Rating: Summary: Worth reading, rereading, rerereading and rererereading! Review: Amy Tan's incredible talent shines in this, my favorite and most special reading. The characters stay with you long after the story is finished. They are still with me. I was upset when I finished the book because I didn't want it to end. I have even highlighted parts of the book that touch me the most. There is much insight to be gained from this story. I am in awe of Tan's ability to create living, breathing characters that I swear I have known all my life. It is truly a wonderful book that I recommend to anyone who thinks deep and feels passionately. ...And anyone else for that matter.
Rating: Summary: Thoroughly Enjoyable! Review: I read The Joy Luck Club before reading this. They were both great! I felt like I could relate to the stories. None of them have the same story line, which is a change from most other books. Amy Tan is truly one of the most magnificent Chinese-American authors!
Rating: Summary: Amy Tan is a tremendous weaver of tales. Review: This book was given to me as a Christmas gift, and I was afeared to read it. I thought that, since Ms. Tan's "Joy Luck Club" (which I haven't read) was a best seller (I have no faith in the reading tastes of the American public), and since I had heard that her stories deal with relationships between women, this book would be some lovely-dovey, weepy pile of goo. Much to my delight, the book is simply a well-told tale, and an excellent one at that. I highly recommend this book to anyone, male or female, who likes good stories. That's what this book contains, good stories, and, as I said, well told. Attitude adjustments can be very rewarding.
Rating: Summary: emotionally enriching, thought provoking; very entertaining Review: One of the best books I've read this year. I would love to know a spirit like Kwan. She has to be Amy Tam's most lovable and appealing character : optimistic and innocent. Her simplicity of form and purity of heart feels genuinely authentic. The Hundred Secret Senses is a splendid story about hope, love and loyalty.
Rating: Summary: Not just a fantastic book: LIFE CHANGING! Review: This story was not only fascinating and compelling, but it also altered my perspective on life much the way the best spiritual books I've read have done. It is AMAZING.
Rating: Summary: It's all the same! Review: How many times can Amy Tan write the same story? I've read Joy Luck Club, The Kitchen God's Wife, and the beginning and end of this one. The themes are all the same: female Chinese Americans coming to terms with their identities through a female relative. It made for ONE interesting, well-written story, but it stretched pretty thin over three novels. Also, isn't anyone else concerned that all the characters grew up in San Francisco, but never encountered black or Latino people? Shouldn't it happen in at least one of the books? Never mind, make that one book.
Rating: Summary: Beautiful Review: Amy Tan is a masterful storyteller...one of the few books that made me cry. It is better than The Joy Luck Club. Kwan and Olivia's story are interwoven..like a quilt. It is about sisters, one with spiritual eyes, one with logical thinking, and ultimately finding truth without logic. It is great.
Rating: Summary: Touching, compelling, a masterpiece! Review: Amy Tan never fails to amaze me. Her books take you into her world. Her intricately woven storyline is marvelous, and constructs a tale of ancient times, past lives, and loyalty towards your soul. I recommend that everyone on EARTH with half a brain read this book.
Rating: Summary: A modern Chinese American girl & her foreign half-sister Review: The Hundred Secret Senses is an enjoyable book to read. This story may relate to thousands of people because most people have relatives from a different country who come to visit them in the U.S. The children usually think their relatives are strange because of their accents, clothes, personalities, and actions. In this book, the reader will hear many interesting stories and secrets about the past of Oliver's half sister, Kwan and her ability to see ghosts. This book reminds me of my favorite cartoon series called Dexter's Laboratory on Cartoon Network. Just like Dee Dee always bothers the heck out of her little brother, Dexter, Kwan always woke Olivia up in the middle of the night, yapping her mouth. When Kwan follows Libby everywhere she goes, Dee Dee trespasses in Dexter's lab because no one is allowed in there. Also, just like Dexter, Libby wishes to get rid of her half sister. The Hundred Secret Senses is like a more realistic, more mature version of Dexter's Lab. Both have a different level of humor. The only main difference is that The Hundred Secret Senses is more compelling. So if you watch and are a fan of Dexter's Lab, you should read The Hundred Secret Senses by Amy Tan and compare the differences.
Rating: Summary: The Hundred Sencret Senses is Tan's best by far Review: This book is definately one I will never forget. As complex as Tan's books are, none has gripped me as much as this. I found it hard to put the book down to finish my homework or eat or even sleep. This book made me re-examine myself and it is one of the few books that made me cry. I love the way Tan describes the scenery and the comlpex story which all makes sense when it's done. It's like a 100,000 piece puzzle that seems overwhelming as you do it, but when you're done, you're amazed at what you see.
