper and is way funnier. The critics agree, apparently....
Rating: Summary: Outlandish Matrimonial Fun Review: This book is perfect for anyone who has had the pleasure of planning a wedding, watching a wedding, has a girlfriend, a boyfriend, is made up of DNA. Because of some Kevin Bacon-esque dimension, everyone will somehow relate to this book, it is universally relatable. The book has quirky suprises, farcical characters, and is extremely easy to follow. It is a one sitting read. And the protagonist is so very likable and her tone is pitch perfect, she is the quintisential New York Bride on a budget: somewhat irreverant, sarcastic, lovably bitter, and a nervous wreck. The only thing she is 100% sure of is that her future husband is the man for her. Which reinforces the idea that the actual marriage is infinitely more important than the wedding itself. What good is the perfect calla lilly if he hates your mother?
Rating: Summary: Required Reading! Review: Hilarious and great stress relief! Every bride should read this. Friends of brides, too. It's a great read and I couldn't put it down once I started.
Rating: Summary: The most addicting book I've ever read! Review: I honestly can't say enough good things about this book. It has it all! This book is stuffed with brilliant hilarious writing. As a person who would rather do almost anything than read a book, for me to finish this book in 2 days was astounding! I honestly couldn't put it down!
Rating: Summary: Derivative, shallow, dull Review: If you just adore sentimental relationship/wedding stories (that pretend to be biting satire but are really just mildly snarky puff pieces), this book might be a fun time-waster for a few hours (you can skim most of it since it's plenty repetitive). On the other hand, if you are alienated by the Wedding Industrial Complex that insists that your invitations must match your reception tablecloths, OR by the notion that weddings are the pinnacle of women's lives, skip it. While the protagonist is supposedly ever-so-modern (whoa, she has a job! she briefly considers not changing her name! she has sex with her boyfriend BEFORE marriage!), the tale is the usual trite oh-the-wedding-planning-was-so-stressful-but-it-was-all-WORTH-it goo. Sorry, but I'm tired of the "desperate but kooky single women" genre.
Rating: Summary: LOVED IT!! Review: This book was one of the funniest that I have read in a long time. It takes you through the "fun" of planning a wedding on a budget. It was great to take a break from planning to laugh and sympathize with Amy--the main character. We all know that it's fiction, so take it with a grain of salt and enjoy the antics of the characters... I definately recommend this book!!
Rating: Summary: Laughed out loud through the majority of the book Review: I laughed so hard while reading this book. I recently became engaged and my fiancee bought this book for me when I was eyeing it. Too hysterical for words. I rarely laugh out loud while reading, but I laughed for five minutes straight after one particularly funny line.
Rating: Summary: Not recommended for brides-to-be Review: I gave it 2 stars because it has some interesting points. Unfortunately later on it gets boring & irritating. Not to mention it's also a depressing novel for brides-to-be. I recommend Shopaholic Ties the Knot by Sophie Kinsella instead of this book.
