Rating: Summary: A rewarding effort! Review: I read this book the third time throughout four years and the more I read the more I like it. Because of the continuous moving back and forward with the time and because of the supernatural happenings,it is not an "easy book". But its remarkable characters:Sethe,Beloved,Paul D Baby Suggs,Stamp Paid and Mister (a cock!),they all are unforgettable. Taking full advantage from Morrison's superb baton, the book perfectly joins historical events with imagination, hate with love, courage with passion, crude realism with lyrism. Stylish and ever-appealing this book will be a very treasured possession in your collection.
Rating: Summary: This book is haunting! Review: Toni Morrison is amazing. I have read several of her books, Beloved is by far the best. Not to say that the others weren't exceptional. Morrison is so amazing, the detail with which she describes aspects of slavery and of Sethe's life, astound me. You definately have to be patient and read this book carefully--maybe twice. I am looking forward to seeing the movie, though the actors chosen to play the characters in the book confused me a little. I think Oprah and Danny Glover are amazing, but I did not see them in these roles. Morrison is an amazing writer and I look forward to reading all of her books.
Rating: Summary: Dead Cold Review: Beautiful language, but the story and characters left me cold. I ended up reading it purely to see how Morrison's words would unfold. I think I would have been moved if it had been a book of poems.
Rating: Summary: Well, here goes... Review: Morrisson's narrative brings forth a question central to the human experience: "How can people allow themselves to be taken as slaves or treated so abominably?" Some may ask themselves why "African Americans" didn't fight back in a country that freely shouts "give me liberty or give me death!"Sethe's "sin" was uttering the cry FOR her daughter. The catch-22 of "Beloved" is that slavery as an institution inherently prevents its victims from crying out, and the reader knows that Sethe's daughter never would have had a chance. Sethe is punished for her misdirected love nonetheless. The farther along into history a "familial" lineage advances within the bondage of slavery, the quieter the potential for a loud shout becomes until it is finally extinguished. Successive generations of slaves continue to pay for the inability of their ancestors to end their torment. This is the horror not only of slavery, but of American correctional institutions, and Mao-Tse Tung's famines as well. There is something about human beings that makes them cling to life even if their lives become unbearable. The crime of slavery is that it takes advantage of this "flaw." Toni Morrison explores the black experience with such a phenomenon in a language most amenable to those with the predilecton to comprehend it.
Rating: Summary: Beloved: Yeah right Review: Ok, you all must be thinking I'm this all-over negative type of person. Well, this book, was VERY low on my reading list. After reading the first 40 pages, I was so lost, it wasn't even funny. Too many characters were introduced in the first few pages. I think the author could have written the story in a little bit of a lower "key" so-to-speak. And, as most people do, I judged not only the rest of the book, but the author herself, on the basis of her first 40 pages. First impressions last, as the saying goes. So, as my teachers would know, I express a deep dislike for the authors style of writing. But, don't let my negativity--if you may call it that--stop you from reading this book. For you, it might all tie together in a tight knot, but for me, there were too many strands to tie off, and most ended off astray.
Rating: Summary: Spiritually chilling! Review: If you have not checked out the movie, GO! This book was exciting to me to see a nice combination of history and supernatural. I was stunned and informed all at the same time. Toni Morrison is in the ranks of Ntozake Shange. I have not read any other author, who has kept my attention as well as amaze me with some good ol' truth. I think for too long writer's have focused on a conventional tales that are beginning to bore. Morrison is definately not boring in any area. If this is your first time reading Morrison get ready to be glued to the book and take time to read more of her books. This book will definitely be etched in your brain when you finish. It will also put your brain into motion.
Rating: Summary: Beloved - Beautifully written, but prepare to be challenged Review: Beloved is amazing. Halfway through, however, I would not have said this. Morrison's work is quite confusing and challenging in places, but rewards those who persevere with a true understanding of her theme and the emotional makeup of her characters. Light reading? No. Worth the effort? Absolutely.
Rating: Summary: toni morrison's bestyet! Review: toni morrison tears up the pages with shear lyrical beauty and her characters are very human! It took my just 24 hrs to finish the book and can't wait for the movie!
Rating: Summary: Excellent-----A work of art Review: I just finished reading Beloved. It was wonderful. I was a little hesitant due to all the hype about the difficulty of reading Ms. Morrison's writing. Phooey. This book was not only a great story but excellent histoical literature. The story made me laugh, cry, shudder and think. What a work of art.
Rating: Summary: A book that all Americans should read and discuss. Review: One thing that is undeniable about this book is the amount of thought put into the story. It is extremely complex in and of itself. Her writing style, which is profound and beautiful, only makes the harrowing, disturbing plot all the more original and mythical.
