Rating: Summary: Hand me another doll Review: Ah...how can someone NOT like this book? It's just so ..well..60's. Chocked full of all that we secretley love peeking into, the life of movie stars, drug dependency, sex and struggling to make it in a mean world and a mean business. Our three main characters Neely,Jennifer and Ann are all self destructive drama queens in their own distinctive way. It offers a panorama view of how shallow life can be if you put your priorities in the wrong things and the grief chasing after these can bring. It really is classic commentary .
Rating: Summary: A cult classic Review: Trash reading at its finest, you say? True, but this is the book that set the standard for all of the other trashy books that followed. Be it Harlequin Romance or Jackie Collins, Jacqueline Susann has written a book that applies back then as much as it can be applied to today. All you need to do is replace the pills with heroine, cocaine and ecstasy. When it was published, I can understand why it was considered revolutionary and groundbreaking. Certainly nothing as frank was written prior to this book. Now we look at it with disdain, but can we really disparage the truth of sex and drugs in the entertainment industry? I could not put this book down. I can see why it is a cult-classic. As real as it may have been back then, it is probably too true today. Each of the characters bring on their own demise, and you learn to laugh with them, cry with them and despise them for their weaknesses. All very human. This book is a first. Imitated but not replaced.
Rating: Summary: Very addictive! Review: I've been wanting to read this book for a while. It certainly has a reputation! It wasn't great literature, but it was a great read! I read the whole thing in less than two days. Anne, Neely, and Jennifer are all beautiful girls desperately trying to make it in New York City. The book follows them for twenty-five or so years as they marry, divorce, become famous, become blacklisted, and finally sink into the valley of the dolls. What are dolls you ask? Dolls are pills that come in every shape and color. They help you lose weight, help you sleep, help you stay awake, and help you destroy yourself. This book presented drugs and sex in a way that no book ever had before. Things are generally the same today. Celebrities will often do anything to keep their status. However, this book was revolutionary for its time. Jacqueline Susann keeps the reader's attention and this book is definitely worth reading!
Rating: Summary: Dolls, Dolls, Dolls Review: Valley Of The Dolls obviously this was one of Susanne early books. It is absolutely amazing that nearly 30 years after it was first published that it is still a popular subject to read. Therefore, it is very fearful that our nation has grown in its abuse of the use of illegal drugs. If we do not curve this illegal drug use or prescription nerve stimuli medication, it will be the undermining of our nation. Naturally I did not like the theme of this book, but, this book did bring to light the story that some of us Americans live out each day. I would recommend the read of this book for an educational enlightment but not for information on how to abuse drugs. Somehow I believe that young readers might choose this book for the latter.
Rating: Summary: One of the best books I have read Review: This was a fabulous book and probably one of the best books I have read in a long time. I truly enjoyed the drugged-up, crazy, wacky, sexy totally screwed up girls and their relationships. The 3 girls quest to make it to the top of showbiz gives us a close look at what its like in hollywood in the 50's. Highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: FAVORITE BOOK EVER!! Review: I read this book over the weekend and quickly became hooked. For those who enjoy trashy romance novels, I strongly suggest all of Susann's books.
Rating: Summary: Not my style Review: Well well, this book is very easy to read and you can finish it in three or four days, but is not a good book. Is the story of three friends that work in broadway at first and then in Hollywood, the story of Anne is the better one, is not boring and will keep you reading, but here I have a question, how much time could wait a young woman for his man when he disappeared and the she knew that he returned and he didn't wanted o see her? I think that is a big mistake of the book. The story of Jennifer is a sad one and is interesting to read but not as Anne story. The story of Neely is the worst, when she is at the hospital is boring, but what she made to her best friend Anne, well let me tell you I prefer enemies that a friend like Neely. I can't tell that the book is worthless or a waist of time, but is not a good book. if you have another book to read will be better
Rating: Summary: Couldn't put it down Review: Valley of the Dolls is one of those rare novels that I wish could go on and on. Well over 400 pages...and I read 75% in one day because I just didn't want to stop reading. Jacqueline Susann writes in a manner that allows you to feel the characters - their joys, triumps, and tragedies. You just know this was a book written from experience. Not once when I was reading did it occur to me that anyone of these scenes could not have happened. Of course they could! They probably did! You must read this book!
Rating: Summary: One of the best novels ever to be published Review: This is perhaps the best "trash read" ever written, and made it possible for other authors to cash in on their writing. This story takes place within a time frame of 20 years, in which we follow three women and their journey to fame. First we have Anne Welles, who originally just wants to be a secretary, but eventually becomes a famous spokesmodel for a cosmetics company. Then we have Neely O'Hara, who has a spectacular singing voice along with great acting ability. And then there's Jennifer North, who is better known for her beauty and sex appeal than her talent. The life of a famous actress requires many stressful hours of work, and it burns many of them out. They turn to presciption pills (the "dolls" in the title), to keep their weights down as well as pills to help them sleep, and find themselves unable to live without the help of their pills. Though this is simply a "trash read", it is actually one that shows the downfall of a drug addict, and showed the down side of drugs, which wasn't done much in those days. This is one of the best novels ever written, and will always be remembered as a classic.
Rating: Summary: This book was fantastic!!! Review: I read Valley of the Dolls in 3 days. When I was on the last chapter, I started to read more slowly because I didn't want it to end. It is one of the best books I've ever read, followed now by it's successor Shadow of the Dolls. The characters of Anne, Neely and Jennifer are so real and as the reader, I found myself relating to each one at different times. It's one of those books you want to read again after your finished because the author, Jacqueline Susann, has let you befriend the characters through her writing. I loved this book and I highly recommend it.
