Rating: Summary: Most Talented American Writer Review: I have never read a book that ripped emotional respoce the way this one did. I have never read a book in which the use of the english language could so capture mood a given story, the feelings of multiple charactors and a never ending cumpultion to keep reaidng no matter what time you have to get up for work. David James Duncan is why we still print books, why we read them, amd why we feel.
Rating: Summary: My all-time favorite book!! Review: I'm a former Engilsh teacher, so I've had occasion to read plenty of books from many eras, and I have to say that this is my favorite of all time. The reader may never experience vivid description, complex, well-drawn characters, or a compelling plot to match The Brothers K. David James Duncan will soon be coming to Grand Rapids, my home town, and I am extremely excited to meet him. My first question will be, "When is your next book coming out?" I hope the answer is, "I have a copy of my latest book right here!" Do yourself a favor and begin reading this book immediately!
Rating: Summary: A must-read title for anyone who grew up in the 1960s Review: This book is a sympathetic, yet objective portrayal of the coming-of-age of four brothers in the 1960s: a G.I. who volunteered for Vietnam, a yippie activist, a convert to Hinduism and their awkward, introverted youngest brother. I especially recommend it for anyone who grew up in that turbulent era.
Rating: Summary: For once, the cover blurb was true... Review: I was at a consignment shop, browsing through the used books. The cover blurb on the paperback's spine shouted: "The must-read book of the year!". I thought - yeah, sure. But I figured I could chance eighty cents, how bad could it be? Well. I have seldom been so drawn in or enthralled. Duncan is a master - rich characters, amazing descriptive powers, multiple plot lines that could each stand on their own but are woven into a substantial and satisfying tapestry. What's it about? It's about a lot of things. It's about 700 pages long. It's about your family, and mine. The cover blurb was right. You must read this book.
Rating: Summary: Recent death, new child, my marriage, my love of the GAME Review: My minister cousin gave me The Brothers K, without explanation or review. He knew I loved baseball, always have. But more importantly, he must have known that the recent death of my grandfather, the summer arrival of our first child, my life and my private struggles were mirrored in Duncan's book. I've spent each evening of the past three glorious weeks living in the Chance household in Camas, Washington, circa 1968. And in spite of the sorrow, and surely because of the intimacy I felt for Duncan's characters, I was damn hard pressed to return. I have never read a more poignant, humor-filled, emotional book. In my estimation, The Brothers K will be an enduring classic.
Rating: Summary: Is it a family tale or the tale of a family? Review: This is just another story from the 60's of an American family. RIGHT, and Poe , Steinbeck and Hemingway were merely writers. Duncan captures the essence of the problems faced by many people then and now. Problems with home life, government, religion and more. This is by far the best book that I have ever read (the first second and third time). I can not think of another book that I would recommend more highly than the Brothers K. Good work Mr. Duncan and please keep it up.
Rating: Summary: One of the best (and most American) novels of the century. Review: Somehow, David James Duncan captures the American
family in his epic. The story is driven by the characters varying interests and talents, especially baseball and buddhism, but also the 60's politics and then Russian Literature. The characters are well-developed and by the end I was dying to find out more. I'm hoping Mr. Duncan decides topublish another book soon. I'd also recommend River Teeth and The River Why to anyone and everyone. David James Duncan has established himself as one of America's best contemporary writers.
Rating: Summary: A treasured place to have spent time Review: The book has everything ... fine writing, humor, insight into human behavior, characters you miss when you are finished. Wonderful
Rating: Summary: THIS IS NOT A COPYCAT BUT A FRESH PERSPECTIVE AT WRITING Review: EVERY ONCE IN AWHILE YOU FIND A BOOK THAT RATES AS A CLASSIC. MR. DUNCAN HAS CAPTURED MY IMAGINATION WITH HIS FRESH APPROACH TO WRITING A STORY. HIS DESCRIPTIONS OF EVERYDAY FAMILY TRIALS AND JOYS MAKES ME REALIZE THAT IN EVERY SITUATION WE CAN EITHER MAKE THE BEST OR THE WORST OF THEM. HIS IMAGINATION AND ABILITY TO TELL A STORY THOUROGHLY ENGROSSED ME. THIS BOOK IS A DEFINITE MUST READ FOR ANYONE WHO ENJOYS A GOOD BOOK, ASPIRES TO BE A WRITER OR JUST WANTS TO BE A BETTER CONVERSATIONALIST
Rating: Summary: GREAT BOOK! Review: This author is, simply put, the most entertaining, enjoyable author out there today. In the past decade I have only read one book I loved more than The Brothers K and that is the first novel by Duncan, "The River Why."
