Rating: Summary: Simply the best read in a long, long time. Review: I read this book during a very down period of my life and it resurrected my spirit and hopes for the future. I can not recommend it highly enough
Rating: Summary: One of the Great Ones Review: This book is up there in the top three for me. I laughed out loud and sobbed out loud. I despise baseball, but that didn't change its effect on me. I re-read it every year. This story belongs in a time capsule for future generations, and should be given as a gift to anyone who claims that American literature is dead
Rating: Summary: Absolutely the Best Book Ever Review: David James Duncan is the greatest storyteller of
our time. He weaves together life events with the
inner workings of the mind and heart so well that
you don't know how absorbed you really are until
you've finished and realize you MISS these people. The arguments, the tragedies, the triumphs and the day to day trudge to work make you love these people as your own family. My brother-in-law is Irwin. My friend Josh is Peter. Am I Kincaid? Was my Aunt June Mama? This is truly the most absorbing story of a family I have ever read. It is a must-read in my book. Oh yea, and there's baseball in there too, for all you fans out there.
Rating: Summary: Highly Recommend Review: I don't know what made me pick this book up, but after reading the first chapter I had a hard time putting it down. The words paint a very descriptive picture of life. The "Photo" of Papa Chance watching the sun rise is so vivid, your eyes will water. Of the hundreds of books that I have read this is one of my top 5 favorites, one that I have re-read at least 3 time
Rating: Summary: A beautiful place to spend your time. Review: David Duncan is a master storyteller who vividly challenges the reader to better understand the emotions and experiences that shape opposing points-of-view. He contrasts the simple, all American sport of baseball with Vietnam, one of the most divisive experiences of our recent history. Duncan is unique among living novelist because he wraps the most painful, personal, family-bound conflicts in colorful humor. Read this book and you will rethink your past
Rating: Summary: Terrific. Review: A friend recommended this book in a Christmas letter. The language is rich, and the story is loving, and funny, and sad and beautiful. It's the kind of book that you read more and more slowly as you reach the last chapters, because you don't want it to end
Rating: Summary: A Bildungsroman Review: Definition: a bildungsroman is a "coming of age" novel.
Much like "The River Why" this book tells the history of
a family in a poignant and sometimes hysterical way. It's about
love. It's about life. About growing up and growing old.
About war, about peace. It's about finding yourself. Duncan
is probably the best writer of modern times. I'm a journalist
and I found myself just amazed at the way he used words. How
he describes things. He paints such a vivid picture of life
that it is incredible.
Rating: Summary: Captures the vast array of emotion present in family life Review: A wonderfully written book that captures the vast array of emotion that only family life is capable of eliciting.
The author transforms the sometimes mundane day to day experiences of family living by imbuing these interactons with keen insights.
Rating: Summary: INCREDIBLE AUTHOR! SPECTACTULAR BOOK! Review: The Brothers K is filled with spectacular moments of humor, drama, and action. This book is an absolute must-read for
anyone who enjoys thinking about the meaning of their existence in a very strange world.
Although this book is not for baseball lovers only, it has many great baseball moments. Especially check out the scene where Papa Chance tries to explain the true nature of the
strike zone to his young son!! A ***** scene!! This book is filled with them!! And don't forget to check-out Duncan's
other all-star novel, The River Why
Rating: Summary: Family Review: This book will make you laugh out loud. It will force you to
cry. Stories of families are everywhere; this one is different.
It is the story of every family, it is the story of no family
in particular. The Brother's K is a moving, touching, funny
book. It contains family life down to the last minute detail,
allowing fights to be mean and vindictive, reunions to be tawdry yet touching. The true story of the American family is contained within the pages of this book. In addition, a wonderful story line and creative, alive characters give this
book true life. Reality, in all of its glory and sadness, will be the lasting impression The Brother's K will give you.
