Summary: A beautiful book.
Review: I love this book! I've read it dozens of times. At first glance, it's fetching and readable, but look beyond the surface - some passages are near masterpieces. Look for Macon fixing the sink with Alexander, and Macon shopping for clothes with Alexander. This book also gives a believable and touching description of a person changing. Just follow Macon's thoughts and see how they change with time. I think this is Tyler's best (and I've read them all).

Review: This book is very entertaining. Better than the movie...William Hurt was about right, Geena Davis wasn't. The heroine defies decription.

Summary: This book may have saved my life.
Review: It opened my eyes to interpersonal mess-ups in a new way and helped me understand the crucial difference between romance and love. It's also one of the few books I've ever read from cover to cover, without even skipping sentences. (Usually I skip whole chapters if nothing seems to be happening.) The funny thing is, it's not exactly action-packed, it just gives you a good look "under the hood" of this world. To me, the rave reviews are deserved and I want to add my own five stars. To the author: thank you for surviving whatever you had to go through to understand human nature so well!

Summary: Some strange birds, but you got to love them!
Review: Anne Tyler loves her characters, especially the weird ones. I won't forget Macon Leary very quickly!After 'Dinner At The Homesick Restaurant', this is the second book of her I have read, and most definitely won't be the last. I couldn't tell which I liked more.

Summary: You will NEVER regret meeting Macon Leary
Review: The book is one of the finest you can find around. It is also a fairly easy reading- which is surely believed to be a better writing. The book is a world, filled with Anne Tyler's careful concerns about matters. She is not harsh nor cynical, for the characters can still laugh and enjoy and also, change. Yes. The book is still warm. While many authors try to bring cold eyed reasons and coolness between the sentences, she can write about comfortness. Once in a while, THAT is the stuff one needs. Although, the story is rather too obvious and movie-alike, once you fall into the author's fluid words, you don't care about them anymore. It is just... just so good. You will be happy with them. You will be smiling, and feeling nice and easy. You don't even have to try. By the end of the book, you may find what once was valuable to you, too. So, Meet Macon Leary. And have some fun. :-))

Summary: By far Tyler's best
Review: About three weeks ago, I recommended this book to my friend. My friend loved it--couldn't put it down and recommended it to almost everyone she knew. Clearly, that is the power of a great book, and that is the "Accidental Tourist". At first, the book is about Macon's tangible problems, his leg, his lost love life, his travels. And then the book probes into family, love, loss, dreams, ambitions, and how we stumble "accidentally" through these, becoming a tourist within our own lives. How brilliantly Tyler conjures up these incredibly quirky characters and how they come alive through her writing. Very easy to read on the surface level, but deep if you're the type of reader who probes into novels. A must read for any lover of great American literature.

Review: A bittersweet book--slightly less melancholy than the movie. Tyler's books usually reflect this kind of "laughter through tears" tone. Macon and Muriel are at once hilarious and pathetic, which only makes them more endearing. One of my all time favorites

Summary: Warm up to it by Accident or Design
Review: This is not an action-packed novel and it does not get off to a galloping start. But trust me, it does get better. About a third of the way through the book, you discover you really are interested in the characters and what is happening in their lives. You begin to develop hope and optimism for the relationships they pursue. That's when the story runs away with you. By the time you finish the novel, you feel inspired by the various kinds of love and ties that bind each relationship. Keep it on the shelf when you're through with it--you may want to read it again.

Summary: This book will make you laugh and weep!
Review: This is one of my favorite books, Macon is a travel writer who would rather stay home. His books cater to people who must travel, hence the tips about how to bring home with you on your trip. He is staid, compulsive, and depressed. His son is killed, and his wife leaves him. This book describes his depression. Macon stops cooking and cleaning. He devises a way to make popcorn from his bed, he sews his sheets together to make it easier to make his bed. Finally He meets Muriel and she is his opposite. She is impulsive, messy and fun. Macon is repulsed and then entranced. Macon and Muriel learn from each other. Muriel trains the dog "Edward" even when she is flat on her back and he tries to bite her, she holds her hand up and says "absolutely not!" Edward obeys her. This is my favorite book because it makes me laugh and cry. The characters are a wonderful blend. Read this book!
