Rating: Summary: Great light reading! Review: This is not a major piece of literature. Nor, is it the best of M Binchy's books. Nevertheless, she has developed her characters well and you will soon find yourself wrapped up in their story.
Rating: Summary: Highly Recommended! Review: The beginning of this book is a little confusing because of all the charactors, but it is well worth the wait. I loved this book.
Rating: Summary: Tara Road Review: I enjoyed the book very much. I had a hard time putting it down. There were many characters in the story and I loved everyone of them. I felt like I knew everyone like my own friends and neighbors. I'm interested in reading another of Maeve's books.
Rating: Summary: Tara Road Review Review: This was a great book. I couldn't put it down and I keep thinking about all of the characters. I feel as though I know the people in the book personally. Classic Binchy
Rating: Summary: My Millenium Book - by lucky chance Review: On my way back from a wonderful family Christmas in Washinton DC I bought a couple of books at Dulles Airport to fill in the long flight to Denmark - and the following jetlag days.Tara Road is my first, but definately not last Maeve Binchy book. Through two days and nights I laughed, cried and enjoyed these Irish - American everyday characters. Tara Road could quite well be a small road in Denmark, as well - and the Irish characters are quite similar to Danish everyday people. I hope to find a new MB book soon.
Rating: Summary: Tara Road Review: I read this as soon as it came out and liked it quite a lot. The book as interesting characters and an okay plot. I enjoyed reading it and I liked how it ended. It was a really good book but Binchy has written better.
Rating: Summary: Totally Wonderful! Review: I would have bought this book sooner, but I'm trying to read other books by Maeve Binchy also. I read it in 2 days, it was so wonderful. There were of course some unbelievable parts to the plot, like Ria not catching on to Danny, but all in all a great book.
Rating: Summary: A book which demeans women Review: I am a male in my late 40's and have come to rely on Oprah's suggestions since my experience with the books she recommends reveals those books to be well written with compelling stories. But this book was not only dull, it truly lends support to all the horrible stereotypes of women as gossipy, back-stabbing people who have little loyalty toward friends when it comes to "getting a man". Every character in the book except the "heroine" Ria was two-faced to family and close friends--and the principal "plot" of the book was to look aghast with horror upon Ria's adulterous husband. Frankly, the women characters came across worse than Ria's husband--and Ria's character was developed to show an extreme inadequacy in assessing the strengths and weaknesses of her husband and closest friend. I was very diappointed and could never consider spending any more of my money on books written by this author.
Rating: Summary: DON'T COMPARE MAEVE TO DANIELLE STEELE! Review: I am giving TARA ROAD three stars because it is not my favorite Maeve Binchy novel - I don't think the secondary characters were developed as well as in some of her other books. Yes, the story has elements of a soap opera, but please don't compare it to anything written by Danielle Steele. I have never been able to get through one chapter of any of her books that have come my way. Okay, I did read MESSAGE FROM NAM, she must have had a ghost-writer. Excuse me, I digress. TARA ROAD is an enjoyable read. The main character, Ria, changes throughout the book, and I really liked her. She seemed very real to me, like a good friend. My only complaint about this book is at times it was a bit slow, and not 100% believable, but so what, it's a novel. The story itself is actually very inspiring, about friendship as well as self-reliance. I definitley recommend TARA ROAD to all Maeve Binchy fans, and for those who've never experienced Maeve, if you like good stories with characters who become like friends, please give her books a try. However, for first time readers of Maeve, you might want to start with ECHOES or EVENING CLASS, which are two of her best!
Rating: Summary: Pure enjoyment... Review: I'm giving this four instead of five stars because it's absolutely a blast of a juicy, gossipy "women's" book, which most of us women love; as for the actual writing - it's not Toni Morrison, okay? Indeed, as one reviewer below has written, it's a little disconcerting when Americans don't speak like Americans. We don't use expressions like "the lot of them" and "I'm off to the store," etc. - things like that. You have to wonder - don't these famous writers get edited?Still - this is a much more fun potboiler/soap opera than (ick) Danielle Steele, as another reviewer recommended. Danielle Steele's adjectives are, typically: "fabulous" - "fantastic" - "incredible" - "marvelous." As they say, never underestimate the reading taste of the American public! As far as I'm concerned, Pilcher is right up (or down) there with Danielle Steele. But Maeve Binchy was recommended to me years ago by a highly erudite librarian who read everything from Shakespeare to Joyce. Thus, when Tara Road came my way in the form of an unabridged audio tape read by Jenny Sterlin, I figured I'd take a chance, and man - couldn't get enough of it. It's easy listening, but as smooth as Irish coffee laced with Hagendaas ice cream.
